The Mavs had major concerns about moving forward with Luka Doncic due to his constant conditioning issues and the looming commitment of another supermax contract extension this summer, sources told ESPN.

I’m shocked a player as good and young as Luka got one pick.. like I know AD is good, but that’s just unheard of.

Dallas has to really believe this puts them over the top. But feels like they could be a Kyrie (or AD) injury away from this going south. When AD is on he’s the best two way player in the game, but running offense through him is ugly. Lakers haven’t been able to do it and make it function with 3 different coaches now. Ball stalls, that playstyle is dead and gone. You can’t just force feed a big and expect modern offensive output.

In all fairness though, Dallas plays well without Luka already and his on/off splits have never been massive. So who knows.

How can the NBA fix the ratings issue?

You know what, forget it. Let's just push the Lakers even more.

I don't think I've ever been this surprised by a player being traded in the NBA as much as this. And the Lakers get him and all it really cost was AD and a 1st?!

This has to be up there with "even Gretzky was traded" in terms of NBA comparables right? Unlike other superstar deals in NBA history, those ones were sign and trades or guys wanting to be moved. This was completely out of left field.

The fit in the short term feels so bad though. Luka, Bron, Reaves..

Feel like Bron is out or they’re giving up on Reaves being “untouchable” to do some more shuffling.

Apparently Mavs contacted the Lakers, Bron was unaware and found out at dinner after the Knicks game, AD feels cool with it. Just so random

After some of the shock has wore off, I kind of get it from Dallas' perspective. They made the determination that Luka-ball is not championship winning basketball. Whether you agree with that conclusion or not, I think it is undoubtedly the right call to trade him once you reach that determination.

Is the return lower than what we all would expect? Absolutely, BUT I do think Dallas is thinking "win now."
A good pairing with Kyrie had to factor into judging the return and I have always loved a perimeter guard paired with an athletic big.

Could Dallas have gotten a higher return by dealing with another team? I think so, but that higher return would likely have been in the form of draft picks. With a impatient star like Kyrie on the roster I can only conclude that Dallas felt a soft rebuild was less desirable than getting an all NBA caliber player in return. I enjoy clowning AD as much as the next guy, but is there a better talent that was obtainable for Dallas?

Its the ultimate high risk high reward trade.
