Celtics News(7-5-16): http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16...nds-knee-debut (Please keep this kid healthy Lord!)

Al Horford's arrival adds the sort of impact talent that the team believes will help Boston take the next step toward becoming a legitimate contender.

The Celtics were unable to land Kevin Durant, but they do have cap flexibility and a nucleus that should make them a contender for years to come.

    Per ESPN Writer Chris Forsberg:

Celtics 102, 76ers 94: Boston's 2015 draft class led the way as Terry Rozier (18 points) and R.J. Hunter (17 points) propelled the Celtics to a win in their summer-league opener in Utah. Philadelphia rookie Ben Simmons posted 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists but departed early due to cramping.
http://www.masslive.com/celtics/inde...advantage.html (This would probably mean also that IT would have to go, no way we keep two All-Star type PG's on the same roster, I would rather stick with IT myself)

Presented by SALT LAKE CITY – Terry Rozier put an exclamation point on Boston’s 102-94 win over the Sixers Monday night by slamming home a monstrou...

Las Vegas Summer League is the first chance for lottery picks to validate their worth and for late-round prospects to silence their critics.

With Al Horford filling a big frontcourt role, Jared Sullinger's time in Boston appears to be over.

        From ESPN Writer Chris Forsberg:

Celtics holding press conference Friday for "major team announcement." Remember, teams can't mention players by name until officially signed.

          Re: Official Boston Celtics Thread

Asked what he might seek for his team before finalizing roster construction, Ainge said: "We need more shooting. We have some guys who are versatile and can play center and 4 [power forward]. We can use a stronger center, and those are the two biggest things. Maybe another ball-handler as well."
Would love a big bodied center and a proven shooter added to the roster.

The Celtics drafted both Guerschon Yabusele (16th overall) and Ante Zizic (23) last month. Ainge said Zizic will remain overseas next season but that the team was still deciding on Yabusele, who is with the Celtics' summer squads in Utah and Las Vegas this month.
Surprised to see them undecided on Yabusele yet.

Watching 2014 draftee James Young compete in summer league, Ainge hinted it was time to see him make a leap forward, particularly with Boston flush with recent draftees after making 12 selections (including seven in the first round) over the past three drafts. "Listen, you have to earn a roster spot," Ainge said of the shooting guard. "There are some exceptions, like James Young is an exception. He was drafted at 18 years old, and we have to be patient with him, but now it’s time. But competition is a good thing. It brings out the best in these guys."
James Young has been put on notice.

It's only Summer League but Rozier has looked good. Beginning to think he could fill the void left by Turner's exit.

Obviously, I would love someone like Boogie, Vucevic or Noel (although I guess he's long more than big bodied) on this team. I just don't know if that's going to happened and if it does at what cost?

It's been rumored that the Suns may buyout Tyson Chandler and the T'Wolves may waive Nikola Pekovic. I wouldn't mind taking a flyer one of them and hoping that they can turn it around. Especially, since another team would be paying the the bulk of the salary. I wouldn't want either on a long term deal though.

Surprised to see them undecided on Yabusele yet.

I'm hoping he makes it if nothing more than garbage time minutes. Anything to keep him under staying Brad's tutelage for the year is a win for me.

James Young has been put on notice.

Man, I just can't believe that James can do so well in Summer League, but can't get it together for the big show. He's still young and still has time to turns things around, however if he can't show something more soon than I don't know if that opportunity is going to come with the C's.

Yeah, I've been hard on him this offseason, but he's impressed me so far in Utah. Like you said it's just Summer League, but I'm hoping Smart and Rozier can both step up to fill the void left by ET.

Do we not have at least 5 capable shooters on our current roster? IT, Bradley, Hunter, Young, & Rozier? I mean only IT & Bradley are the proven ones in the NBA but Hunter was a long range bomber coming out of college. Young was a decent shooter coming out of college. You could even throw in big men Jerebko & Olynyk as shooters. They too can hit the long ball with a decent %.

Rozier while not a consistent 3pt. shooter he can hit 3's & has a solid mid range game. I don't see the real problem with us having shooters. Ainge is saying this & if he would have drafted Buddy Hield or Jamal Murray then that wouldn't need to be said at all.

I think we have enough shooters. I mean 5 guys that can shoot. That's enough. Evan Turner wasn't a shooter so even with him leaving the team there's still 5 capable shooters so I don't see the big deal myself.

Surprised to see them undecided on Yabusele yet.

I'm not surprised at all. I said he was more than likely a 50%-50% chance of making the roster. He's the best Euro player we drafted. I don't think he's personally ready for the NBA but he's the closest of all the Euro players we got. He's got enough skills to make the roster I believe but I think it comes down now to whether Ainge makes anymore deals or not.

James Young has been put on notice.

He should be because he's not done much of anything since being drafted. The good thing with Young is that he's still young(no pun intended ) & still has plenty of time to develop. I don't think we should give up on him yet.

I say give him at least another season. Maybe even two more seasons because of his young age. Some players just don't develop until a little later than others.

I agree. Rozier has been our leader so far in the Summer League. What about that 4pt. play to beat the Spurs? We're now 3-0 because of him. He's stepped up & not only been our scoring leader but floor leader as well.

