Ya’ll are some bougie pickup ballers, lol

Or maybe it’s just a regional thing because 1s and 2s has always been a normal thing in a “first to 21” setup everywhere I’ve hopped at(NY, DMV, Atlanta). Just like if your team won, you got to stay on until you lose…which is how it should be and I assume it is in any setting.

No BS, I would hate this rule.

If my team is on a roll(won 3+ in a row)we shouldn’t have to get off just because there are others waiting. I can’t imagine any gym enforcing that one and dudes are too competitive to want to just voluntarily sit out to give others a turn just because they’ve been waiting, lol.

People just roll with and accept whatever their region decides, I've found out over the years. I think I've dabbled in just about every sort of streetball rule setting mentioned in this thread and while some rules seem foreign to me (and some straight up illogical), it's interesting how locals can almost never imagine hooping any other way.

I grew up with 1's and 2's to 11 (last game to 15, win by 2). Winners stay indefinitely. Call a foul if it meets the street threshold for a foul. If you make the bucket, count it. No need to use specific nomenclature. "Foul", "And-1", "Hold up", "Got one", "Now wait just a doggone minute" all suffice.

It's not a system without its flaws yet to me, it all feels like common sense, just because it's what I grew up with.

I have never once played at a spot that has "win two and sit". Dudes would riot. The games are way too competitive for that lol. It does get really annoying when five former DI guys roll in together and hold the court all day though.

Dudes who don't play by "east coast rules" (as we'll call it for simplicity's sake), how do you not run into the guys who call EVERYTHING? Every time they take a shot in the paint they call a foul so if they miss the shot, they get the ball up top.

If it’s an open gym where runs are over when everyone leaves, I moreso lean toward winner staying up

If there’s a time limit, like 2 hours to play, I prefer 2 and sit.

20 heads are too many regardless, That’s why I prefer private runs

Honestly have not run into that much at all. I'd imagine that, no matter what the rules are, there will always be that guy that thinks everything is a foul... always walking straight to the top to check up after calling the foul and trying real hard to avoid eye contact with everyone. Lol

So I think that there may be some players calling more fouls sure. But that's generally what you'd find anywhere

You absolutely run into guys who call a lot of ticky tack fouls from time to time, but it's never been worth taking away and-1's from everyone or disallowing everyone from calling their own fouls. Taking away and-1's would be the pick-up basketball version of a teacher keeping everyone inside for recess because one kid in particular wouldn't stop talking during class.

Oddly enough, having played in regions that didn't allow and-1's, I still ran into the ticky tack foul guys at just about the same clip. It's just, in those areas calling fouls became way more confusing. It's like, you want me to call my legitimate fouls promptly right as they happen, but if I do that and still somehow make the shot, I'm punished for it.

The easiest and most sensible format I've come across is players calling their own fouls and not being jerks. But if you're playing with a bunch of jerks, you're bound to get jerky basketball regardless of rules. The ticky tack foul guys are the same dudes who'll claim they didn't call a foul when making an and-1 in the no-and-1 games.

True, but without the east coast rules the offensive player has nothing to lose. They can call a foul every single time just in case they don't make the shot.

With east coast rules, you're going to shoot yourself in the foot if you call ticky-tack fouls and make the shot anyway.

I've found societal norms and pressure generally keep this in check. Most people don't want to be that guy. And when you do encounter that guy, it just feels like another classic pick-up stereotype, cut from the same cloth as the "always foul hard" guy, the "old man who wraps up anyone who drives and gives a supporting pat on the back like it's all good" guy, or the "literally argue over every single foul" guy.

The zapping of and-1's just felt like overkill in my area considering how comparatively small the foul issue was in the first place. We'd rather have the chance to be rewarded for and-1's instead of punishing everyone on account of the rare bozos who try to abuse it.

You must be playing with some gentlemen lol. At most of my runs half the guys will do damn near anything to stay on the court.

Yeah, I'm grateful I've been able to find runs over the course of my life in which most people were generally tethered to reality. I can't really fathom playing at a court where every player literally tried to call a foul on every single play just to avoid losing. I'd have tapped out of pick-up basketball by age 20 if those were the only types of dudes out there hooping.

But I also think that speaks to how variable the pick-up experience can be from city to city, state to state, and neighborhood to neighborhood. I spent most of my time hooping outside of major cities, in lesser populated areas where you generally only had to sit out one game when you lost. We absolutely got competitive, but not to a point where everyone was willing to ruin the game for the sake of staying on the floor.

Yesterday I was able to shoot around for the first time since my hip surgery in late May. It felt amazing, both to get back on the court and to be on the court in some capacity with a hip that is not completely f'd up.

I still have a ways to go in my rehab; the goal is to start playing again around Thanksgiving.

Just shooting around is a great way to get that range of motion back. Keep at it.

Re: The worst pick up players.

I hooped last night for the first time in nearly three years (and 4.5 months after my hip surgery). It was an awesome feeling. I made it through seven games to 11 and was shocked at how good I felt given that I'm in my 40s, but the rehab/physical therapy was pretty intense so my body is probably in better shape than it's been in in a while. I wasn't all that sore when I woke up this morning which was an even bigger surprise.

Of course, I got winded quickly and I think I missed every shot I took the last two games, but it was crazy playing basketball without a seriously ****ed up hip.

The standout "worst pick up player" was the rotund 5'6" guy who tried to play point the entire time and passed the ball maybe once out of every four possessions lol. The pinnacle was a 3-on-1 where the lone defender picked him up near the top of the key and he still wouldn't pass the ball to either wide open guy filling the lane. Ah, nevertheless it is good to be back.
