Allen was highly active, contesting 8 shots and playing aggressive defense on 12 posessions. Indeed, TA was almost impossible to shake with a screen, anticipated drives and poked away dribbles. When Durant tried to post Allen up, he held his ground and Durant just kicked the ball out.

Durant is at least 6'10, mobile, and handles like a guard. Tough cover.
Very nice retort, I remember being highly impressed with Tony Allen in the finals against the Lakers. He's definitely a legit defender but I think a ton of people are undervaluing the defensive impact Shawn Marion had in the playoffs.

I'm willing to give Dallas fans the benefit of the doubt on the claim that he played a similar defensive role all season long. Not only is Shawn Marion primarily responsible for Lebron earning such nicknames as "Lebrick" and the "Frozen one" but he also has people all over screaming that Kobe looks like he belongs in a retirement home.

That's pretty impressive if you ask me.

      AlexBrady,

Can you share your thoughts on the Marion vs. Tony Allen debate. Is Marion in contention for the #1 slot?

Personally, I dont know who the best is. There are a lot of factors involved in gauging perimeter defense. All I know is that if I was up by one point with 15 seconds left and needed someone to check Lebron James, Kevin Durant, or Carmelo Anthony, there's not a player I would choose to guard them over Marion

Are either of you making a case for him being the #1 perimeter defender in the NBA right now? That's the question I asked you before ZB. If you are, that's fine and I just disagree. But your posts seem to be focused on him "being in the conversation" but not bc you think he should be #1, just that you think somebody should think that? Arguing your point isn't a knock on what he did in the playoffs or the season. It's a knock on him being #1 overall, which you haven't even said you think he should be.

Everyone wants to say whos #1. While it's possible to determine who the elite defenders are, I dont know if it's possible to determine who the #1 perimeter defender is. There are too many factors involved and depends on preference. Personally, my #1 is the player who checked the opponents' best scorer all season long and proceeded to lock down Lebron James on the way to winning the championship.

Ill take the player who locked down Lebron James in the Finals over the player who let Kevin Durant score 39 in game 7 to let the Thunder win the semis, but that's probably just me.
So are you really suggesting that I either have an agenda or didn't pay attention to the championship?

No, Marion isn't that guy anymore. But five years ago, absolutely. He shut down guards, wings, and even bigs. His astounding quickness, long arms, and high shoulders made him an elite defender and one of the finest players in the game.

In the Mavericks Title run, Marion's off ball hustle was crucial to his team's success. His positional defense was top notch and he did an excellent job of forcing his check to Dallas' well coordinated help spots.

Explain the high shoulders part. I have never heard that terminology before. How does that help? Because it places his arms at a higher starting location than a regular shouldered man?

Andre Iguodala is getting shafted HARD in this topic.

That's only through February last year.

Also his Synergy numbers are at the bottom of this article:

People aren't freezing out Iguodala, we are just talking about more talented players than Iguodala.

Now maybe if we want to talk about the most overrated perimeter defender, or player in general, then we can certainly bring in Iguodala.

Because I believe it is overrated. It's solid, no doubt, but it's not shut down defense, IMO.

And who calls him a shutdown defender? I don't even know if anyone is really called that to be honest. This isn't the NFL. Everyone gets cooked from time to time. So based on him being called shutdown, he is overrated. Cool, I will agree with that. And I would agree to it if anyone is called shotdown.

The post above ours has a picture saying that he's basically shut down.

He's not. Nor is he the best perimeter defender in the NBA. People who consider him the best defender in the NBA are wrong.

Nah, I just think that picture is pointing out his best defensive games. Nothing more.

I think we are saying the same thing with nobody being shutdown at all. Even the best get cooked.

Yeah a guy finishing 3rd in points per possession allowed last year and was great on defense last year is the most overrated defender. He was arguably the BEST defensive SF in the league last year.
