Never heard of taps but we played with tips where if you tipped a miss shot in, basically grabbing the board and making a basket without touching the ground first then that person would go back to zero

I've only heard of this on knockout, but you have to get your own miss and put it back before another person makes it to stay in the game.

Re: The worst pick up players.

Yeah I’ve only heard it called tips. Typically if you’re shot was tipped back in off a miss you would go back to zero unless you were already safe at 13. Anything above that and you would just reset back to 13 just like you would if you were to bust over 21.

I’ve played 21 about 10 different ways, and I think it always varies based on where you are and who you are playing against. I don’t think I’ve ever played a version that didn’t have some form of tips in it. I’ve only ever heard of the “one handed” thing being applied after a game that had too many tips in it. We also used to play where if you had your shot tip-dunked back in you were out back when I was in college.

The format OJ described was typical of the region I grew up in as well (tips to zero, safe point 13), with multiple variants depending upon the gym or court you find yourself on.

There's also been plenty of occasions where games of 21 were played with no tips. Sometimes, depending on the make up of the group, tips become way too frequent and everyone just ends up spinning their wheels for a while.

Yeah in almost in scenario I've played 21 in if the game was played without tips it would be specified as "no tips" before the game started. So I always assumed tips were just the norm.

I think our rule was that you had to have at least five dudes to play Taps, otherwise it'd get stupid and people would be bounced to zero way too often. Our safety net was 11 though, not 13.

I think I stopped playing tips once past the teen/pre-teen years. It was more challenging then but once you're grown, games with tips can take forever

Yeah, we played it a lot as kids and still play it a few times a year when we can't get enough for at least 3 on 3 (usually most of the guys I play with now don't want to play unless we get enough for 4 on 4 though). We called in 21where I grew up in Alabama but my buddies I play with in Louisiana call it "Hustle". We also use 13 as the safe point threshold.

It's really all about Free Throws. If you can make you FT's you can get to 13, then 21 pretty quickly. However, if you miss them and have a softer shooting tough like jfsolo said, then games can last a long time.

Even as an adult I still like playing. It can still be pretty good cardio if you're playing with guys who are playing hard... and if they are it can get pretty intense at times.

My age must be showing for something so ubiquitous that I’ve never heard of.

I don't think I've even played 21 in 7-8 years. But we pretty much had to play tips as we aged because when you are older you aren't really missing free throws. If there is no way to offset that and get you back to zero the games fly by rather quickly. Especially since more often than not you aren't busting your *** to play defense in 21.

Re: The worst pick up players.

I'm too old now to score against two or three players, but I loved 21 when I was younger because it was, given the nature of the game, the only time I never felt guilty about not trying to play as efficiently as possible. Deep fade away jumpers, left handed jumpers, instantaneous pulls after clearing the shot.

When I was in high school we went to the Museum of Contemporary Art and there was a basketball court surrounded by a fence as one of the exhibitions. We started a game of 21 and one of my favorite things to do was to make two FTs and then on the third one if people weren't paying attention throw the ball off of the backboard and try to get a tip dunk.

I tried it there, but someone tipped the ball away after it hit the backboard while I was in the air so I just hung on the rim for a little while. 4 security guards starting screaming at me at said that I would have to leave if I did it again. I got clowned because I was the kid who never got in any trouble.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

We also played with the rule that if you were tipped with 0 points you had to get off the court. That added the "airball" rule where you could stand behind the baseline and catch an airball to get back on....

I mean, in 21 you usually have some decent run up space because ain't no one really tries that hard to boxout. That and it's much easier to go up there and get it than it is to dunk off one or 2 feet because you don't have to worry about takeoff space (usually).

Depending on how springy the floor was in the gym and whether I had my hops that day it wasn't much of anything to go up there and grab the rim with 2 hands (Is 5'8). After not having played or exercised seriously in 3 years I went to the local park the other day and I can barely grab the net. I feel so old
