Re: LeBron Planning on Switching Numbers

6 is is OLY number, makes sense. It's funny, in 2K the last two years whenever I put LBJ on the Knicks I'd always change him to #6.

I'm glad he's doing it, he should be his own player and identity, no need to jack #23. When he first came into the league I had two thoughts on him 1) Please don't be a bust 2) Please wear ANY number but 23.

Without MJ many of the guys coming behind him would never have played because they wouldn't have been able to make the money and gain the attention that MJ brought to basketball and sports in general.

MJ's marketing and charisma are unmatched throughout the history of sports. He's been retired for 8 years and kids still talk about him and recognize him even though they have never watched him play. I'm not just referring to American kids, I'm referring to around the globe. He's a GLOBAL Icon. That's the level he should be respected at. It's almost an embarassment when I see people like Tony Douglas rocking #23.
I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. I'm a fan of individual teams retiring jerseys because it's a fun way to remember the great ones (hanging their name and number from the rafters) but I don't think it should ever be universal throughout the league (or world). On the contrary, I find that people wearing the #23 in honor of Michael Jordan are displaying a high form of honor, flattery, and thanks. Besides, I feel 23 is synonymous with basketball, to eliminate it from use would be taking away from the game itself.

I say the world should continue honoring Jordan if they so choose by wearing his number (unless you play for the Bulls. . .or Heat).

        FINALLY

23 belongs only to one player

Bryant should go back to his no. 8

I'm ok with retiring numbers universally, especially players who have had an impact on everyone during and after their career. Jackie Robinson helped integrate professional sports in the states and caught hell 4 it. He deserves it imo. Another player Curt Flood "the father of free agency" should also get his jersey retired(if it's not already) as he is the main person responsible for players in all of sports being able to make the kind of jack that they are. He pretty much torpedoed his own career in trying to have the right to play where ever he wanted and offer his services to the highest bidder. MJ is synonomous with the arrogance and egomania that now accompanies many superstar athletes today. He also set the groundwork for athletes hoping to make his kind of dough, to never speak on anything of substance and having no opinion whatsoever on anything pertinent in order to protect the bottom line. To be honest his image should probably be the logo as he is probably more representative of today's NBA athlete.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

So when MJ was playing for 2 and 3 million he had the arrogance and the entitlement that players have today?

You're kidding me man, as if what he had was handed to him. I dont care what you say about his personality but MJ had to work for his, nobody gave him jack. He came into the NBA on a bottom dweller team won 2 gold medals, an NCAA championship and worked his way up.

This is nothing like todays NBA where guys get 100 million before they even set foot on the floor. Ray Charles can see that

I hate to contradict you but you're off base here. Hockey was a solid #3 from the '50s to about the early '80s in the US. We also shouldn't forget 1994. That was the year when the NHL was surging in popularity to the point that SI proclaimed hockey to be the 2nd most popular sport in the country behind the NFL. The NHL actually had a very similar profile to the NBA at that point and the league looked like it was finally going to gain a foothold with a national TV deal with FOX and the marketing of some great older players and some younger guys.

To put it another way the NHL was like a car almost at the top of the mountain and was about to ride the wave of popularity but the car backfired and slid all the way down thanks to the NHL lockout of '94. If that lockout hadn't happened the NHL would be in a much better position today.

We should also note that business wise the NHL is slightly better off then the NBA right now. definitely not in terms of overall popularity but from a financial footing.

                ANYWAYS....

I think with Lebron's announcement last night we're going to see Jordan's number universally retired pretty soon.

Riley said it was out of respect and admiration for Michael. He was the one that pushed for the number to be retired there.

Maybe it was just a way of saying "damn you Michael I give you props for killing me when I was in NY!"

If that's the case, then it should be retired across the league. LOL

Retiring numbers is established as a nice honor, but when did it become disrespectful to wear the jersey number of a great player? I'm not well versed on this topic, but I thought I've read that many (if not all) NFL teams have "honored" numbers, where players may have their names posted alongside their jersey number in their home stadium or arena, but others may still use them. I understand that rule is set primarily out of necessity, as the NFL has such a large number of players on each team that retiring a handful of jerseys may send some guys into triple digits, but I still like the idea.

It's clearly a matter of opinion, but it appears it could go both ways here. To retire a jersey number from use is an honor, but also to have someone wearing a specific number to pay respect to a particular player is also an honor. With the way the NBA is set up now, the current process works. Each team seems to have a range of 3-12 jerseys retired (with the exceptions being the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats) thus leaving around 90 numbers available (or around 40-45 in the common 00-55 slots). Therefore, if 23 in this case is retired by your ballclub, tough. But if not, I think players should feel free to wear it for whatever reason they so choose.
