But you're also telling us Giannis should win because of record and telling people that record doesn't matter for ROY. Which I get, I don't think it's on a rookie to transform a bad team into a good one, they can't really control that. But Joker can't control that he had to play without Murray and Porter all year either. But it's also not like Cade was so much better than Barnes that he was on some Duncan or Luka level as a rookie, and even though I don't really hold record against him I could see people at least expecting him to get them higher than 3rd worst in the league.

I think the awards are completely different by the way. Kobe won the award over CP3 because he won one game towards the end. LeBron won the award over Carmelo because he avg what only 3 at that time had average for rookies 20-5-5 (I think Tyreke Evans did the same thing a few years later). That Kings team sucked. MVP is a toss up. I favor giving it to winners I guess. It just seems rules have changed.

When you talk hoops with your boys in person, are any of y’all talking about some VORP or RAPTOR or LEBRON or Advanced +/- while acting like their the smartest person in your crew?

There’s too many of em out here and there’s too many of em whose word we treat like gospel and put on a pedestal.

You talk hoops with one of them and this is how the convo goes(in person BTW):

You: Man, this year’s MVP race is a good one, you can’t go wrong with any of em
Nerd 1: Well actually you can and if it’s anyone but (insert player)you’re picking the wrong one and I’ll tell you why(Proceeds to mention 20 different advanced stats and it starts sounding like you’re back in Calc 101 again)

And now y’all done went from talking hoops to sounding like you’re at MIT listening to Daryl Morey and Sam Hinkie

Online, it’s even worse because then they start acting all pretentious, holier than thou, like they’re the smartest MFer in the room. And we know what they look like too because they all look/act the same.

They’ll be the ones that say **** like “If Ja Morant plays 5 few minutes and take 2 less shots and gives those shots to one of his teammates instead, he’ll have his full value maximized and will increase the Grizzlies win % by .03%!”

Once they let Russ win MVP, they had no choice but to start letting em in.

Now is this a product of me just getting old? 100% yes.

Is there a real way to avoid them and still get news/info about my team? Not really unless you wanna say “Stay off the Internet”, which…good luck with that in 2022.

I think so. I won't be disappointed. But it's the way I'm going to feel about the ROY award. I think Giannis should win because of his team record. Best player on the best team. It's just my personal opinion. I know the vote is spread out now. But I don't agree with the Media change to this advanced stats thing. Seems everyone wants to quantify things into numbers. But if you've ever played basketball in a team environment. It's much more than numbers.

From what I've seen around. It looks like Jokic is going back to back.

No. I get the aversion to advanced metrics to an extent. But it also shouldn't be a team accomplishment award.

Agree... I'm a little more open for the MVP. Even though I land on Giannis I flip flop still. But the key for me is the best team. That's just my way of a tie breaker between the 3 players.

As someone who posts these stats at times where I feel they are worth referencing I will say I've never once used any of those stats to try to sound like the smartest person in the room or any of that other stuff you've said along those lines.. Hell they aren't my stats, I'm not the one coming up with them lol so I feel no smarter mentioning them than I do any other stat.. I use them for the same reason I use any other stat-line from bball ref or ESPN or wherever, because they available to be used and relatively easy to find.

If I had the time to watch all 82 games for all 30 teams, dissect every play to see how and why a player did what he did, I probably would feel a bit less inclined to use them quite as much.. But yeah if I'm trying to split hairs and shuffle through the grey area of players that maybe I've watched 20 games of then I'll use every thing at my disposal to draw more to compare with. Every player looks great in the highlight reels or when watching condensed versions of games.

The advanced stats people sucked a lot of the fun out of baseball for me years ago. When WAR became the be-all-end-all agreed upon metric, with zero room for opposing debate, I was out.

I'm not sure they'll be able to do that with basketball tho. Personalities and team dynamics still reign supreme over TheRinger deep dives and essays seeking to convince people of x y or z.

A lot of the advanced stat conversation reminds me the crypto bro vibe. If you say something with enough confidence people will actually buy into it. Probability models and limited sample size algorithms sound and look impressive, but I frequently question their usefulness.

People who are legit fascinated by all these stats and analytics, and find fun in them, I get. But when it goes beyond that, to, "this proves my point, here's back up for my argument," etc, it's really taking the fun out of what is supposed to be entertainment.

I will say, on the topic of team record, it does feel odd that the supposed front runner for MVP is on a team that's 16 games behind the West leaders. They didn't even with their division.

The last year LeBron was in Cleveland he had an incredible season, but the team was a 4th seed and people were like hell no to the idea of him being MVP lol.
