Based on WS/48, Calderon is an average NBA point guard/starter. I think that's all the context we need in that regard.

Not that I'm getting overly hyped for Rose...

So all that insta-retirement and launching his career as an erotic novelist was bogus?

Rose was pretty awful this past season. He was so frustrating to watch. Hopefully he plays better for NY in his contract year but Im not sad to see him go in the least.

We'll always have great memories of the early years.

Honestly, I have a hard time envisioning Rose being nearly as bad as he was this past season. It's pretty much impossible to go an entire year being one of the primary shot takers while being as inefficient as he was. You don't really see starting PG's with as poor of metrics as his were this past season. The only players at any position that ranked worse in WS/48 than Rose this past year were (filtering it for guys that played at least 20 minutes per game, if you include complete scrubs that don't even play then you get 17 worse than Rose):

            D'Angelo Russell
            Kobe
            OJ Mayo
            Emmanuel Mudiay
            and Norris Cole

              re: 2016 NBA Offseason Thread

Like I said, I think it's more about flexibility than anything. Now, just having looked at a few contract sites, I don't see anyone we'll have signed after this year other than Melo, Porzingis, and Kyle O'Quinn. I don't know the ramifications of that on how many maxes we can offer and things like that but I think the move was more for financial flexibility than anything else. If Melo were to agree to be traded (which will not happen and I don't want really), we'd basically reset after next year with Porzingis and KOQ and do whatever we want.

Just from a basketball standpoint though, I don't believe Derrick Rose will be worse for us next year than Calderon was this year, just can't believe it's possible lol. Dude was such a turnstyle on D I really believe having him on the floor on that end was bad for everyone else, anyone point guard with even slightly above average agility would just walk past him. I could be wrong, or D-Rose could snap whatever's remaining of the things he claims are ligaments around his knees mistakenly checking his mail on a Sunday, I just would have to see it. He's in a contract year which motivates guys, and Calderon just sucks. Rose's ceiling is higher than Calderon's for sure and so is the team's.

Now if we go out and sign Dwight to a max, **** me.

Man y'all and your advanced statistics lmao.

I love stats as much as anyone, but they have to be in context. I won't pretend Rose had a good year by any stretch, but I also remember how slowly he readjusted to the point he ended up leveling off at. If you're including those early games, you're not getting a good gauge of who he really was this year.

From the eye test alone, the player he ended the year as >>> Calderon.

Yeah didn't he have something where he had double vision for a part of the year?

Yup, I agree with all that. If you sign a guy like Dwight to a long-term deal, this trade makes no sense. For now at least, I can understand if the plan is basically to have a completely free salary cap for next offseason. I still think it's a poor move, but I can at least understand the rationale if they have no interest in extending Rose or signing Howard.

I think Rose is better than Calderon but YTG obliterated me on the Porzingis draft pick chatter so I shut up now.

Here's the problem with stats without context again. Derrick spent like the first two or three months of the season playing with double vision from the orbital injury. Dude was playing solid ball after the All-Star break, but his numbers were so terrible that it makes his whole year look awful.

Just remembered that Rose dropped a 30-piece on Calderon at the Garden towards the end of the season. Glad to see the old turnstyle sent away to Chi-Town.
