Re: 2016 NBA Offseason Thread
Now the rumour is Aldridge is unhappy because of Leonard being the first option and not aldridge as originally promised by the Spurs.
I don't believe any of that ****. I wish it was true though but it's so unSpurs like.Last edited by Vni; 10-19-2016, 04:43 PM.Comment

Re: 2016 NBA Offseason Thread
Melo trips me up.
The D-League is a minor league system. It's comparable is to baseball minor leagues, not pro overseas leagues.
Should salaries go up? Sure. I think it's crazy that D-League players make something like $25K/yr.
But it's a bastardized system. To me it's more beneficial for D-League coaches to gain experience more than the players. The competition is on equal footing and is nothing more than a glorified street all game for the few times I've watched it.
Melo mentioned academies which I think is a good idea but that would royally screw the NCAA and their greed.Comment

Most NBA players come from college and make the rosters through the draft.
Baseball players, even the ones drafted very high or signed to lucrative international deals are still put on a minor league team to prove themselves.
NBA has drafted 18 or 19 year olds who've become good or great players, without playing in college.
The nature of the game is such that talented young players can at least make NBA rosters.
The other problem is that the D-League or the CBL before it couldn't generate revenues to sustain itself. If non-NBA cities would support such teams, then maybe they could have higher salaries.
Baseball minor leaguers don't get a big salary either. The ones drafted high do get a big signing bonus though, which could be well into 8 figures. But such players aren't expected to be in the minor leagues a long time or else someone made a big mistake signing the prospects.Comment

2. A glorified street game? Teams are using the same offenses that are being run by the same teams that own them.#RespectTheCultureComment

Yea I agree with most of this. Baseball and Basketball are two completely different things when it comes to development. Top 5 picks in basketball go straight to an NBA team where 99% baseball players play at least 1 full year in the minors before being called up. And not one of the top 5 kids in the MLB draft have even sniffed the major leagues yet. And won't for another year plus, most likely. I think projections for them are like 2018/19. So they spend like 2-3 years in the minors before being called up. And this is common practice for most drafted guys (high school seniors 17/18 year olds) and especially the international guys (who sign pro contracts at 16). So the international guys it's more like 4-5 years.

Right the international guys get stashed but I don't see a guy like Ben Simmons or Jaylen Brown getting stashed like Mickey Moniack or Ian Anderson in the MLB. Both are the 1 and 3 picks in their drafts respectively. The main difference between the two is the age component. You say a guy is supposed to start his peak at 21-22 in the NBA whereas in the MLB that is when these guys make their debut. Also IMO, in the MLB the rookies get more time to develop and fix their flaws before they start playing against the competition in the world. And the NBA guys are thrown straight into the fire.

Re-branding it just means dumping more money into it to steer players away from signing overseas. That can't be sustained because no one in their right mind wants to pay to see a D-League game.
The D-League isn't a proving ground the way it's currently set up. It's almost like a lower league (thinking soccer structure). Only a few guys get called up per year and it's usually due to injury or the team just sucks.
That is why I compared it to baseball.
Melo seems to want to make it into something which it can't be because of money.
I think they should work with the int'l basketball leagues because they have a structure that's already set up and working. There's not enough talent across the board in the D-League.
I think the D-League is a losing venture because the NCAA doesn't want players bypassing college nor earning a dime. So these kids do their 1 year...are not ready for the NBA...and get stuck earning $25K to play against other scrubs.
Choose a high level league overseas and have a select team of these players. They'll get paid more...play against better comp and be better prepared to be called up.
Having a D-League affiliate for every NBA team just turns into a dumping ground with very little interest.Comment

I talked about this before... the D-League is not a true minor league.. Some teams don't even have one the contracts are not the same... It would be a real good use of this TV money instead of giving the Dengs of the world 60 mil.. lolComment

Melo wants to turn into a baseball minor league. Now the image is if you are on a D-League you are a scrub, what if you lowered the draft age to 18 but made players under 19 have to play in the minor league for a year... so players get paid under the rookie contracts and GMs aren't burned at the stake for taking a project or two and so on.. I love the idea always have.Comment
