That is right on the money. Keep in mind though that the point guard is usually the hardest player to defend on the basketball court. They usually are the quickest and have the best handle in the world. Also, the defending point usually has his back to his defensive mates and is on an island by the 3 point line.
A big no-no for a defending point is to swipe or rip his oppisite number's dribble. It is a very low percentage move since their handles are so good.
What you want to do is turn the opposing point guard. Basically, make the man turn his back to his offense and the basket. Dennis Johnson was the master at this.

I was thinking today (because of the draft) about a more specific question.

There is a huge surplus of great point guards in the league right now.

You've got the guys that have been in the league for a while:
              Jason Kidd
              Steve Nash
              Chauncey Billups
              Tony Parker
              Mo Williams
              Andre Miller
              Raymond Felton
              Deron Williams
              Chris Paul
              Baron Davis
              Jameer Nelson
              Monta Ellis
              Mike Bibby
              Chris Duhon

and you've got an enormous amount of talented young guys that broke in recently:
              Tyreke Evans,
              Brandon Jennings
              Stephen Curry
              Rajon Rondo
              Russell Westbrook
              Ty Lawson
              Derrick Rose
              Darren Collison
              Goran Dragic
              George Hill
              Toney Douglas

and that's not even mentioning the guys that will be drafted this year (and in the next couple of years):
              John Wall
              Avery Bradley
              Brandon Knight
              Sherron Collins
              Ricky Rubio
              Scottie Reynolds
              Malcolm Delaney
Devan Downey (had to throw him in here since I'm from SC)
(I'm sure I'm leaving others off)

So who do you guys think will be the best point guard in the league in the next 5 or 10 years?

Personally, I think Deron Williams will hold that distinction for the next 5 or 6 years, but I think in the years after that, we will be seeing just how great a point guard and player Stephen Curry is going to be. He reminds me of Rajon Rondo with a far superior shot (really the only comparison I could draw, aside from the Nash comparison everyone makes)

and I wouldn't sleep on Ty Lawson, because this past year when Billups was out, Lawson started 5 or 6 games and averaged around 23 points and 7 assists per game. So, I think if he stays in that Denver system, he could really flourish.

EDIT: The guy that just responded made me remember another one - Aaron Brooks

EDIT 2: Throw Jrue Holiday and Devin Harris on here, too. I knew I was leaving people off. Sorry.

Well, we're almost 2 years into this question. Curious to see who's opinions have changed or which guards have popped up and jumped into the race

My Top 5 at this point

              1. Paul
              2. Rose
              3. Deron
              4. Rondo
              5. Westbrook

and since the title asks about 5 to 10 years into the future, I'll make a top 5 list for that span, as well

              1. Rose
              2. Westbrook
              3. Curry
              4. Wall
              5. Lawson

Guess we can remove Sherron Collins, Chris Duhon, Goran Dragic, Malcolm Delaney, & Scottie Reynolds from the list, and add Jeremy Lin, Jeff Teague, Jimmer Fredette, Kyrie Irving, Mario Chalmers, & Norris Cole to the list. Not to mention guys like Austin Rivers & Kendall Marshall coming out of college.

Rivers would play 2 in the NBA. He's O.J. Mayo with tighter handles.

Re: Who Will Be The Best POINT GUARD In The Next 5-10 Years?

Kyrie will be better than Curry, Wall, and Lawson.

                  Top 5 right now:

                  1. CP3
                  2. Rose
                  3. D-Will
                  4. Nash
                  5. Westbrook

                  In 5 years:

                  1. Rose
                  2. CP3 but trending down.
                  3. Westbrook
                  4. Kyrie
                  5. D-Will

Ten years is almost impossible to predict, IMO.

Rubio is already a damn good pg. I see him being yo there in the top 3 discussion of pgs in a year or two.

                        Yeah... John Wall... huh...

Not saying he won't be up there but the entire hoops world has forgotten about him.

Depends on what hoop world you're referring to.

Casual guys who watch espn or true hoop fans.

True hoop fans didnt forget, atleast not the guys I know.

17 5 and 8 are some pretty good numbers. Never been a good shooter and his 42% shows that.

I remember when Rip fell off the radar of espn when he played for the wizards too tho.

True hoops guys didn't forget but when I see discussions (media related) on young top PGs it's John Wall who? Especially now with the Lin mania.

Kid wasn't a good shooter until he got older so who knows. Out of all the young pgs in the game right now I want Rubio running my team.

Deron Williams is the best an will still be the best in 5yrs imo.
