Re: The worst pick up players.

I finally had my hip surgery, some six months after the initial diagnosis. I'm having a complication where blood flow past my knee is limited; my foot gets very red and veins bulge when the foot isn't elevated. Some numbness and tingling. None of this is normal. The doctor's best guess is due to some knee damage (that knee has popped and clicked for years). They confirmed that there's "slow blood flow behind the knee." At least it's not blood clots (confirmed by an ultrasound). Regardless, it's not fun but thankfully the docs aren't worried and will continue to monitor it.

It really is never easy when it comes to surgery. Hopefully, my foot/calf/knee will get back to normal soon and it'll be a smooth recovery from there. Just felt like venting.

            Vent away.

That's a rough go and I'm sorry things haven't been smooth. I was kind of wondering how things had turned out on that front so I appreciate the update.

Re: The worst pick up players.

So, COVID ended my streak of competitive basketball at around 28 years and currently I'm relatively certain I have a partially torn meniscus, so I'm still not back in it.

That said, from afar, I think I've picked up on a new worst pick-up player category: the Tik-Tok hoopers. No matter what part of social media I pop into, I can't get away from clips of guys taping themselves at random pick-up courts aiming for quick views. I just can't help but imagine the sorts of terrible copy cats those guys would have induced around my way.

It's just way too easy for me to picture having a nice night of hooping only for a couple of out-of-town goofballs to show up with someone holding a camera looking to go viral at my expense.

Speaking of these types.. I occasionally see videos of some dude "MK" and his only move is basically shouldering guys out of his way and then yelling back some "get in the weight room" type of ****. I get it, but he's a bit excessive with it as it's his only move. You can't really draw charges in pick up ball, and bodying up/grabbing/whatever to prevent that would surely be called a defensive foul.. So I find all his clips to be incredibly annoying. Props to some of these dudes for not socking his jaw after though. Better men than me lol.

Ah yes, the Shaq quandary. Even in the NBA dudes usually had to pick between just getting steamrolled or being called a flopper.

Twelve years ago I remember playing against a guy like that, built like a 6-foot-5 Tyler Hansbrough. Lowered his shoulder into me at the free throw line on the first play of the game, knocked me over, shot a clumsy fader that bounced off every single piece of the double rim before trickling through. To this day I still remember what he said running back down the floor.

                      "This is my world."

                      Dude was a total goof.

This is nearly every ex-football player I've played pickup with. I also love how ex-football players "box out" aka shove and push and throw anyone and everyone out of the way. There is nothing you can do about it in pickup ball.

There was this one dude called Wild Todd who sometimes came to the park and he used to do that nonsense after offensive boards. Grab a board, look around, and shove any nearby defender square in the chest, then lay it in. Dude was like 6'3" 250 lb of solid muscle and had a solid rap sheet. No one said anything to this dude lol. Even the guys who normally ran their mouths stayed quiet. He was Deebo for real.

To follow up on this, it was good run.

I don’t know their posting schedule, but I want to see if they post our game, especially since we won, lol

Didn’t embarrass myself fortunately and even had a few highlights. One of the guys “HeziGod” I think has a nasty first step. He actually finished a crazy layup over me…can’t even be mad.

Re: The worst pick up players.

I probably mentioned this earlier in this thread years ago but it just sprang to mind again today.

Has anyone else ever played in an open gym/pick-up environment where not only was the shooting foul onus on the defensive player, but foul calls also cancelled out made buckets?

I know that's a confusing question so I'll paint a picture. James drives to the rim and elevates for a layup. Steve comes over from helpside and demolishes him midshot. James makes the shot anyway, but Steve—the defensive player—follows the house rules and calls a foul on himself, wiping the shot off the board.

I played at a spot like that for a few years and I thought it was insane then and I still do now. Why in the world would that bucket not count? I brought that up at one point and folks responded like I'd used the lord's name in vain during Sunday mass.
