Kobe was very valuable as well in the clutch in 2008. But his shooting was abysmal and though he played well in sports defensively, overall it was below par. The U.S. wouldn't have won gold without him, but you could say the same thing about perhaps even Melo, James and Wade. U.S. needed all of them that year against an elite Spain team.

I really don't care who's a better one on one scorer or whatever, Melo has proven over the years in international play to be as valuable as anyone on the U.S. That is fact.

As far as Matthews and Hill, they have no chance of being on the team because they haven't been in the program. Hill for sure doesn't belong on the floor. It doesn't matter what he might bring to the table, there are more than 5 guards who can do the same and more.

Melo is a versatile scorer but not much about his game is fundamental. He doesn't use or set screens. Doesn't make quick decisions with the ball or make team oriented passes. Unfortunately, he represents much of what is wrong with today's players.

Kobe made all the shots he had to make. Melo has been up and down in the international competitions, which is business as usual for him. Of course, Colangelo wants the big name/big numbers guys to stir up hype. Versatile young point guards like George Hill are rare.

Melo has been up and down? IDK about that, he's been as consistent as any of the others who have gotten the bulk of minutes. How was he up and down? He always provided a scoring punch and played as hard nosed as anyone on the team including centers.

Melo has proven to be able to play multiple positions as well internationally, anywhere from the 2-4.

Kobe was the one who was up and down if anyone.

Seems like you're just making excuses for Kobe, although he belongs on the team I agree.

sup guys, i just discovered that OS wasn't just about nba 2k lol so here's my first post in a non 2k forum

i was thinking about what will team usa look like in london after i saw the dominance of Spain big men (gasolS n ibaka) in the euro thinking who can stop those guys... team usa of course !

so i found that thread and here's my 15 men roster :

            starting lineup :

            CP3
            DWade
            LBJ
            KD
            D12

            subs :

            PG : Rose/ DWill
            SG: Kobe/ Joe Johnson/ Harden
            SF: Melo/ Granger
            PF : Zbo/ Love
            C : Bynum

that's it, i think there's pretty much everything in that list to get the gold medal 100% of the time.. so much talent they might not even need a coaching staff lol, actually the bench only would bring the gold everyday : / scary ...

i rly rly wanted to put Griffin in here but Love n zbo are made for Fiba's game imo

off topic : i have a question, as a european living in the US, i 'd say american people are the most patriotic people i know in general but... why do nba superstars only care about the olympics and not about fiba world championship?

I guess because there is just not that much history in it. It used to be played with College players that many people may not have known. Then they did go pro but you could tell the players didn't care. The NBA season is so long that I think the players just want to rest in the off season. the one difference now is they pool the players to play together for 3 years at a time so they are more used to playing with each other. I still don't think they totally reach their full potential even though they have won the last 2 major tournaments they have been in. Also, if there is a lockout that last the whole season, I don't think you will see NBA players at next years olympics.

                  Blake [Griffin]?

Wonder if he'll be on the initial 18 man roster

Think I read somewhere that he might be the only dude who wasn't on the '08 and '10 squads that will be on the final 18.

As it is now there are already several locks

CP3, Wade, LeBron, Durant, Melo, Howard, Love

That's already more than half the squad... that's not even including Kobe if he chooses to play, he'll have a spot.

We told you earlier today that LaMarcus Aldridge is on the verge of being added to the preliminary Team USA roster for the 2012 Olympics.
Now we’re reporting something even better: The entire 19-man roster.
Here it is, alphabetically, from my impeccable international basketball sources:

                            LaMarcus Aldridge
                            Carmelo Anthony
                            Chauncey Billups
                            Chris Bosh
                            Kobe Bryant
                            Tyson Chandler
                            Kevin Durant
                            Eric Gordon
                            Blake Griffin
                            Dwight Howard
                            Andre Iguodala
                            LeBron James

I don't really see where Eric Gordon fits, but it'll be a good experience for him. There's no reason we shouldn't get the gold again.
