On paper this is a lateral move for Cleveland. There are only 3 ways this trade really has a chance of making them better.
1.) If LeBron leaves they have a first round pick. Also a couple All Stars to build around, and the ability to ditch IT's contract and Love's the next season or via trade. They should be able to move forward.
2.) This trade sets up other trades. Crowder gives them flexible to run small with he and LeBron making a Love trade a possibility. They could move the pick to bring in another big name. Shump might have a shot to be moved for something more useful to the team. Etc.
3.) Thomas ends up being a better fit. Time will only tell in this case, but if IT is better at reading the high pick and roll situations and making life easier for Bron and Love this likely ends up a better fit for them offensively. Kyrie is incredible, maybe the best 1 on 1 guy in the league. But you always play percentages with him. If he's hot you're going to win, if not you probably won't. He doesn't aid any of the other players on most nights. If IT is a better fit and hypothetically (probably not Pack) that pick turns into a Porter/Bagley and LeBron stays.. they're set up for a couple more years of contending.
