Nobody trusts Sacramento so I’m sure they’ll find a way to screw up any incremental progress they’ve made or will make over the years.



I depends on what YOU want the team to do. Do you want them to take their time and actually build a roster with young guys to develop over the years without having to break the bank on any of them for the next few years knowing that you’ll continue to suck for a few more years?

Or do you want to throw max money at guys like LaVine because you can’t risk losing a trade that’s already been lost but still hope to get a meeting with a FA of “any real impact” just for them to turn them down anyway?

You forget that we haven’t signed anyone of real impact since like 2012 and let guys go that we traded for previously so we were in the same position that you guys are in. That hasn’t stopped us from making progress these last 3 years, so if we can do it, then y’all damn sure can do it.

And yes, I’m fully aware you don’t have any faith in the FO, but I’m just saying there are ways to get better without having to give someone a max contract.

Yeah, the key here is y'all have had ownership and front office turnover in between this period of competence and trash. John Paxson has been on the job for 15 years now. 15. 15 years and one Eastern Conference Finals appearance, but verbal and physical altercations with players and coaches in EVERY single era/makeup of the team since he's been there. Every single promising team they've put together has ended with them choking out the coach, or fist fighting the coach, or getting into it with a player or career altering injuries. At this point playing the long game really does nothing for me for dudes who don't really have a clear plan for the future to sell anybody on why they need to be patient. Especially when they're already planning to be back in the playoffs next year. They're already trying to skip steps in this process which is a problem.

I look at them like I have EA Sports and the NBA Live franchise. GarPax are the real life NBA version of EA selling 3 year plans that they screw up or just flat out abandon for another 3 year plan in year 1 or 2 and just put you in an endless loop of 3 year plans that they never complete. Zach LaVine is 23 years old and has clear upside. THIS is exactly the player you want on a rebuilding team, particularly with Lauri there who looks like the guy they want to be the face of the team. Nobody is signing here, that has been made painfully obvious for the last two decades for this franchise dating all the way back to their embarrassing attempts at signing Tracy McGrady and Tim Duncan. So while I don't really like the idea of giving LaVine a max contract I also don't see the point of letting an asset walk out the door for nothing to preserve cap space just to waste on dudes like Lance Stephenson and Marcus Smart. That's not helping Lauri Markkanen. Been through that mess already watching Derrick Rose get dominated relying on Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer to be his help while his career passed him by. At this point, we've put all our eggs in the Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen, Kris Dunn basket, may as well go all in with those guys and let them grow together. I don't want to hear about wanting to preserve cap space next year for guys who have no intention of signing here.

Steve Mills was on ESPN NY today and said the Knicks will only offer one-year deals this summer and will remain focused on cap space for a max offer next summer.

Would have been nice if he took this approach last season..

Random thoughts, but do any of you think those teams like Boston, Philly, etc who might be tempted to see if Kawhi would stay might be hesitant in thinking that one small disagreement or sign of adversity might cause him to shut himself off from everyone and want to leave them as well?

Also, is it really true Kawhi was at a Dodgers game like a week after the playoffs in Magic’s section but couldn’t be with the Spurs at any point throughout the playoffs?

And also, under the assumption that most of this is the Spurs fault and Kawhi was threw under the bus. Could the fact that he is so quite and reserved have played a role in that. There is no past history of communication issues between the Spurs and their players. But in this case it seems like Pop maybe have been out of the loop, Tony, Manu, etc.. could a lack of communication from Kawhi’s side, which is usually a trait most like about him, effected this situation in a negative way?

If he is signaling that he intends to joining the Lakers next summer no matter what then if I'm Philly or Boston there is no way I trade for him even with intentions of "convincing him, pitching him for a year". Just too risky, even for a reduced package.

If I am Boston or Philly then I don’t make a trade now as the longer they wait the lower the price goes. Then when you factor in the possible 1 year rental and the injury I wouldn’t trade brown and draft picks or roco / saric plus whatever else. I don’t see why the spurs would make a trade to the lakers when that also guarantees they get another star.

I just don't get this "Don't trade to the Lakers cause they'll get better!!!" argument that seems to be floating around.

That just sounds like you are playing not to lose instead of winning. If LA can provide you with the best pieces to improve now and into the future, why the hell would you not do that? "Because the Lakers will get LeBron" is just terrible reasoning. You do what you do to get better. Period.

It reminds me of this last time I was playing Monopoly. Lol...I had one monopoly already and had three railroads. My mom had random other pieces and the one railroad I needed. I asked to trade her the orange piece I had that would have given her her only monopoly and for her to give me the last railroad. She was adamant about saying no because "Then you would have all the railroads!" And I'm sitting there telling her you're not going to win with no monopolies playing with a bunch of random properties. But she REFUSED and would not give it up all because she was worried about ME getting better.

Moral of the story...you play to win...
