I still say Shane Battier is the most important acquisition for next season.

The primary work on deal has been between Lakers and Hornets sides, sources say. Rockets still get Gasol, still move same parts. Odom to NO.

at first I hated that deal its grown on me now. If we get a decent pf to play along with paul kobe bynum ( stay healthy) artest they'll be pretty good.
LA loses length and skilled bigman.
LA gains a skilled pg who can get his own shot.
Bynum will actually have a chance to open up without pau.- interesting!

              WOW!

If Cuban pulls off a trade for Howard I'll be happy as hell but shocked at the same time...

I've heard rumors all summer but i really don't get to excited about big name free-agents or players signing with dallas because it's never happend before.

But it makes me wonder now why Cuban refused to offer long term deals to all of his free-agents...

Maybe he does truly believe he has a shot at Howard or Deron Williams this year instead of next summer.

I would imagine in order to get Howard they would have to gut the team and probably do it with him not even willing to sign an extension with dallas beyond this year.

They also are expecting to get a very large Trade Exception out the Knicks with the S&T for Chandler deal something around $12 Million which could really help in a Howard deal

Re: Official POST-LOCKOUT Player Movement Thread (Trades, FAs, etc)

Since I finally caught up, I'll weigh in on the deal, since my team (The Rockets) are involved and they're trying to resurrect it.

                The Lakers

                Short Term:
It's probably a wash. While they will have one of the best backcourts in the history of basketball, they give up the advantage that makes them so feared in their size. From pure on court perspective, they probably have the same shot of winning this year, but this trade is about future moves.

                Long Term:
When looking at the obvious long-term, the Lakers are by far the big winners here. They get arguably the best PG in the league to fill their weakest position, lose no draft picks, and somehow clear enough space to land a Dwight Howard with a nice trade exemption. When looking at all of this in tandem, the Lakers clearly are the big winner, but the fans only look at the short-term and say "no big deal".

                The Hornets

                Short Term:
As far as on court talent I think they get a massive upgrade. All the incoming Rockets are professionals who come to play. While CP3 is obviously more talented than any player coming in, with Scola/Martin, you get guys who aren't primadonnas, and won't mess with your chemistry. The good news is at best this team could MAYBE sneak into the 8th seed.

                Long Term:
The bad news is at best this team could MAYBE sneak into the 8th seed. Instead of letting Paul walk, sucking for this throw away season getting a nice pick in a deep draft and having cap space to work with, they are saddled with players that aren't bad enough to help them improve or good enough to make any real noise. As a Rockets fan I know how much it sucks to be in 14th pick purgatory. Sometimes it's good to get nothing and move forward with a clean slate than to take on other teams bad contracts (while acting as their farm team). Scola is a bad contract inked for 5 years and he's already over 30. Martin is also older, injury prone and makes 12 million a year the next 2. The pick is the Knicks... and yeah... they are going to be good, so don't expect much there. If anything this deal handicaps the team, hinders flexibility and makes it a tougher sell for a potential owner IMO.

                The Rockets

Short Term: Two of our three best players (Lowry being the third), and another rotation guy is a big loss, and I honestly think we get much worse this season if we do this deal. If we get Nene (just like if LA gets D12), then that's a whole different animal, but as it stands, I don't see Paul and "what's left" being better than what we have.

Long Term: This is tricky. I like the deal long term because it gives us more flexibility. I'd rather have Gasol's bloated contract for the next three years than Scola's for the next 5 (and Martin for the next 2). However, I also disliked the deal because I feared that the capspace would be used to overpay for a second or third tier big like Nene or Dalembert, and in a way I feel as if the nixed trade saved Morey (someone I usually laud as a genius) from himself. No way in hell do those guys deserve near max deals and I feel they would get signed to insanely bloated contracts. I feel Morey has been itching for a big for so long due to our Yao troubles, and may lose his head in the pursuit of one.

So in summary, Lakers come out even this year, but way ahead for the future; Hornets come out ahead on the court this year but are handcuffed for the future; and The Rockets come out slightly worse this year, with much more flexibility for the future.

Of course the Rockets and Lakers get all the flex because the NBA-owned Hornets become a dumping ground for all the salaries (and this is coming from a fan of the main dumpers).

I agree with the majority of the points you make, I believe the pieces that Houston ships out are going to shift, and that LA will have to take on a contract somewhere in the equation.

I understand what you're saying about the Dwight piece, but at the same time, you can't really count on that one way or the other.

As if there is any real doubt that Howard and Paul won't end up in LA regardless. This circus is all for appearances.

I love my Rockets. Like I said, they will show up to play and not whine like little bitches (even though they have a right to).

I almost don't want to bring in Gasol for the fact that he has already he stated he doesn't want to play in Houston, and who really wants to build around a guy who doesn't want to be there and may half *** it as a result?

at this point I feel like damage has been done and that the trade should really should just follow through. Its hard to fix the chemistry the lakers might have just lost.

But at the same time, Pau Gasol doesn't want to go to Houston (apparently) and Lamar Odom is just...yeah. I know Khloe will support Odom so I don't think he'd make a big deal out of going to NO simply because he has a family, outside endeavors, etc.

Gasol, on the other hand, who knows.

Either way, you don't want a guy to half-a** it on your team.

I gotta say, I'm getting really annoyed with this "trade me here" or "if you trade me, release me and I'm going ____" crap.
I'm sick of this stuff too at times but I can't blame O'neal. He was going to retire but stayed because he wanted to make a championship run. Going to the Hornets he can't. So he's going to retire. I have no issue with him if he actually retires.
