    Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

So the top players who've been all-stars multiple season, even won MVPs or runner-ups, just got $40 million a year. In fact players like Curry, Westbrook and Harden have been All-NBA more seasons than Embiid has played.

Yet Embiid is going to make an average of $30 million a year after having played less than a season's worth of games?

What was the 76ers record and net ratings when he played more than 20-25 minutes? I know he has a pretty good per36 scoring rate but small sample size.

If they had waited, they could have used his lower cap hold to make bigger signings before inking him to an extension/used whatever offer sheet he signs to hold another team ransom for a little while. If there's only a few teams with significant cap space next season like it's currently projected, this could make a pretty big difference.

Not to mention it at least would have given them a year to see if he can stay healthy before committing to him.

But nobody still doesn’t know the details of the contract, so for all we know, it doesn’t impact their cap situation very much next offseason. And if the market is going to be tight again, then they’re still in good shape.

As long as they gave themselves some protection in the even he doesn’t play a game, then I don’t see a problem with them paying him now. And considering their squad is pretty much set for at least 2-3 years due to being on rookie deals, outside of getting LeBron, George, or Melo, there aren’t really any bigger signings for them to make, as of now.

            Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

New info on Embiid’s new contract, per ProBasketballTalk:

If Joel Embiid stays healthy, he will get all of his max contract extension — approximately $148 million over five years, something he and the Sixers agreed to on Monday. And from what we’ve seen, he would be well worth it.

The question is, what if he doesn’t stay healthy? He has played just 31 games across three NBA seasons, that’s one big Les Misérables-sized red flag.

The Sixers put protections in the contract, and now we have found out some of what they are. If Embiid misses 25 or more games — playing in fewer than 57 — in the final years of the contract due to the recurring injuries that have cost him time in the past, the Sixers have the option to waive him. Adrian Wojnarowski and Bobby Marks of ESPN have the details.

Across each of the final four seasons of the extension, ending with the 2022-23 season, the 76ers could waive Embiid for a financial benefit if he’s lost because of a contractually agreed upon injury that causes him to miss 25 or more regular-season games and if he plays less than 1,650 minutes, league sources said.

Specific injuries are laid out in the contract and only include past problem areas with Embiid’s feet and back, sources said. Embiid has to miss 25 or more regular-season games because of injuries in those areas, and play less than 1,650 minutes, for Philadelphia to have the option of releasing him for cost savings…

If Embiid meets that narrow criteria and the Sixers decided to waive him after the 2018-19 season, he would receive $84.2 million of his full contract; $98.2 million after the 2019-20 season; $113.3 million after the 2020-21 season and $129.4 million after the 2021-22 season.

Some details here. First, it has to be specific injuries that Embiid has battled before — if Embiid misses half a season due to a shoulder injury, for example, the Sixers cannot waive him. Second, it does not apply to this coming NBA season, his last on his rookie scale deal, or next season, the first of the extension. The Sixers can, and likely will, be cautious with Embiid this season and he may not play much more than 50 games, even if he is healthy. They have a couple of seasons to build him up.

Also, if Embiid plays 1,650 minutes in three consecutive seasons, the right to waive goes away.

In theory, Embiid could get a super-max deal of $176 million — the Derrick Rose rule — but he would need to be named NBA MVP or make First Team All-NBA this season to reach that. Those goals are highly unlikely.

This sounds like a good deal for both sides. Embiid gets a max contract — and gets to say he’s a max player, something that is a status symbol around the NBA. The Sixers get protections. However, they likely would not waive Embiid unless he suffered a catastrophic, career-ending kind of injury. He’s too good when he plays, too valuable, for Philly to give up on him. But if it gets there, the Sixers have options.

Wiggins signs $148 million deal, 5 years.

He's shown improvement every year. But is he a cornerstone of that franchise?

Yet they traded their former franchise player for him so they can't exactly let him walk away.

Not sure what the Wolves cap situation is but when it's time for Towns to get paid, luxury taxes could come to play for a smaller market team.

I still remember the second or third contract that the Wolves gave to KG. A sports economist said at the time that the team had no choice, because without him, the team might not be viable in that market.

Lakers sign Travis Wear. If they were gonna sign a scrub from summer league they might aswell have signed that guard that was making threes instead of him.

I think it was inevitable, most around the city consider him the “heart and soul” of the team the past few years now. Grit and Grind and the identity of that team all started with him.

Let's face it, in their relatively short history, they don't have a lot of big moments yet.

What other Grizzlies players have had their numbers retired?

How many all-NBA or all-stars have the franchise had in their history?

They've been pretty competitive over the years but they just haven't had enough players who've reached significant milestones.

If by "big moments" you mean championships, then I agree.

Randolph, Allen, Gasol (and eventually Conley)have done enough for the team not just ON the court but off it as well. They all played big roles in Memphis going from laughing stock to having a good 6-7 year stretch, while being one of the best defensive teams in the league.

To answer your questions, they haven't retired any numbers and Gasol/Randolph have been All Stars/All NBA Players on their team. Conley could've been another one, but considering the competition he has at PG, it's somewhat understandable why he's yet to be named to either.

Long story short, All 3 of them deserve to have their Jerseys retired by the Grizzlies.

It doesn't necessarily have to be championships.

Getting into the conference finals would be memorable too.

I think they may have made conference finals?

Cleveland is in advanced talks on a deal to send Richard Jefferson and Kay Felder to Atlanta, league sources tell The Vertical.

                            — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) October 13, 2017

Cleveland will Richard Jefferson, Kay Felder and cash to Atlanta, league sources tell ESPN. Deal is agreed in principle.

                            — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) October 13, 2017

Cleveland is sending Atlanta two future second-round picks in the deal, league sources tell ESPN.

                            — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) October 13, 2017

The Cavaliers get out of having to pay a guaranteed player not to play (Jefferson was owed $2.5 million), which saves them both money and tax. I wonder how LeBron James takes this, he and Jefferson are tight.

The Hawks will eat the salaries and plan to waive both Jefferson (owed $2.5 million) and Felder ($455,000 guaranteed). They both become free agents. The real key here for the Hawks is they get a couple of second round picks for the trouble of taking on the salaries. The cash doesn’t hurt either.
