Pack is 100% right in that my beef is that the criticism lacks any context or nuance. Its been just a blanket WB is trash line.

It’s possible to criticize a player and apply context/nuance to those criticisms. Like both of those can be done

The issue is most people don’t want to do the latter(It’s a big reason why most Basketball Discourse is garbage)and they pick and choose when to do that.

GG - Pack and I were pretty much saying the same thing you are all last season. Might have been the only two still backing him in that sense.. So it’s not that I don’t agree with your point overall, but just saying “he’s doing the things you want him to do” or “they already knew his strengths and weaknesses” eliminates all the grey area of the situation now.

They wanted him to come in and adjust his game, he supposedly told them as much, but some areas he just hasn’t done that. At no point did he buckle down and become a half-court defensive player. He tried to play his same gamble for steals play he always has. Which is fine on teams that want him to be that, to get him in transition because he IS their offense. But the Lakers didn’t want him to do that, and he couldn’t/wouldn’t adjust. That in turn made the Frank’s two big roatation unplayable, and made the best shooter they added to the roster (Ellington) unplayable because you can’t have two perimeter defenders that can’t guard anybody and constantly leave immobile bigs on an island defensively. Sure a chunk of that is poor roster construction, but what he provided was a big reason it was as poor as it was because of things like that.

Could type more on that, but his offensive limitations don’t need to be re-hashed. But basically yes they knew what his weaknesses were, but expecting him to provide no positives to balance that out to a degree wasn’t something that was a given until it played out that way. A few hustle plays from high motor is what you need from your 13th man, not your 2nd/3rd best/most dynamic player.

As far as the layup stuff.. he boosted that later in the year getting free runs to the rim late in games that were over. Same as Bron getting some extra points in those moments too.There was a stat that came out around the halfway point of the season and he was a good 10% lower than where he ended. Loss in athleticism didn’t hit him gradually. He was missing shots at the rim thinking he was high enough to dunk when he wasn’t. Reports coming out that Lakers management thought something was wrong with his eyes or hands for how bizarre it actually was. That and routinely stepping into his bread and butter (or was) left wing pull-up that he was literally throwing off the shot clock.

Whatever his known weaknesses were before that trade, that degree of bad was certainly not expected. I still believe it’s all mental in that sense, and I hate that for him, but there is just no other way to explain it. He’s never been a good shooter, we know that, but he’s never just been a walking airball still getting to the spot he wants and shot he wants like last season. Teams started treating him like Ben Simmons.

Watch Lebron and KD still throw down on their dunks never gets old or tiring.

Nets may need to add another big too because rolling with just Claxton/Sharpe is too risky and I also don’t care to see Ben playing the 5 in long spurts either.