                      Re: Official Boston Celtics Thread

Ok guys. Here's our current roster with the limit of course being over 15 right now: http://espn.go.com/nba/team/roster/_/name/bos

Here are the 13 players as of right now that I would have on our roster:

                      Avery Bradley
                      Jaylen Brown
                      Jae Crowder
                      Al Horford
                      R.J. Hunter
                      Jonas Jerebko
                      Amir Johnson
                      Jordan Mickey
                      Kelly Olynyk
                      Terry Rozier
                      Marcus Smart
                      Isaiah Thomas
                      James Young

The roster officially has 8 other players listed. That's 21 total players. They still have Sully & Zeller listed. There's still a possibility that we sign Sully but probably not Zeller. I'm going to go ahead & add Sully to the roster to make 14 players. That leaves one player to get to the 15 player limit.

I'm going to predict that our 16th pick in the 2016 draft in Guerschon Yabusele will be that 15th player to make the roster but will either play in the D-League or in Europe. That's unless Ainge pulls off a trade or something else to change the roster. Ainge has already announced Zizic will be going to Europe.

I think the leftover players will be playing in the NBA D-League. Players like Bentil, Holland, Demetrius Jackson,& Abdel Nader. There's a chance that Bentil can make the 12-man roster. I think that only happens if we don't resign Sully.

If we resign Sully then Bentil is just headed for the D-League I'm afraid even though of all the draft picks I think he's the most NBA ready player. Even more ready than Jaylen Brown.

When I looked at the 16-17 salaries for the players that are signed I almost barfed when I saw IT's salary. I mean he's getting paid chump change($6,587,132) for what has become a star player. I know he signed that deal while with the Suns but we've got to lock him down for bigger bucks & longer term this coming season.

Thomas will make about the same money in the 17-18 season. That's a disgrace. Ainge has got to pay him because he's getting cheated bigtime for what he provides on the court. He should be making at least $12 million per. That would be nearly double what he's getting paid now.

I say we lock him down for another 3 more years & $36-$42 million extension. That means we would have him for 5 more years guaranteed. He should do what a football player does & holdout if I was him! LOL!

Kidding a little there but I mean he's the most underpaid PG in the league now I would believe. Of course, we could wait until after the 16-17 season so IT can get a part of that CAP money that we will have available & get paid even more.

He's a star now & deserves star money. Not penny pocket change! He's too nice of a guy though probably to say much about the way he feels about his contract. I would be boiling inside. GO CELTICS!

                        From ESPN's Chris Forsberg:

The Boston Celtics rescinded their qualifying offer to Jared Sullinger last week and renounced his rights in order to clear the necessary cap space to sign Al Horford to a max contract. This makes it unlikely that Sullinger returns (unless the Celtics eventually go over the cap and he's willing to play at the midlevel exception, which is only slightly more money than his original qualifying offer). The Celtics got four good seasons out of Sullinger, who slid to No. 21 in the 2012 draft. The addition of Horford and having drafted a pair of first-round big men last month — even if they are ultimately stashed — made it unlikely the Celtics would commit long term to Sullinger.

                          http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celti...ll-benefit-him

Chris Forsberg From ESPN(thru Brad Stevens):

Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens on the team electing not to bring back Jared Sullinger: "I think Jared's a really good player and I think Jared will continue to be a really good player. Obviously when we got Al, that made us make hard decisions. And the thing that stinks about that is having to move on and move forward, both for him and us. But he'll do great. Jared's one of the more talented guys being able to get the ball off the glass, and he's got beautiful touch and he's a good guy, and so I think he'll do well. I'm hopeful this move will benefit him as well, and I think it will. We'll see where he lands, but I know there's a lot of interest in him based on how my phone's been ringing and everybody else's, so I'm sure he'll land where he wants to and do exceptionally well."
Chris Forsberg From ESPN(thru Brad Stevens) on Evan Turner:

Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens on Evan Turner's big payday with the Trail Blazers: "There's a small part of you certainly that's sad to see guys go and sad to see guys that have been a part of this not be a part of it anymore. But I mean, c'mon. When I saw that and came across the deal, I was so happy for him. Knowing where he was two years ago and knowing he had come to Boston on the belief that this would be a good thing for his career -- that makes you feel good."

Sully is officially gone now: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16...oronto-raptors

This means we might bring back Zeller. His qualifying offer($3,695,169) wasn't too high & while I think at least a couple teams will go over that amount there's a chance they won't either.

I don't see many teams paying him $4 million+. They didn't get to see enough out of him last season because we never utilized him enough.

I would liked to have him back but I bet he wants to play somewhere else because the C's didn't give him half the chance last season. One offer over $4 million & he's gone! I say he gets that too but I'm not sure which team.

Horford has played center his entire career and Blake has played power forward and they have two different skill sets, so they could play together. I mean, if Blake can play with DeAndre Jordan he could easily play with Horford. I have read that Horford wants to play PF though, but I don't think I've ever heard that for Al's own mouth.

With that said, I don't want to trade for Blake. He's in the last year of his deal and if he wants to be in Boston, then sign him next offseason. That way we can keep Crowder and the Brooklyn picks. If he doesn't want to sign here as a FA, then he won't want to be here anyway and probably wouldn't resign, so nothing is lost.
