Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
I’m talking about when the Basketball Team didn’t win FIBAS(FIBA!!)and people(as usual)were talking that “The rest of the world has caught up” mess as if we didn’t already know that. Folks had all types of takes lol
We never gave a damn about that, it was and always has been the Gold Medal and as long as they continue winning those like have since 08, we’re never going to care about winning the World Cup lol#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
Which is weird in a way, not just for American players but other countries as well. Players seem to "care" more about the Olympics, but in terms of competition it would seem the World Cup is the more prestigious tournament. There are more teams so likely more "bad" teams, but because of the way qualifying works you can have top 5 teams in the world not even be participating in the Olympics. In a way the World Cup likely would be a better measurement of who the best team in the world is, but players would rather compete in the Olympics.
Right now all of Spain, Slovenia, Argentina, Lithuania, Greece, and Italy were ranked in the top 10 in the World before FIBA and are not currently qualified for the Olympics. Only 4 more teams total can get in at this point and I'm not sure if they can all come from the same region or not because I don't know the rules that well and how those qualifying tournaments are constructed Argentina is out of contention already, and they were the 4th ranked team in the World. Spain was number 1 and there is a chance they miss, a chance we don't get one of Luka or Giannis, etc.
Not sure if we'll ever see a full on Soccer-like shift in that regard where the World Cup is considered THE tournament, but I do believe at some point the World Cup will likely gain more popularity than it currently has. Part of this is likely that fans, and I'm saying this because I'm an example myself, just aren't all that invested in it.. But I think that interest would rise if interest from the league, players, etc were to rise as well. Would be sick if we could just dominate both, but getting the Gold feels like a higher honor for whatever reason. Olympics have such a rich history.Comment

Both are really good at just giving guys an open platform to speak without it making it seem like they have to hold back, or be scripted, or act a certain way for the audience or the people interviewing them.Comment

1. Other countries care way more about it than we do. I mean there’s a reason why “Country Pride” is a big deal outside of the states(among other reasons).
2. When people hear “World Cup” they’re ALWAYS going to think of Soccer and for good reason.
3. Players/Sponsors care more about the Olympics because $$$. Nike goes ALL IN for the Olympics and not for FIBA despite that being an International Competition as well. Difference is there’s not much Financial Incentive there.
4. Gain more popularity in the states or outside? Outside, it’s already huge and has been for years but in the States, it’s never going to become “Must See TV” like the Olympics are/have been, especially when you consider how often it comes on(every year)and when it comes on as well(or at least when America plays. Who they also send will be a factor as well because unless you’re a die hard hoops head, you’re not gonna be scheduling time to watch G-Leaguers hoop in it like they already do).
You mentioned Players going more would help but we already see how they’re(speaking on the top dogs like Bron, Steph, KD, etc)not interested in making a multi summer commitment like they used to back in the day. Now whether the next crop will be different is TBD but I also understand why they wouldn’t care to do it nor will I knock them.
I guess ultimately I don’t get why any American would care about them not winning the Basketball version of the World Cup other than to say “Yeahh USA dominates Basketball at the International Level!” Like yeah, no **** lol, I didn’t need to see them win this competition to confirm that. You see other countries aren’t losing any sleep when they don’t win Gold Medals in Soccer at the Olympics(How we treat FIBA is how they treat the Olympics). But they are when they don’t win Euros or World Cup, lol.#RespectTheCultureComment

Football (soccer) olympics are for under 23 players only with 3 dispensation players.
Its still pretty big.
Lots of vets are willing to become 1 of the 3 chosen players.
Especially if they have never won it in their youth.
Its still taken very seriously and its very exciting because its a youth competition so anyone can win.
Its nowhere close to the same situation as the US and their FIBA shenanigans.

Re: NBA Off Topic Thread
First time I've seen someone actually request a trade on Twitter lol. With the offseason he had so far, this doesn't seem surprising
But it also comes with a $150K fine for publicly requesting a tradeAttached FilesLast edited by illwill10; 10-09-2023, 03:59 PM.Comment
