I wonder if that is an East Coast thing only. I've played at a hundred places here in So Cal and have never experienced a rules set that waved off a bucket on a foul or And 1 call while someone is in the act of shooting. I wouldn't play at a court like that, I would just bounce. It's totally absurd.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.
Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever. -

Re: The worst pick up players.
In Lousiana, the rule is, if you call "AND 1" and it goes in the basket counts (and you get ball, depending on if you're playing half-court). If you miss, you don't get the ball and play continues on normally. It's more of a bragging right type of thing. Like "Yeah my man fouled, and I STILL made it".
However, if you call "Foul, Check up, Ball, or any other variant" you just get ball and the basket is waved off. It's just the unwritten rule.
As you can see, no one really calls fouls unless they know for sure they ain't making the basket.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
I mostly experience games in Michigan where And-1's do count but rarely, I've experienced games in Michigan where they didn't.
Thankfully, for the most part, logic does tend to win out. Even if rules aren't specifically outlined prior, usually if a person makes a shot while calling foul, the defense tends to respect the play in a fashion of, "Welp, we fouled him but he still knocked it down. Good for him. He gets his reward. Let's head the other way."
Again, I have to think the "no And-1" rule had to have been implemented at first to protect against some foul-calling extremist who was just calling fouls for every single movement exerted by the defense. As such, a counter-action would have been forcing a guy like that to pick and choose his battles, since he'd end up hurting himself in the long run by disallowing points he was scoring. However, if 99% of participants are willing to play even somewhat honestly, the "no And-1" rule has no place and makes no sense. I'm not even sure it makes sense in the hypothetical I painted.Last edited by VDusen04; 04-09-2012, 08:11 AM.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
Yea yelling and-1 is more wishful thinking than an actual call on the court, if you want a call you'll have to say it
And on the larger topic of calling ball on the last possession of games, where it is clear that your man is going to foul you on any drive to the basket and you are going to call foul everytime he touches you going to the basket.
Why not just shoot a jumper? Or pass to someone on your team who can actually shoot a jumper if that isnt your strength. I hate the 10 minute foulfest, check, my ball, my ball, check, my ball man damn quit fouling *drives to the basket again* *is fouled again*
rinse and repeat till some random scrub throws up a miraculous shot and the game is finally overEricmaynor3.com

Often, jumpers are a significantly lower percentage shot, particularly in an outdoor setting. So for an offense to resign themselves to settling for jumpers because the other team won't stop fouling could be a poor (albeit common) strategy. It's a form of surrender. Often, resorting to jumpers can get just as ugly around my way as the end-of-game foul fest. After an entire game of getting to the rim and working for good shots, everyone seems to get jumpy to end it, looking to fire the first available look, resulting in a game-point that takes a number of missed jumpers to finish, before the aforementioned random guy hits the miracle shot.
One way or another, when presented with a situation where a defense shows they are willing to foul indefinitely, the offense is going to have to get their hands dirty. And I think that's where the And-1 comes in handy, for if a team has decided they're going to try to wrap me up or take me out every time I shoot, I'm going to call that foul, and if I'm able to beat their system and finish despite being taken out, it's game-time via And-1.
I've lost a fair share of close pick-up games in my time thanks to opponents who were able to close the deal while being fouled (and calling it). It sucks to know your team tried all they could to stop someone and yet they still made the shot, but I respect it.Last edited by VDusen04; 05-02-2013, 03:43 PM.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
I think it's a power struggle and that's where streetball can sometimes get a little funny. On gamepoint, I think that's when the defense would have a mindset of, "Better shoot a jumpshot because you're getting fouled in here" while the offense's mindset is, "Why would I let you dictate what kind of shot I take through fouling?"

Well Im biased because my goal would have been to get a one dribble pull up anyway cause thats what I do regardless, so a painless way to end the game.
But as far as the and-1 the courts here if you call ball it nullifies any basket anyway which makes it that cat or mouse game of am I going to get this shot in through the contact or do i keep calling foul again and again. And through that process some of them do go in and get nullified, and its like that one you finally dont call, you miss the other team goes down the court and ends it. You see them on the sideline saying, "i should have called that, you know you fouled me man" lolEricmaynor3.com

Re: The worst pick up players.
I couldnt deal with that man. If you get the advantage on me and get a good shot all I have to do is foul you and even if you make the shot the only penalty is a restarted possesion? I really dont even have to play D when you get down to it. Just bide my time and whenever I get out of position just foul, check ball.Comment

It feels nothing like basketball at that point, but those are the options you're dealt withEricmaynor3.com
