    Re: Toronto Raptors

From what i've heard BC will be in a corporate non basketball ops role. I'm guessing he'll be working in a larger context for MLSE kind of like what Tom Anselmi did when Richard Peddie was in charge.

Anyways, the reports of the Denver GM and former assistant to BC being the new GM doesn't exactly thrill me. THAT'S the big splash that Tim Liewekke (sp) talks about making?

Um, he's turned Denver into a legit contender without tanking and has made shrewd moves, what more do you want?

Yes, I know that I meant for the casual fan. I KNOW he's done well for Denver though it's not the big splash that's promised unless the Raps are gonna push hard for some big time free agents/trades.

Hey, i'm hoping this team does well in the future because despite what a good percent of people on these forums think, Toronto is a very good NBA market.

Bringing in the Exec of the year would probably sound nice to casuals, and I kinda doubt that this is what he meant by big splash.

Sounds like AA was GM from the moment JP was fired.

If we get Ujiri, any chance he might try and go after Iguodala(assuming he is a free agent this offseason, which he very well could be)? AI was a guy Ujiri really wanted(and got) in Denver, so he might want him in Toronto too?

After 4 years of their career, AI was better than DeRozan:

And is still doing real good. I wouldn't mind getting AI to replace DeRozan, then pulling off some big deal like DeRozan + JV(or Amir) for some big name/established C. That C plus Gay and AI would be huge for a starting lineup on Raptors.

There really isn't a single center I'd give JV + DD for, lol.

                He's a PF not a C, but what about Kevin Love(assuming he's healthy)?

Jerry Sloan could go back to coaching again. By sounds of it, he might only be interested in contenders though(don't know if that means championship contenders or playoff contenders), but don't know many NBA teams out there that are contenders that are in need of a coach...

Lakers/Nets are only 2 I can think of. And he obviously won't go to the Nets(and Lakers aren't even contenders anymore are they...)

Another dream name that'd be cool if Raptors got, but there's better chance of Raptors winning draft lottery on Tuesday than Sloan coaching them(even if we get Ujiri and he makes big moves)

The Wolves wouldn't do that and I don't understand why you aren't satisfied with Amir at PF.

I'm am satisfied with him, I'm just saying that if we can get better than what we have, and it won't cost much to do(meaning a FA signing and then a trade) then why not do it.

And of our starting 5, C/PF are probably the 2 weakest areas in that starting 5. Doesn't mean they're not good, just means that there's more room to improve there, than at SF,SG or PG.

Obviously our biggest priority is/should be the bench though. So at least fix up the bench first, and then if we manage to be playoff team, start looking for guys to push us even further up in the standings(regardless if those guys are starters or bench players)

As per Michael Grange, BC to stay on as team president. Will still have input on basketball decisions, take it for what it's worth. it doesn't sound to me like he is being pushed aside like Burke did. It also do doesn't sound to me like he's 100% out of the picture when it comes to basketball related stuff.....

                        Re: Toronto Raptors

Don't think anyone even expected this.

The part I didn't like in that article:
" Leiweke is conducting a search to identify candidates and expects to name the new GM in the next 30 days."

The draft is on June 27th, so hopefully it doesn't take almost 30 days to find a new GM, cause last thing we want is a GM heading into the draft, not really knowing what he wants to do with the Raptors yet.

And supposedly Raptors gonna offer Ujiri a 4 year deal worth about 9M(he's currently making 500k, so his salary would be more than 4 times his old amount)

Leiweke: "I'm doing the search; we're waiting for permission on some GM candidates; others we haven't asked for yet."

I believe we can't even talk to Ujiri until Wednesday, so that's prob who we're waiting on

Another thing that was interesting about the article:

"hinted at changes to the Raptors' brand, acknowledging "specific" conversations with the NBA about potential changes.

"We absolutely have had conversations about the color and the makeup of our brand, our uniforms and our image," he said. "To me, we should be all about the Canadian flag and Canada."

Could this mean they get rid of the Raptors name? Or change the logo to something else?

                          Maybe a combo of:

I like the idea you suggested, but count me in for a Huskies-esque throwback, always loved those unis. It's new ownership, a new GM, let's start fresh, screw the Raptors. Let's move away from that.

But he said it was gonna emphasize Canada/Maple Leaf though. Don't see how the huskies would do that.

Huskies does look cool for throwback(though it still looks like NCAA type jersey to me lol) but not as main team.

Don't know what name they could come up with for them.

The finalists back in 90s for the teams name were:
Beavers, Bobcats, Dragons, Grizzlies, Hogs, Raptors, Scorpions, T-Rex, Tarantulas, and Terriers

Bobcats,Grizzlies,Raptors obviously won't be used. None of the others really stand out as being a good name(Dragons is a cool one,but don't get how they can "Canadianize" it)
