It’s tough because of the way he plays vs how a PG plays in a traditional sense. I know he technically starts at the “point guard” spot but how do you even begin to compare his game vs Magic or even guys like Kidd, Nash, Stockton, it’s just difficult. And if you start down that path what if someone wants to call LeBron a PG? Or guys like Oscar, West, D-Wade, Harden, etc.
I don’t always know what quantifies the term “greatest” as Curry is going to keep building on an already great career. But I do consider Magic a “better” more impactful all around basketball player at his peak than Curry at his. So for me it’s going to take his career overall surpassing Magic’s by a big jump to surpass him.
I know Magic’s career wasn’t the longest so he didn’t rack up tons of those “counting” type of stats and awards. What he did in the limited time was crazy though. The 3 MVPs, 9 trips to the finals, 5 rings, any given game he could lead the team with scoring, playmaking, rebounding, crazy.
Steph’s great, and as far as just listing off point guards I’m sure he’s got an argument from a lot of folks. But just as a player in general I think Magic has some top 5 ever level arguments. I don’t put Curry up there. And no matter how much longer he plays, what he achieves, I’m not sure we will see “better” ball from him, so I don’t know that he’ll ever quite make that type of placing in my opinion.
I know a lot of people don’t like this argument (because a lot of people underrate the **** out of him) but Steph to me as a player mostly compares to Steve Nash out of anybody I ever watched. I know they approach the game vastly different, Steph with his ability to create and get off the shots he does to make him an All-Time level scorer, Nash with his vision, passing, creativity making him one of the best passers ever..
But I think they play similar type of a role stemming from a different set of skills. You couldn’t replace Steph with anybody who has ever played and that GS team likely reach the same levels they did, I think Nash is much the same. Steph one of the best offensive players in the league because of mostly shooting and how that opens up things for his team, Nash the same because of his passing abilities and how that built up his guys as well.
On the surface I know Nash has no rings and all that. I know scoring is going to be the sticking point for most that won’t even entertain Nash being near that level of a player. But Nash was also an elite shooter in his own right who just used that shooting ability to create different types of scoring opportunities than the way Steph does. 50/40/90 averages over a 6 year span 2004-2010, and with scoring+assists Nash has accounted for over 40k career points, Curry is about to hit 30k sometime next season.
And like I said I know Steph is going to keep climbing, but after this year he’s already played the same number of season as Magic. Currently Magic sits 5th all time in MVP shares to Curry 24th, 14th in VORP vs 30th, 3rd in BPM vs 11th, 24th in WS vs 62nd, 6th in ORtg vs 25th, 15th vs 16th in PER and PER doesn’t even properly reward playmakers, and I believe just a substantially better playoff performer overall. 5 rings or 0 rings Steph currently sits in that Harden, KG, Malone group of regular season vs post season drop in play.. I know injuries have played a bit of a role in that as well. But we aren’t playing the “if he stayed healthy” game with stuff like this either.
