Re: Air Jordans Release Day = Violence
Never understood the fascination people have over Jordans, or any sneaker over 100 dollars.
This just puzzles me more. Its a bum *** sneaker released 10 years ago...they are literally getting your money again for the same nonsense from 96. I bet a significant bunch of those people already have a pair of the same damn thing they just bought.Comment

Re: Air Jordans Release Day = Violence
Since the V's, I've had various other pairs of Jordans and I've played basketball in all of them. The one true exception was the pair of I's I bought around '01. The soles on I's are so thin and narrow it feels as though you're playing barefoot and playing basketball in them thus makes little sense. Otherwise, my logic has been, if MJ could rock these shoes non-stop during his playing days, then I'm thinking they're going to be just fine for me too. And yes, I know he had a new pair every game or two, but I have to say with full honesty, Jordan's shoes have not fallen apart on me in a quicker manner than any other pairs of basketball shoes I've ever worn. If anything, they've far outlasted my other shoes (my Hyperdunks ripped within the first four months of playing in them - something that was known to happen with the entire line of the first edition of Hypers).
In truth, I buy basketball shoes when I see a style I like. It just so happens that oftentimes, that style is certain pairs of Jordans. Sometimes it may coincide with a hot release (I like those Concord XI's, even though I'd never have a chance of getting a pair) and sometimes I like styles that aren't popular (a pair of white and forest green XIV's I bought in '06).
Again though, I play a lot of basketball, and most of my Jordan's have lasted around three years or more, which I find to be very equitable for a pair of basketball shoes. For extreme comparison, the two pairs of Starbury's I bought lasted for three months each (though I used those ones outside right away, which tends to grind shoes down in a hurry). Some people use their spare money for say, cable television. Others use their spare money on lower level tickets at an NBA basketball game. I just happened to save up my change to buy a pair of basketball shoes I could commit a couple of years of basketball to. And truly, as a guy who needs all the advantages he can get in order to dunk and generally perform on the basketball court, I don't think I could rock Jordan's in good faith if they were negatively affecting my performance. On top of that, I'm not nearly rich enough to afford buying Jordan's if they were just going to rip on me right away.Last edited by VDusen04; 12-25-2011, 09:16 AM.Comment

Re: Air Jordans Release Day = Violence
Pretty much any Jordan retro bought before '06 was made of quality materials. So anything you bought 1999-2005 doesn't apply to what I was saying, those were still good sneakers.
If you owned the original of any of the 1-13's (or retros '99-'05) and then purchased a '06-today retro you can tell how drastically the padding has been cut down, how much cheaper/thinner the leather is etc. I still have Concords, Cool Grey and Columbia XI's from 2000-01 and the quality is so much better. Just walking around in the '09 Space Jams or '10 Cool Greys you can tell how much worse they are, you don't even need to play basketball in them. Zero ventilation, virtually no cushioning. Have you seen the new JB boxes they're using in 2012? They're now color coded (something like yellow is basketball/performance, red is lifestyle and blue is training) and all of the OG retros are classified under red meaning JB is straight up telling consumers not to play ball in them.
Also, college players are playing way more often and at a much harder pace than any casual OS poster. My freshman year in college our team was sponsored by Reebok and we got some crappy TB $85 sneaker. I went through four of them during the season, basically one sneaker per a month. I finally ditched them and went back to wearing expensive Nikes which lasted just fine. It's a whole different story when you're playing in college vs anything else."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

And surely, I'm not stating I work as frequently as a member of a college basketball team, but I'm also not a guy who's just out there putting up a couple of jump shots and jogging down the court in an adult league once or twice a week. If a shoe was really that poor of quality, they would not hold up for my use. Perhaps the real litmus test will come with the other pair of V's I bought here in 2011. It's been so far, so good. After wearing the V's for a while I sometimes switch to my Hyperdunks, which surely feel lighter, but seem to be not quite as stable.
To be clear, I've heard the push of retro Jordan's being labeled as "off court" by shoe outlets (and Jordan Brand itself). However, my interpretation of that label has been that it's the company's attempt to 1) Draw appeal to the current Jordan Brand shoes (because they recognize and know the retro appeal will be there regardless) and 2) Their way of saying "this is old technology and while it worked for players back then, we have better on court tech for you to wear now". Of course I could be quite wrong, I don't know the in's and out's of shoe technology and how retros are made in comparison to how they were a few years ago, but to this point, through a lot of heavy, hard play, they've worked out for me.Last edited by VDusen04; 12-25-2011, 12:21 PM.Comment

Re: Air Jordans Release Day = Violence
My cousin works in Finish Line at a mall in Louisville, and they had to call the cops cause the crowd broke the gate at the front of the store.
In Jeffersonville (south Indiana), They had size cards, and the guy asat the store made the awful decision to just throw them in the air.

For me it's not about hood status. It's not about reselling, not about hooping in them, not about any of those things.
The Concord XI's remind me of my childhood. A time when the NBA was at it's peak. A time in which Michael Jordan came back from what was certain retirement and took my favorite team the Chicago Bulls to a 72-10 record making mockery of the entire league outside of the Charlotte Hornets.
It was the shoe my favorite player wore on my favorite team, during their best year in franchise history. As a kid it was an impossible request to even think about wearing these shoes, let alone asking for them for Christmas. My family didn't have money like that.
When these shoes came out again around 2000, I was in a better situation but still couldn't get them due to my mom getting laid off about a month or two before they dropped.
then these past 3 years when they dropped the cool grey's and space jams and Breds it had been one L after another due to these crazy hypebeasts and riots and sell outs and hilariously high ebay prices.
For me I stood in line not because I was all that fascinated in the shoe, I don't even wear Jordan's like that anymore. For me it was putting one more try at getting a shoe I always wanted as a kid and could never have due to circumstances beyond a kid's control. While people were standing in line talking about how much they were going to make after they flipped their 10 pairs, I just kept thinking how cool it would be to finally secure my pair after 15 years of waiting.
I'm not sure if this answers the question, but I thought I'd atleast offer some insight on another reason people were out there. For some like me there was a little more to the dynamic, then just owning a pair of fresh nikes.Last edited by lilbiggio; 12-25-2011, 04:19 PM.Comment

That said, what went down over these shoes is absolutely ridiculous.Comment

Re: Air Jordans Release Day = Violence
That happened in Brooklynright on 86th street (for the guys here from NY you know where I'm talking about) I just bought my pair and then saw this going on. I tucked the box into my body like a football and sprinted to a dunkin donuts about 4 blocks away. I feared for my life, and in all of my camping experiences ( I have camped 4 times for Jordans) this is by far the worst. I feared for my life and I never ran that fast. I am not gonna let this one experience stop me from camping ever again but lets just say it is going to be a while before I do it again.
