I definitely don't buy the whole "I'm doing this out of respect" reasoning. But that's just me.
But he thinks EVERYONE in the NBA should give up he number officially because it's disrespectful to Michael. I'm sick of these numbers being retired. Just freaking retire the number/name combination and let any scrub play that number. Lebron sure would love that New York media with remarks like this one.

Wow, what ever happened to being able to wear the number of someone you looked up to as a kid?

I'm not big in favor of retiring a number league wide. Yes, MJ was awesome, but he didn't have to fight through what Jackie Robinson did...

I don't get how you're killing MJ's memory by wearing his number in his honor...As a kid I'd always want a number of a player I liked, haven't you guys?

I swore I saw someone in this thread say that his jersey number should be retired universally on all levels...Wow, just wow. Do you want to be the one to tell an 8 year old that he can't wear 23 on his first basketball team because it was MJ's number? Damn, why is everyone sucking the fun out of sports?

Why not get even crazier and retire it across all sports? Hell, Tiger Woods is so huge, we should change the name of the tiger animal to something else because they're hurting Tiger Woods' memory.

P.S. - On a side note for the homers in the thread, Bill Russell has a few more rings than Michael. Russell before any other sport athlete. I think he is number one in most championships in a sport in North America if I'm not mistaken. That was one bad mother....... or rather father.......

On the contrary, I find that people wearing the #23 in honor of Michael Jordan are displaying a high form of honor, flattery, and thanks. Besides, I feel 23 is synonymous with basketball, to eliminate it from use would be taking away from the game itself.

I say the world should continue honoring Jordan if they so choose by wearing his number (unless you play for the Bulls. . .or Heat).
This. No player is bigger than the game. Even MJ knows that. Teams retiring numbers, ok. Retiring a number throughout the league? Crazy.

Because it's SO damn cliche with basketball and #23. For the last two decades it's like everyone who's decent (on any damn level, even rec leagues lol) choses to wear 23.

First thing I thought of when I heard this was LeBron wants to sell more jerseys and make more $$$. He can certainly play some bball, but I really don't care for him.

Re: LeBron Planning on Switching Numbers

For those saying that Mike is the clear number 1, I suggest you poll people and find out for yourself.

Is MJ the greatest of his time? No doubt. Will a great majority of the people choose him as the clear #1? You bet.

But I guarantee that you won't get 100% of the people to agree and I guarantee that a lot of those people aren't Knicks, Pacers, Sonics, Jazz or Pistons fans either.

Without 100%, you don't get clear #1. Like I said before, ask kids 10 years from now and watch the number for Jordan dwindle. 20 years? Even further down. Eras are withheld by the collective living. As we pass, another generation will come to love someone else. Just ask Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. Ask Bart Starr or Joe Montana. Go ahead and ask Jerry West or Julius Erving.

MJ is number one right now and man, I don't disagree with it. I saw the man play. He was amazing. But I never saw Jerry West play, so how can I ever compare? I haven't seen that kid that'll be drafted in 2020. So what do I know but the time I lived and saw?

Also, LeBron was how old when Jordan dominated? The guy is a Yankees fan (a faker fan is harder to find). I can't take his allegiance seriously. He's clearly a wagon rider for the best.

Anyway, my point is: Jordan isn't clearly the best of all-time. It's an opinion. You never honor one player as the game. The game is the game. No player alone defines it.

Before people wore #23, alot of people wanted to wear 32, 33, 13, and ironically 6.

Hell, you even get alot of #3's for people who look at Iverson's as an idol. This isn't uncommon, especially for the best player ever.

I'm all for him switching his number, I just hope he knows how much he's contradicting himself by taking Russell's number to honor Jordan. I really don't like the idea of a number being retired around the league. Let Chicago retire it, and let Miami do whatever they want while they dream of having a number worth retiring, but don't take an entire number away. I do think that individual players should take a LONG look in the mirror before they decide they want to wear #23..

I think more interesting than the actual number change is how he has to go about changing it. I learned this on ESPN today:

                              - If he stays with the Cavs, he has to file a change of number request by March 5th.

                              - If he were to sign with some other team, he can change it to whatever he wants any time before next season starts.

Interesting to see how he plays this. Suddenly March 5th becomes a fairly important day in the LeBron Free Agency Odyssey of 2010.

Though he probably didn't know about that when he stated his intentions. Lol.
