    "Individuals are overrated"

Wow . . . honestly, truer words have never been spoken.

    I agree 100%.

More than likely people just associate star players as being with their teams. "How are the Lakers doing?" Becomes "How is Kobe doing?" That's why the ordinary NBA fan nowadays doesn't root for teams, rather than their favorite players.
but its hard to root for a team wen they have different players every year, and sometimes even change their playin styles from year to year

It's also the nature of the game, an individual can have an impact on an game, be it good or bad, much more than say hockey or football. Pretty much any above average player can score 30 points a night as long as they jack up 40 shots a game and don't need help from their teammates to do it. Whether that helps or hurts your team is secondary in alot of people's minds, even some coaches who beleive thier best player should get the ball in crunch time regardless of who's open. Combine that with players coming up with very little or no college experience and shoe deals staring them in the face and it's hard to resist trying to do everything yourself.

Case in point. The Laker-Heat game last week. A few seconds left in regulation of a tied game and Wade is just standing there dribbling waiting for the clock to wind down and takes a contested 20 footer that misses. It was a low percentage shot and he had plenty of time to move it around to try to get someone an open look but had he made it he would have been celebrated as a hero when in actuality it was a stupid decision to just shoot and ignore everyone else on the floor. I doubt Van Gundy said 2 words to him about it.

Then how can you be a fan of a team? Changes happen, if you're a true fan, you stick with them through the glory days and the gory days. Its alright to be a fan of a player, but for me, not having that "connection" with a team you really like would be missing out on what team-sports is all about.

Put yourself in there shoes. You're 20 something and probably coddled all through high school and college. What's more attractive, averaging 17 Pts a game for a title contender and part of a team or being "the man" and 25 pts a game and all the endorsements that come with it even though your team is .500. A big reason that TMac left the Raptors was because he wanted to be "the man" and not play second fiddle to Carter even though the Raptors were building a great foundation for championship contention. Tmac didn't want to be Pippen to Carter's Jordan back then although it would of ended up Tmac would have been "the man " in Toronto in hindsight.

The reason we talk about individuals so much is that this is the NBA's marketing strategy. The NBA is drastically different from the MLB, and the NFL is a mix between the NBA and MLB. The NBA markets players as its selling point of the league. The MLB markets teams as its selling point, and the NFL does a mix of both.
