What rules in the NBA need to go?

Me personally, I hate the new 'delay of game' warning where a player cannot touch the ball after their team has scored. The rule simply causes more unnecessary delay. And so what if a player touches the ball or throws it to the refs? It'll only waste a second or two as opposed to stopping the game completely. The only exception that the rule should be applied is when a player intentionally holds the ball for an extended period of time or throws/knocks the ball into the crowd (i.e., purposely trying to delay the game).

Also, the 'Hack-a-Shaq' strategy is kind of lame. IMO it should be the player that has possession of the ball that shoots the free throw as opposed to the player getting intentionally fouled. Talk about delay of game right? :P

Not really a rule but the whole playoff qualification structure. Should be top 16 teams regardless of conference. Each seed is determined by record, matches scheduled by only seed number with home court advantage to the lower seed.

      Excessive Hanging on the rim.

Gerald Henderson hangs on the rim for a second longer than he should a technical is called.

LeBron James hangs on the rim 5 seconds longer than he should the refs smile and nod their heads at each other.

*It wasn't a safety issue. There were no defenders near either dunker.

Offensive Player initiating contact and the defender gets whistled for a foul.

Gerald Henderson lowers his shoulder into defender and it is immediately whistled an offensive foul. (As it should be.)

LeBron James lowers his shoulder into a defender as he bullies his way into the paint and he goes to the line for an and 1.

*All I ask for is consistency.

      Basket Interference

I agree with Stern. Let's move to the international rules here. If it the ball is above the rim it is live.

Always hated the 3 second defensive rule. Either bring back the old style of strictly playing man-to-man defense OR allow teams to play a pure zone.

I honestly like every rules in this game, it's just the consistency at wich they're called that hurts the game.

I woudn't want the Goal tending rule to be removed. I hate it when I watch european basketball.

Actually I don't like the rules that take away freedom and character from the players. Players should be able to show their emotions on the court.

I'd heavily reduce the amount of time-outs. I've tinkered around with the idea of giving each team only one single time-out in the final minute of play. This would allow squads to move the ball to halfcourt when time absolutely dictates it (say, when they gain possession with 3.5 seconds left) but may otherwise prevent the most exciting moments of games from being turned into 80% bore, 20% maybe-cool.

I'd love to see more exchanges like this:

            <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/_s7GRqCiXIE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

... as opposed to every single possession change resulting in a two minute commercial break. I'll forever have nightmares of the Bobcats-Pistons game I went to last year that featured 9-12 timeouts in the span of the final minute of regulation and the duration of the five minute overtime. It was torture.

cut timeouts to 3 a half..... seriously this **** is rediculous with a coach calling 4 in the last couple minutes alone

              go to international goaltending rules

stop treating superstars differently (i can dream cant i?)

---bonus! add 1 coach challenge per half, useable on ANY play

I like the reducing of the timeouts and I like the international ball-above-the cylinder rule.

I don't think you can have 4 timeouts in the 4th quarter, can you?

Besides they would never reduce the number of timeouts imo, too much money involved.

This is the real problem, the consistency of the calls. I also love how the same exact foul will be called differently depending on what part of the game it's at.

Re: What rules in the NBA need to go?

The international rules I like are basket interference (this is a no-brainer IMO) and that players cannot call timeouts during live-ball situations (only coaches). I'd love for teams to only be allowed one timeout in the final two minutes of a game as well.

Offense fouls have gotten better but as mentioned above they need to start punishing offensive players for creating contact, or at least stop punishing defensive players. It's cheap bull**** and the NBA is better than that.

A challenge system would be nice but so many basketball calls are judgement calls. You wouldn't be able to use a challenge on a block/charge even if it's a horribly incorrect call.

Off the court, divisions sorely need to go. They're archaic and they haven't helped so called "geographical rivalries" at all. I'd be all for ditching the Eastern/Western conferences and moving to an MLB/NFL format with teams from each conference/league on both coasts. I mentioned this in another thread but it's pretty clear that the West is going to continue to be a superior conference for the foreseeable future. Ownership/management is simply better in the West and given that ownership changes so infrequently we'll have this imbalance for perhaps an entire generation. We may only be a dozen years into a 25-30 year stretch of Western Conference dominance. I want to see the best teams facing off in the Finals. If it's Lakers/Spurs in the Finals then so be it. If it's Pacers/Heat then so be it.

Re: What rules in the NBA need to go?

Like someone else said, rules are fine, the problem is the consistency of the rules.Too many times I've seen certain teams/players getting calls that others didn't. Especially the "superstars" and "big name teams".

During Raptors-Pacers game, commentators did state that certain things weren't being called(on either end) cause it was like playoff basketball, so refs were calling the game as if it were a playoff. I don't care if it's a playoff team or the two worst in the league, if something is a foul in one game, it should be a foul in another.

And that whole issue with players no longer being able to touch the ball after a basket is stupid. I remember in school, my coach used to tell everyone on the team that after they scored, to get the ball and give it to the ref, because it was showing good sportsmanship. Yet somehow in the NBA, now suddenly they've turned it into a bad thing?

And sometimes refs don't even call it still. Another game I was watching, a player bounced the ball into the floor seats area after scoring, and the ref wasn't looking and nobody called anything.

Re: What rules in the NBA need to go?

Destroying conferences is not a good idea. The NBA would completely have redo their entire scheduling system.. Likely change the total number of games played, and how many times each teams play each other. Too drastic of a change and it's not really a flaw it's worked for like 500 years now..

If scheduling was changed the "top teams" would take a big shift as well.. Yes the West is overall better than the East.. But part of that also lies on the fact that West teams play no defense at all. It's no surprise the only two teams who consistently have a solid defensive foundation, OKC and SA, finish at the top every year in the West despite having much less firepower on offense and in OKC's case pretty much no offensive structure at all.

Yes teams in the East are overall worse but they would steal games from defense and lack of from West teams.. The past few seasons haven't really been that bad.. This season is because teams in the East who have the talent to be good are greatly underperforming. And injuries. Teams like NY, BK, Chi..

Whatever rule that allows Hibbert to go straight up under the rim with rare foul calls needs to be allowed for everyone. Not really sure how they reward him with a silent whistle while everyone else gets whistled for a millimeter of sneaker resting on the charge circle. I'd just like to see everyone get the silent whistle. Think that would reward the shot blockers more and allow some great challenges at the rim.
