So, theoretically, you'd rather pay someone like J.R. Smith more money than Shane Battier? Are you nuts?!

How many NBA players are actually huge factors on defense?

      See: Andrew Bogut.

His defensive impact spread throughout the team. His guidance and defensive awareness helped him help his teammates be better on the defensive end.

Good defense goes a long way, and if it takes somewhat overpaying some great ball stoppers to instill better defensive chemistry amongst the team, then all the better.
How many playoff series has he even played in ?

Hell yes ! It's way easier to coach a player to be a better defender than it is to be a better offensive player

          1.

but what exactly does that have to do with the impact he has on the defensive side of the ball?

          nothing at all.

also see: Dwight Howard, Tony Allen, Shane Battier

Often when it comes down to the last possession, the team gives the ball to their best offensive player and lets them go to work. And when he calls for that isolation, you think teams are going to play a zone? Hardly do teams ever play a zone, because it still leaves others vulnerable for open shots. What the defense usually does is put their defensive specialists on the threat. (Also, see Aaron Afflalo on Kobe) Those defenders go a long *** way.

            Dennis Rodman

-1 of the top NBA players EVER- Man knew how to play the game.

            Limited offense at best.

Well I can assure you, he certainly isn't known for his offense. I'm curious to know what you consider him known for?

Doesn't exactly work like that. Just cause he's playing for the vets minimum right now doesn't mean he wasn't worth the 5 mil he got from the Bulls two years ago. Especially considering how this deal was only for one year and the only reason he wasn't brought back to Chicago in the first place is because Jimmy Butler is there.

Let me ask you something. Which of these two men makes their team better every time he steps on the floor?

                  Hint: It's not J.R. Smith.

You really don't think it's easier to coach a player to be a better defender than it is to be a better offensive player? Being a better defender just takes heart and discipline like you all have stated.

Your not going to see Reggie Evans become Kevin Love on the offensive end within a summer. But you could see Carmelo Anthony become a Ron Artest-like (circa 2004) defender within a few practices.

A scorer can have off nights. Will he be valuable to his team during that night? No.

Carmelo Anthony has to be one of the number one candidates for worst defenders in the NBA, by the way. Not sure if you watch the NBA or not.

You can't simply put "heart" or necessarily fully discipline grown *** men in the NBA. To be a great defender is to take it upon yourself. It takes high basketball IQ. Something a lot of NBA players lack now-a-days (See; J.R. Smith)

I'm convinced you don't even play Basketball in real life. You're just a 2k fan. You must be. To tell me that anybody could be as good of a defender as Ron Artest within a few practices just shows me how low YOUR basketball IQ is.

I'm done. You're pretty dumb. lol

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I knew i was going to take heat for this, and i understand. You guys are trained by the media and these analyst to praise guys like Shane Battier.

Doc Rivers turned Paul Pierce into a solid defender. Carmelo Anthony isn't terrible. He's just lazy as hell, and i believe Mike Woodson is going to teach J.R. and Carmelo to become better defenders. I do play ball in real life. High school team is ranked top 10 in Long Island.

Okay maybe College Basketball, and definitely High school basketball are better examples. Scorers are more valued than defenders. These are bold statement that no one wants to admit to.

high school and college basketball is not the same as the nba. elite defenders are valuable pieces in the nba. if you disagree, then you're kinda disagreeing with almost all of nba history, which is fine, but this is why no one else here will ever agree with your stance.
