          Re: 1/7 - 1/13 Games Discussion Thread

The Mavericks hung on for a 110-107 win over the Pelicans on Saturday, and Monta Ellis hacked the heck out of Austin Rivers on the game’s final play to ensure that would be the case.
No foul was called by the officials at the time, however, and a day later, the league issued a statement acknowledging that the call was missed.
“After reviewing postgame video, we have determined a foul should have been called on Dallas’ Monta Ellis for illegal contact on the arms of New Orleans’ Austin Rivers while Rivers was attempting a three-point field goal,” Rod Thorn, NBA President, Basketball Operations said in the official release. “Rivers should have been awarded three free throws with 0.6 left on the clock.”
          My two-word reaction: You think?
Look, we completely understand that the referees would rather let the games be decided by the players rather than the whistles, and for that reason, they are reluctant to make calls on last-second plays on the trailing team’s possession that occur so far from the basket.
But sometimes, the players give the officials no choice, and this should have been one of those occurrences.
This is the second time this season the Mavericks have benefited by a late non-call that the league later admitted was a mistake. Shawn Marion committed a foul on Kevin Love that went unchecked, preserving a victory in similar fashion.

Well I guess I stand corrected. Still think it was on the floor though.

These apologies are getting old though. It's great that the league is willing to admit their mistakes, but they need to be proactive in training refs to be better in this situation and if they can't, instituting a system to make sure the correct call is called on the floor.

Next season, guarantee they expand replay to cover last second plays and be able to call a foul if one occurs.

That would make them the first league to be able to retroactively call a foul wouldnt it? (excuse my MLB\NHL\soccor ignorance if not)

I completely agree with. But I just think humans are going to make mistakes no matter how much training they get.

Honestly I don't know why the league just don't put another ref on the floor the game is so much faster than it was 15-20 years ago. With all the flopping and what not just add another body out there for another vantage point.

I agree with you jeebs, but this moment in discussion isn't an example of a human being making a mistake. You could see that mugging in real time without even needing a replay. Two refs were standing there looking right at it from different angles and just didn't blow the whistle.

A foul is "subjective" but when you have referees as the enforcers of the rule of a foul, it no longer becomes subjective; whether it's a foul or not becomes their fact.

I'm not gonna pretend having them retroactively call fouls is a good idea or will even work. I do think it's inevitable if the idea is to get the call right.

If a ref misses a foul, isn't really gonna be the official rule change.

The NBA would word it to say all final shots are reviewable, and any and all calls pertaining to the ball handler and his defender can be made using replay of that final possession.

They already check to see if an off ball foul was made before or after a shot attempt. I don't think expanding this would be a stretch. And it wouldn't add anymore time then they are already spending reviewing a final shot.
