Yep, its shocking how bad our defense is, yet were still in the game. I cant remember a year where the Pacers were a playoff team, and they had such a poor defensive team. 1 thing in all my years, outside of the Jim O'brien years, was we typically played solid defense. This year has been as frustrating as I can remember outside of the JOB years as head coach, and the 70's when we stunk it up pretty good, lol.

With Dan Burke still with the team, and Nate also being known as a defensive guy, you would have thought we would have been better than we have been this yr.

Personally Id like to see a more smash mouth basketball approach, like Pacers have been known for over the years, but with the ability to push it when need be. We couldnt do that back when Hibbert was here, but with a few minor roster changes, we could play a more physical game.

We don't really have defensive players though. It's on Bird and McMillan isn't that good of a coach either, mostly on Bird though for that. PG is good but other than him who else do we have that is a good defender lol. Turner seems to be more of a shot blocker than an actual good defender. We traded Hill for Teague which gave us a boost offensively but Hill is much better on the other side. We didn't resign Mahinmi and replaced him with Thad Young. Ellis is Ellis. We should've known this was going to happen really. So should have Bird.

We should still be better defensively than what we are, its team defense, and not rotating quickly enough, or not rotating at all in some cases, lol. You dont have to have a bunch of good 1 on 1 defenders to be a descent defensive team.

Nate had some good teams in Portland, so I wouldnt say he is really a bad coach, but I dont think he was the right fit for us. Bird is 1 of the smartest basketball minds ever, but Im not a fan of his wanting a more small ball approach, to pick up the pace. You can get a faster pace, and still be a tough defensive squad to deal with.
I know Bird felt the players werent paying as much attention to Vogel as they had in previous years, so he didnt give Vogel a new contract. But Im not sure they have been giving Nate their full attention either. Maybe we did need a change at HC,although I wonder if we wouldnt have been better this yr if we had Coach Vogel still.

Changes are going to be needed, and it may start with getting rid of Nate. I wasnt overly fond of Nate getting the job, and while 1 yr I guess isnt technically fair to judge a HC, I wont be sad if Nate is let go. Personally I would love to see Brad Stevens come home, but I dont see him leaving Boston either, lol.
The guy I had hoped Bird would go to, was Mark Jackson last yr. I thought he did a excellent job with the Warriors, and he wasnt let go by them because of how he coached, I actually think it had more to do with his religious views, or that was a rumor anyway. He would fit right in with us in Indiana, and he is still highly thought of around here from his playing days with us. Off the top of my head, he would be the 1 guy I would hire as coach, thats not currently a HC now. My guess is Bird wont fire Nate, after just 1 season.

I agree we should still be better on defense, it's not all on the players, but that's where Nate comes into play and where he has failed. Some of the stuff we do defensively is just mind boggling. We don't seem to have any sort of gameplan defensively. That tied in with the fact our players aren't good defenders in general leads to what you see.

I doubt Bird fires him this summer because based on his history he gives his coaches multiple years. Which is actually a good trait as a GM, but bad at the same time... IMO Nate needs to go like right now lol.

Our only real hope is PG makes all NBA and resigns and Bird can salvage something with this roster over the summer, but honestly it's hard not to be pessimistic. It's looking more and more like we're gonna lose PG and be stuck in the lottery for awhile.
