The contracts are pretty well gone if they did that. They would have to negotiate new contracts.

But that's incredibly unlikely. The owners would NEVER do that.

Petition to VOTE on decertification -- presumably coming SOON from disgruntled players -- does NOT mean NBA season is automatically lost

        Semantics.

If they vote successfully to decertify, then the season is done.

Sources close to decert movement believe NBA's hard-line stance will soften during 45 days sides can keep talking before actual decert vote

Why? If I am the owner of the Magic or Wizards, why wouldn't I be sitting in a corner laughing and saying "no way in hell am I paying Rashard Lewis / Gilbert Arenas their $30 million owed" etc???

            Contract is dead? Why pay?

Plenty of ballers around the world happy to come and play for me...

Do you really think the owners want a free market society? Owners openly bidding on players, paying them as much, or little, as they want? Having to negotiate with thousands of single unions?

No. It won't happen. The NBA will never play a game without an NBPA

Big difference between finding 130 players to sign petition to VOTE on decert and finding some 230 players to vote FOR decert 45 days later

I just got on the net & went to click a link to the lockout/negotiation news on yahoo & got this:

got a little chuckle out of that...thanks yahoo for keeping it short & straight to the point!

Re: NBA Lockout and Collective Bargaining Agreement Discussion

What I would like to know is what does the average NBA player personally stand to lose if the agree to the 50/50 deal vs. being locked out for the season? I mean, we all know that the Lebron's, D Wade's, etc. can afford it because they can live off of their endorsements, but I'm sure the Delonte's and Big Baby's, etc. of the NBA can't.

The players have to realize this is money that they will never get back. The owners, well the ones who plan to be there for the long run, will eventually make their money back over the course a new/better deal, but the player's money is gone forever. If they can't see that they have ZERO leverage and this deal will only get worse for the then they are much, much dumber than I imagined.

I don't know bro. I follow basketball world wide and teams like Charlotte, Sacramento, The Bucks...really bad teams...they could add guys from around the world for a total of $10 million + two big contracts.....and do just as well.

I.e The Bucks...Bogut + Jennings + ten role players who work hard every minute of the season for $1 million each = just as good / bad as the current Bucks anyway.

Smaller teams would love it IMO. Paying Corey Maggette $5 million...who wants that? You could add 5 guys almost as good for $1 million. There's a lot of talent out there and there's a lot of guys who won't take the L and the opportunity for granted.

Put guys on $1 million a year...and you'll see guys train their asses off and bust there balls every.minute.of.every.game because they want to be renewed.

No more Tim Thomas not even freaking trying to work whilst getting $7 million.

                              I don't understand this.

                              I simply do not understand.

The players, at least according to twitter, do not take this ultimatum seriously and think that going to decert would soften the owners.

I don't know who is offering this advice, but man is it stupid. Owners have already said that they are willing to toss the season if need be, and it would provide more profits without a season. Not sure what the players think is going to happen.

I do think a decert would backfire heavily, but most nba players won't even agree to it anyway
