So it because it doesn't affect me personally, I shouldn't be against expansion? Is that how it works nowadays?

Hell, we all know what the biggest problem for the league is as it's painfully obvious by now(especially if you read the game threads everyday)why is expansion a much more important issue than that, Seattle bias aside?

The same "anti-expansion" arguments given today are the same anti-expansion arguments given when MLB stole the Seattle Pilots and moved them to Milwaukee in the 1960's.

The quality of players, the lack of fan support, all of it. The simple fact is, it isn't true when looked at in the long-run.

I think the Seattle group is willing to go the hard path and pursue everything up to and including pursuing anti-trust litigation to get a team in Seattle. If you are the NBA, it is better to get ahead of the curve and not lag behind it.

Eventually, whether you agree or disagree with expansion, this group will prevail in court - the precedents set over the last 100 years are quite clear and it is only a matter of time. The NBA would be smart to get ahead of this and maintain some control over the proceedings.

You ask why expansion is more important then these perceived issues such as quality player depth. The answer is: the determination and ability of private citizens to participate in a business venture, one that often involves public financing and support.

Major league baseball has an anti-trust exemption in America, but it is the only business cartel that does. Various court litigation throughout the last 100+ years shows that these group associations, whether it is the NBA, the NFL or even MLB are put under a very intense microscopic lens and that their authority to "regulate and determine" even the most simple aspects of their sport is suspect.

As an example, look at the most recent litigation involving the NFL - both the Al Davis battles and the USFL case. These cases show that in essence, the ultimate ability of the league to regulate is quite limited. Even MLB, with its exemption, is limited, as the expansion of the late 1960's and 1970's show.

MLB argued all of these "expansion issues" that we see arrayed today in the NBA. Never-the-less, Congress was willing to get involved to allow further expansion and the courts acted to curtail any power used to limit expansion.

The NBA today, has a choice: to be reactionary and end up weakening itself in the long run ability to govern itself or to be pro-active and enable the inevitable in a way that it is able to keep its influence over the process.

This simple reality is why expansion is such an important issue; one greater then any anti-expansion issue seen to date.

Right because the NBA NEEDS Seattle to have a team to survive over the long term.

Again, congrats to Sacramento for keeping their team.

No, the NBA needs to keep the ability to govern the league to survive over the long run. If the Seattle group is willing to pursue a scorched earth policy to get a Seattle team (and I think they will) then the NBA has two choices: support expansion now or allow the Sacramento team to be moved, even without its consent.

The better choice, for both the NBA and everyone else involved is expansion.

I personally don't want the Sac team (except maybe a certain PG from this area) and really hope expansion is announced soon.

Do you actually want to contribute to this discussion, or do you just want to troll? If it's the latter, there are much better, more productive ways you can contribute to OS.

Taer is right, expansion is the best option at this point, considering how the NBA wants to handle this situation. And I also agree with the prediction that the Seattle group will eventually pursuit a scorched earth approach, for 3 reasons:

              1. There's a binding sales agreement in place between the Seattle group and the Maloofs, and the NBA seems like they are contemptuous enough to ignore that, and void the sale on absolutely no financial grounds at all. Just because they think they can.

              2. Sacramento has been given chance after chance, had deadlines pushed back for them, and if yesterday's news is any indication, even been allowed to embezzle public money. These are the things that make this personal for the Seattle group and Seattle as a whole, because none of the same sort of leeway was given to us back in 2008. Meanwhile, the NBA seems to be willing to go as far as allowing KJ to break federal laws just to get a new arena.

The third reason is arguably the most important reason.

              3. The NBA keeps changing the rules to get the desirable end result.

Ever since David Stern became commissioner, the NBA has set a precedent for how the NBA does business: new arena or bust. Name the cities: Kansas City, Charlotte, Vancouver, Seattle... the name of the game has been to hold a city hostage until the owner gets what he wants.

So the one time that the city of Seattle played by the same rules the league set for themselves, NOW Stern wants to worry about his legacy? NOW sentimental value is worth something? 20+ years of support is NOW worth more than 41 YEARS OF SUPPORT? You want to tell the Maloofs who they can and can't sell to?

In case it hasn't hit you yet, this isn't even about the Kings anymore. This is about being fair, and it's about how a league full of extortionists keeps changing the rules and abusing power, which is why antitrust laws exist in the first place. So, expansion is the best option because it's the fairest option for both cities at this point, unless the NBA wants Chris Hansen to become Donald Sterling Jr...

Damn ya'll Seattle people are sensative because it was obviously a joke. Take the stick out of your *** and relax, man.

I'll be glad when this whole thing is over. Thank goodness I live on the East Coast where I ain't gotta hear this mess every single day otherwise I'd lose my mind.

I'm pretty sure no one picked up on it being a "joke". Especially since a key characteristic of a joke is some measure of humor. Trolling does not equal a joke.

I know y'all are pissed right now but damn. What's the deal it's not a secret why expansion isn't in the best interest of the league. They already got teams that can barely fill up half their arena, schedule makers that appear to be in over their heads doing their jobs and it's another team to split money with. Why is everybody jumping on Pack for?

We don't have a team. I just shut my mouth and hope. I do that a lot.

The Sacramento ownership group has agreed to opt out of revenue sharing as part of their deal to stay in Sacramento.

Quoting an anonymous source, the magazine said the group led by Vivek Ranadive agreed to accept fewer revenue-sharing dollars while the team was still playing at Sleep Train Arena. Once the team moves into the proposed downtown arena, the Kings would take no money at all.
