I still don't know how the Mavs are ever going to hold any team under 100 pts. Sure they could put up well over a hundred, but there are other teams that have off. power as well as def. power. Take Min. or Sac. as an example. T'Wolves have a good number of scorers, not as great as Mavs, but T'wolves also have better D. KG is a monstor on Defense, and Spree isn't that bad either. Sac. as we all know is an offensive powerhouse, but they play great team Defense as well.

Awesome Offense + No Defense= Mavs
Great Offense + Good Defense = Kings
What would you take...

Then there is LA who have a great blend of Offense and Defense. Kobe and Shaq is great as it is, but now we don't have an offensive liability at PF, and more Depth at guard. Not only are the Lakers good on offense, but they are a great Defensive Team

Payton - "The Golve" i think 9 All-Defensive team
Kobe - one of the top Defenders in the league
Fox - not great, but he's decent
Malone - great power for post D
Shaq - does anyone really wanna go against him

THe Mavs are in a conference full of big men, and all they did was bring in a soft, streaky scorer (like they don't have enough of those...)

just like tex said, the mavs were in the same boat last year so this will be nothing new. if anything, this move frees up their cap a little and gives them some scoring depth.
I'm sofa king, we Todd Ed.

The MAVS will be getting defense. Walker is not going to work out for me.Maybe if he used his body more and learn how to shoot.
Paul pierce might get his chance to show that he can lead a team.

i hear you. i like dallas because of their original trio(dirk, finley, nash). even with lafrentz is agood lineup and now they got anotoine walker! i hate antoine. he jacks up a lot of threes and his fg% is not good for his position. i hate his shot selection either. why oh why?!?! i can bear with jamison but not antoine.

I dont understand why people say they wont be able to hold teams under 100 points. Did anyone see this team play last year and win 60 games. They lost Nick and Raef who were not good defensive players at all. if anything they got bigger with Walker, Jamison, and Forston. No one is gonna stop Shaq or Duncan, it sure as hell wasnt lafrentz. To say they wont be able to stop anyone in the playoffs is ludacris, this team made it to the western confernce final playing with a small lineup 75% of the time.

I'm convinced the Mavs are the team everyone loves to hate. We have people on here claiming the Kings play good defense. Are you joking? Kings & Mavs play everage defense. The T Wolves D on paper has improved, but let's see how it goes. I'll give you the Lakers & Spurs...both great defensive teams. You would think Raef Lafrentz was a good player the way these people talk. LOL! I just hope you're Celtics fans & you get to see him first hand. I'm tired of people making up things to rationalize their Mav hating! Just say you don't like the Mavs. It's obvious they have made good moves since Mark Cuban showed up, & it looks to have continued. He dumps contracts with precision, they bring in talented players, & they are dedicated to winning. In case you haven't noticed every team is trying to get good players, & the Mavs have been a top 4 team for 2 years. Bad trades didn't make the Mavs what they are. Of their key players, only Finley was inherited. Of course they're not a shoe in for the title, but they are one of a handful of contenders. Raef Lafrentz was not a piece of the championship puzzle (especially at his price). I challenge people to find this player the Mavs are looking for (great post defender, rebounder, can gaurd Shaq & Duncan great). If you know who he is, now ask yourself if the team who has him will let him go. First of all, he doens't exist. Secondly, no team that feels like they have a premier post defender will let him go. I think the Mavs should put Finley & Walker on the trading block & see if a premier big man pops up, but I doubt it. Big men, in case you haven't noticed, are at a premium! They just have to hope one pops up in free agency or in the draft, & they will jump on it just like they did Zo. When you find the guy yo want the Mavs to get, let me know. I'm curious to see the people here show their basketball genius & get us the next great post player without giving up Nowitzki. Have fun with that one. Let's talk about the 23 teams with no chance at the title this year & what they need.

Unbelievable steal for Raef
10:17 PM CDT on Monday, October 20, 2003

After wondering how Antoine Walker likes a crowded forward rotation and puzzling over how the Mavericks still don't have a center and what Mark Cuban does with the $35 million he just saved himself, you come to this conclusion:

They got what for Raef LaFrentz?

All morning and into the afternoon, you waited for the punch line. But apparently it's no joke, not unless you're a Celtics fan wondering what the heck Danny Ainge is doing.

No, this wasn't the perfect deal. Donnie Nelson still hasn't found anyone that can go navel-to-navel with Shaquille O'Neal in next week's opener.

Not that it makes any difference.

"I'd say whichever guy it is," Don Nelson says, chuckling, "he's gonna get his [expletive] kicked."

Exactly. And here's the point: Only Houston and San Antonio have any one man who can stand up to Shaq, and Raef LaFrentz was not going to get you Yao Ming or Tim Duncan.

But Donnie used LaFrentz to bring the Mavericks the "point forward" they've always wanted, and that's more than you could ask.

Forget trying to mimic the Lakers or even the Spurs. All the Mavericks can do is try to be more like Sacramento, and now Donnie has moved them closer than ever.

Until now, the Mavs have been a jump-shooting team. A wonderful collection of jump shooters, no doubt, but still just that.

What makes Sacramento's offense so much better is that it goes through more than just Mike Bibby or Bobby Jackson. The Kings' best passer is Vlade Divac, who runs a Harlem Globetrotters routine from the post.

Antoine Walker won't do that, but he's averaged better than five assists per game the last three seasons, along with 20.8 points and 8.7 rebounds for his career.

No forward or center on the roster until Monday was a potential triple-double threat in those areas.

Hey, Donnie: How do you get those kind of numbers for Raef LaFrentz?

"Raef, in our opinion, is one of the top 10 centers in the league," Donnie says, so deadpan it'd make Amarillo Slim look like Jim Carrey.

Makes you wonder what could be wrong here with a three-time All-Star who's only 27.

Walker doesn't have the best reputation, sometimes throwing fits on the floor or off it.

Played with a balky right knee last season. A little heavy, maybe.

Hasn't looked so hot in the preseason, either.

"He definitely has struggled," Nellie says, "and they must have had some concerns about that."

The Mavs don't. Before he made the deal, Donnie went to Michael Finley, who works out with Walker every off-season back home in Chicago, where Walker also took on Michael Jordan's personal trainer this summer.

Result: Finley reports that Walker has slimmed down and is jumping like he did back at Kentucky.

As for Walker's reputation? "When you're losing," Finley says, "and the media and the fans and everybody else criticizes you, it brings out the negative in a player."

So how do you fix that?

"Come around positive guys," Finley says, "and you've got no choice but to be positive."

Hey, it worked for Nick Van Exel, and you'd hardly find anyone glad to see him go.

Even at that, Van Exel for Antawn Jamison was a good deal. This trade is better because Van Exel can play.

LaFrentz? Never answered the Mavericks' needs, particularly for what seven years and $69 million should bring.

Never even stretched defenses as much as they hoped. He couldn't have lured Shaq out to the perimeter with cheeseburgers in both hands.

Still, he could be an effective center in the East, which is what Alonzo Mourning was thinking when he turned down the Mavs for New Jersey.

No, the Mavs still don't have a center. Just a bunch of forwards, and it'll be interesting to see how they get along.

Don't expect too much, too soon. Even Nellie says they haven't figured out exactly what to do with all the players they got in the Golden Gate deal.

Now, just a week before the opener, life gets more complicated. Dirk Nowitzki has to play more center, Jamison comes off the bench and Finley goes back to swing man.

But it's a deeper and more versatile team, and it didn't cost them much, no matter what Donnie claims.

"This is a win-win situation for both teams," he says. "Danny and I just have a great relationship."

Not if he keeps this up, they won't.
