Re: In the expansion draft, who would you keep, and who would you expo

The rules to the expansion draft are a lot more complicated than just the protection of just 8 players by each team.

Here are most of the rules:

      </font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
POOL OF PLAYERS: Each of the 29 existing NBA teams can protect eight veterans from the expansion draft. Any player not protected, who is under contract to an NBA team, is available to the Bobcats.

The Bobcats may not draft a player who isn't under contract to the NBA, even if an NBA team holds his draft rights.

NO. OF SELECTIONS: The Bobcats must draft a minimum of 14 players off other rosters. Since no existing team can lose more than one player, the maximum the Bobcats can draft is 29.

FREE AGENTS: Teams don't have to protect their unrestricted free agents. The rule is slightly different for restricted free agents, (for which a team can match any other team's contract offer).

If a restricted free agent is left unprotected, the Bobcats can draft him. However, that player would then become an unrestricted free agent - with no obligation to play for the Bobcats.

      (Important)
The team that lost him would be barred from re-signing him in the summer of 2004. Restricted free agents would count against the minimum 14 selections Charlotte will make in the expansion draft.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

The other rule not mentioned here is that the Bobcats are entitled to only two-thirds of the salary cap in its first season and only three-quarters of the salary cap in its second season.

It looks like all you fans of teams with depth dont have to worry as much because you can only lose at most ONE exposed player.

The rule about making restricted free agents unrestricted by being drafted but no obligation to Charlotte is very interesting.

EDIT: I believe somebody mentioned earlier that a restricted free agent becomes unrestricted by being left unprotected but thats not quite what the rules state. The rules say if an unprotected RFA is DRAFTED by the Bobcats, then he becomes a UFA, without having to join the Bobcats, but it appears as though he stays restricted if he isnt drafted.

I think for the sake of the franchise the Heat have to leave Jones and/or Grant available with the off chance that Charlotte would take one of them. That might even be one of those situations where Miami would give Charlotte a future first rounder and cash to get them to take Grant or Jones.
