Why The NBA Can't Do The Chris Paul Deal

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/45606670

On Thursday night, word swirled around the Twitterverse that Chris Paul could be on his way to the Lakers in a trade with the Rockets and the Hornets.

    New Orleans Hornets
At best, the Hornets get a couple of starters and a draft pick.

At worst? An all out PR disaster for the league within minutes of ratifying its 10-year Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players.

When leagues have owned or controlled teams in the past, they have been careful to tread very lightly. While dumping players has less of an impact on the team's value than teams that aren't for sale, leagues don't want to get into a position of having the fans believe that they are trading players in order to control outcomes that are favorable to the league at large, namely large markets winning.

Out of all the four major leagues, the league the fans think have the most control over competitive balance is the NBA by a mile.

Now, let's get a little deeper.

New Orleans is a sensitive place to pick a fight. Ever since Katrina, it has been a place where no one in corporate America wants to be caught abandoning. Louisiana is the fifth poorest state in the nation.

They spend money on the Saints and the visiting teams love to make road trips to Bourbon Street. They've done less than stellar with the Hornets despite Paul's presence, though they claim to have sold 10,000 season tickets for this upcoming season.

Sure, there's the something for nothing rationale: Might as well get something for Chris Paul before he becomes a free agent next year.

The NBA saved New Orleans when it bought the team a year ago from George Shinn, but now it's their investment. The league is better off selling the team while Paul is there (assuming it is committed to the city) than to sell it when he's gone and the team is in financial straits.

Sure, you won't get anything for Chris Paul after this year, but the NBA doesn't need him past this year. Trade Paul and the books look deflated. The value drops. Use Paul until you can get a new owner committed and the league is golden.

Of course, if the league is willing to approve a move by a new owner -- where they will realize the most value -- it doesn't matter what the Hornets do with Paul. Their value will skyrocket like the Expos did when Major League Baseball sent them to Washington D.C. and drove up the prices.

Lastly, imagine you're a large market owner and David Stern just convinced you to quadruple your revenue sharing payment all in the name of competitive balance. Then he goes and ships Paul to the Lakers. Are you happy?

If I'm a Laker fan, I'm ECSTATIC the deal didn't go through.

Why? Because not only did it destroy your chances of even thinking of getting Dwight (no matter how much you want to oversell Bynum's value), it also would have left you with no front court depth, which was your main advantage on most teams in the West. Paul was not the answer to your prayers, and in fact, would have left you worse off.

And to answer your question Drew, I'm from Hawaii, my mom is from LA. I deal with more ******* Lakers fans that know NOTHING about basketball (played all my life). My team has never went all the way in my life, and if that trade were with Toronto, you're right - none of this drama would occur. That's the thing I can't stand about the Lakers as an organization. They're constantly showered with gifts and rarely have to develop their young players. Chris Paul is one of my favorites, and this trade just wouldn't have been fair for the 20+ other plus teams in the league (some which can offer much better than Gasol and Odom).
As a Rocket fan i'm kinda disappointed that the trade didn't go through.

The Idea over here is that this move would have cleared up space to give a better option for Nene. A lineup of

          Lowry
          Lee
          Morris/Chase
          Nene
          Pau

Would have at least IMO been more fun than what we are going into the season with(all depending on Nene any way) but I'm disappointed the league blocked the trade.

So what's the chances we see Dwight heading to the Lakers instead tomorrow?

            I'm thinking pretty high.

I felt that way. All week I had been saying I'd take Dwight over Paul. But with Pau as that centerpiece, the Lakers were going to get Dwight with Bynum.

This veto wasn't a deal stopping CP3 from being a Laker. This was a deal that was stopping Dwight and CP3 joining together.

Guess it's the Lakers fault for having the assets to do this (and Bynum was not one of LA's "gifted" assets. He's homegrown.)

You should maybe be a little upset that you missed out on Pau, but you should be more than glad that you're not ending up overpaying Nene out the *** and regretting it within 2 years.

I still wanna know what case does CP3 have when they JUST agreed to this CBA today?

If you and the rest of the players didn't like this, shouldn't have agreed to it then. Plain and simple.

Im curious if the players ever agreed to something like this. I've never seen any language in regards to this specific situation, not even sure it would be in the CBA.

Not that I think CP3 has a case or anything he can "legally" do.

And of course you gt love how Laker fans just assume they'll get Howard now. No Chris Paul? The premier PG? Oh that's alright, we'll just trade Bynum and Gasol for Howard. Yeah that'd be better.

Perhaps. Still though kinda irked the league stepped in. We're still on the books for Scola and I feel Nene is much better defender than Scola and his offensive production is not that bad. I think it would have been a major front court upgrade.

Andrew Bynum? Starting center? Yeah we drafted him as the youngest player in NBA draft history. Think we got two rings with him so far.

hope david stern is forced out of his position... This is the most ridiculous thing I have seen done by the league in nearly 30 years. It's not like the hornets were giving up CP3 for a bench player or something. They were getting the best end of the deal by far, versus losing CP3 to free agency and getting nothing in return. This should shed light on the kind of commissioner stern really is, nothing but a 2-faced jerk off that abuses his position and tries to intimidate players.
Now in the end the Lakers will end up with CP3 in free agency and keep Gasol. They will trade Bynum and Odom in a package that will be D12 to LA.
2012-2013 will be a starting lineup of CP3, Kobe, ???, Gasol, and Howard.
The NBA is creating more of a monster by letting LA keep all their size and premier players and give up nothing in return to get CP3 and possibly Howard.
