None of that is wrong. I’ve long been of the belief that he should just forget about the 3 point shooting. There’s too much broken in his shooting mechanics at this point for me to believe he’ll ever get it right. For me the main things I would like to see him improve on are:
1. Reading defenses quicker. There’s so many instances where he gets the ball and then just freezes and lets the defense set up their wall and he’s now lost an opportunity at an open driving lane. Likewise when he gets doubled in the post. He’s just generally slow to read what’s happening and missed on the windows of opportunity that those defensive strategies create.
2. Controlled chaos. He’s so good getting downhill and twisting defenders around on his drives but he really struggles to probe the defense on his drives. With his ability to get to the rim and draw help defenders he should be able to dump passes off underneath for easy buckets or simply go to one of those fade-away runner type shots that would be unblockable for him and be a good counter to all the charge attempts.
3. Playing without the ball in his hands. Kinda goes hand in hand with his struggles reading defenses but he should be a devastating cutter and lob threat and he just isn’t. He’s also legitimately terrible setting screens.
4. Free throws. His form is horrendous at the FT line too but in my experience it’s a lot easier to break bad habits on free throws than it is for jumpers. If he can get back to being a 75% shooter and do it consistently, it totally changes the math and makes it a lot harder to have your defensive strategy built around fouling Giannis or trying to draw charges like so many teams do now.
