2x DPOY playing the best defense of his career yet this year

I don't expect him to win the award this year, but he absolutely should

            So, Raptors are tanking.

Slowly and slowly getting closer to a top 5 pick. Even better if they win the lottery.

Clippers aren't a deep team and are down 2 starters (Ibaka and Pat Bev) so I guess we shouldn't be too surprised, especially given how well the Hawks have been playing lately.

Just looked at Lou Williams' numbers and they are down big time. Is he washed now? Averaged 18-22 PPG the last 4 seasons and only 12 PPG this year.

He’s not been all that great the past few years everyone has been hyping him up either. He just had free reign to come in and quickly put up as many shots as he wanted like J Crawford did. He’s a solid volume guy, but in reality so is half the rest of the league if that’s the type of freedom they have. He’s actually shooting as well this year as he has the past two, but less touches, shots, free throws, minutes, etc.

Disagree. Lou was a pretty phenomenal scorer off the bench. Not 'like the rest of the league'. He might be slowing down.

He was good in that role and has the ability to create space and shots of the dribble that some guys don't but lots of bigger guys don't necessarily need that ability either. Me saying "half the rest of the league" might have been an exaggeration, but there aren't many regular rotation minute level guys who can't get you close to 20 a night if they are taking 15-16 shots like that. I more so meant that his game is purely predicated on volume, if his volume drops the output isn't going to be that great.

Thing is if Lou was your 6th men he would carry your bench offensively and be the offense by himself basically. Not that many guys like that in the league. Clarkson might be that type of off the bench instant offense.

He can, but what happens when he isn't? He's not an efficient enough scorer to continue chucking up shots when he doesn't get "hot" and he's not a good enough playmaker or defender to provide much else outside of shot volume when he's on the floor. Part of the problem with Lou and Jamal is with those 6th man of the year type of systems they played in under Doc their role was to be the scoring punch on the bench AND the back up point guard simultaneously. Which means they were coming in throwing up shots while also not moving the ball or playing defense. It works if they get "hot" but it's pretty much the reverse effect when they aren't because it hurts both ends of the floor, and when they are the only ones touching the ball they are dictating the pace, basically asking your 5th or 6th best player to go play hero ball.

They are 5 points worse with him on the floor this year, they were 6 points worse last year. The year before they were better with him on the floor but he was also the only real shot creator on that team. I think there is a fine line to tiptoe with letting a streaky guy like that get up shots or asking him to blend into the team more. The issue with Lou is he doesn't do anything well enough to blend into the team. JR Smith could have jacked up 15 shots a night and scored 20 a game for the Cavs a few years back, but there would have been no real benefit to taking the ball away from Bron, Kyrie, Love for inefficient chucking like that from JR. He was able to play defense, spot up, and wait to get his looks if he got hot. Lou can't really do that because he can't play defense and rarely is he paired next to another playmaker so he just has the ball.

I think that offense is fine when a team truly needs it, that's why everyone overlooks some of these seasons where Westbrook, Kobe, AI spent entire 82 games throwing up awful shots, they had to.. But on a balanced team the value of that type of scoring drops big time. With PG, Kawhi, Morris, Ibaka, Trez, etc those guys standing around watching Lou iso just doesn't move the needle a ton for me. Sure he's going to have moments in some games where he can carry the offense for a bit, but then the playoffs roll around and he can't defend, or play off ball, isn't getting to the line as easily, and isn't big enough to generate easy clean looks..

I think Utah is actually close to letting Clarkson have a bit too much free reign like that. I think the biggest difference for them is he's almost always on the floor with one of Conley, Mitchell, Ingles, so he's not constantly in that role of trying to get 20 points in 25 minutes off the bench while also having the ball always be in his hands so the team has no playmaking. I think he also doesn't make their defense dip as much as Lou does.

I was strictly talking about the offensive side of the floor. I think his lack of defense is well documented. With thoses guys that are all offense and no D once their offense starts dropping it doesn't make up for their atrocious defense anymore. Like Melo once his efficiency dropped he was a net negative on the floor.

Good post anyway I agree with most of it.
