Re: UFC trying to steal FNs thunder.
I wonder how much the sales will be affected by either.
For me, since I'm way more into boxing, I'll be getting FNRd4 and renting UFC.
Where the sales might get split is between the non-diehards on either side of the fence. They'll pick the one that's most fun. Or they could just buy both.
The one area where the UFC game might suffer is that those that want to just bang could get frustrated when fighting buddies who only want to ground-and-pound or submit.
That's where the simplicity of boxing might help FNRd4. More brawls and bloody wars can ensue with a boxing game. -

I'm normally a bigger boxing than UFC fan and the UFC game wasn't even om my radar untiul the demo came out but it has killed alot of the anticipation for FN4. The UFC graphics and animations are incredible but the FN4 videos I've seen still look weird and the fighters move awkwardly. Don't understand how THQ can get it perfect the 1st time around while FN in it's 4th try still have unrealistic boxer models and disjointed movements. The boxers still look wooden and it still looks like a video game while UFC looks stunningly life-like.
Just by the nature of the UFC game with more types of moves it should be more difficult for them to make it look realistic. THQ should try thier hand at boxing next.
If UFC has any type of half decent career mode then it will get most of my gaming time because online I can see it being much more fun than FN4 especially if FN4 doesn't allow you to eliminate the health meters online and off.Last edited by Seymour Scagnetti; 05-01-2009, 09:42 AM.Comment

Re: UFC trying to steal FNs thunder.
I must admit I'm not a huge UFC guy, but I find myself watching more and more. The demo is fun. I just know that I am not going to spend close to $300 dollars this summer on games. I planed on buying FN4, NCAA 10, Madden 10, TW10 all while trying to finish a franchise in MLB 09. Not enough time in the day. That is why UFC might lose me. Should any of those games dissapoint then there may be an opening for UFC to slip in there.Moderator

Re: UFC trying to steal FNs thunder.
Disagree, one guy wanting to fight on the ground while the other guy wants to brawl is tremendously fun. The ground fighter waiting for the brawler to commit himself and go for the takedown. The brawler can anticipate a takedown and deliver a knee to the ground fighter's head. Once they are on the ground it becomes very strategic in how to block and attempting to kick out at the right opportunity. A ground fighter versus a brawler is the most fun when playing head to head at least with this demo.

To me, that's where the divide is in real life.
I don't like MMA nearly as much because as soon as it goes to the mat, I fall asleep. I want to see guys trade. That's why I like the simplicity of boxing.
Also, there's far more opportunity to see a war in boxing than in UFC - where two guys trade bombs over and over again for 12 rounds displaying their heart and chin.
In the UFC 9 times out of 10, if someone's clocked on the button it's over. You would never see a war like Gatti-Ward, Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez, Cotto-Margarito or Holyfield-Bowe.
I'm not trying to knock MMA. I know how popular it is. But where someone might find extreme pleasure in watching someone reverse a rear-naked choke, or arm bar, I might as well watch paint dry. Those particular skills don't interest me.
And that's where the divide will take place in these games.
Some guys might love the strategy of takedowns, submissions or reversals. That's cool.
But then you're going to get other guys that will revel in the simplicity of boxing - hitting and not getting hit, countering, etc.
I actually believe that the UFC game will outsell FNRd4. MMA is a booming sport.
I just hope it's close so we can guarantee future FN releases. And I think once everyone gets their hands on it, they'll fall in love - even by people who care nothing about boxing.Comment

Re: UFC trying to steal FNs thunder.
UFC isn't trying...they did steal the thunder. All the community day crap, anti-Kudo talk, EA groupspeak, etc... has all been smoke and mirrors. FN 4, so far, has been nothing more than a huge disappointment. The only good news is my expectations are set so low that there is a solid chance I will be surprised.
UFC Undisputed has proven how easy it is to make an interesting game out of the gate. And I am not talking simply about the roster, but presentation, audio, bodies of fighters who are actually in proportion, etc...
This is the like the 8th version of Fight Night and we are still begging for things that UFC has implemented in their flagship title. Simply hilarious...Comment

I can understand if some people have been disappointed with some of the aesthetic media provided, but unless you've actually played the game and seen all the features this game cannot be labeled a disappointment yet.
Don't let your bitterness for lack of information cloud your feelings. I completely understand how everyone's getting anxious about more details, but just wait before you pass judgment.
Remember, before UFC drops, there's an excellent chance the FN demo will be out, more hands-on reviews will be available as well as full details on the career mode.
EA could be setting themselves up perfectly to steal all of the thunder away from UFC days before it's about to be released.Comment

thelwig, how in all honesty can you say it's been a huge disappointment? The game is 8 weeks from release and we haven't even seen a demo yet.

Bitterness? If I ever get bitter over a videogame...I will jump off a bridge.
There is PLENTY of pics and information of FN4 out there to reveal nothing more than a huge letdown. It can only surprise at this point. Roster, character models, lighting, graphics, etc... have all been MONSTER disappointments. Then, tack on this is the 8th (?) iteration of FN and UFC has implemented things FN still hasn't...it all adds up to a huge disappoinment. Once again, FN can only surprise. I hope it does.Comment

It's been said a number of times here that the game looks so much better in person and live.
And you have to remember that this game was rebuilt from the ground up with a new team.
It's not just another 'run of the mill' version.
FN's roster might be half of what UFC's is but it's not EA's fault they have to negotiate with each fighter individually.
And with the game face importer, there's no reason why you can't import all the past and present stars that you like.
I'm not trying to start a war here, but I don't understand how anyone can say a game is an absolute failure based on a handful of screenshots.
Regarding the 'information of FNRd4 out there' you stated, please bring up an example of something you read regarding the gameplay that indicates this game is going to be a huge letdown.Comment

So you're going to label this game a failure based on a few stills?

Roster? I have said my peace in this department. I could have a much better roster negotiated, signed, and cheaper than EA and still have time to eat dinner and watch the Bulls game.
Ground up? Nonsense. This is the 8th FN. End of story.
I am not going to go back and forth. I retired from message boards and came out out of stupidity.
I hope the game is good. But so far, it has been a disappoinment. And if it sucks, I will still have UFC.Comment

Although I have to reiterate again that even though this is the 8th title in the series it's the first one built for Next gen by this team.
And I think you'd be very interested to hear the EA team speak about how difficult it is to sign some of these fighters.
I was told that some guys are next to impossible to even get ahold of. And then there are some who think they're worth more than they are while some others want to have 100% control over how their fighter is rated.
I read that when RJJ was at the top of his game, his managers could barely get him on the phone let alone companies seeking his rights for merchandise or games.
I'd love it if every boxer was a member of a union so EA (or anyone else) could give a lump sum and have rights to every member ala the NFL, NHL or UFC.
Just wait until you get your hands on the demo. Then decide if you're disappointed. Cheers!Comment

Got to agree. I'm getting both but I'm way more pumped about UFC. So pumped that I'm taking off from work on release day. I'll be honest, there isnt much i've seen that has me excited about FN4 so far. The roster is pretty weak if you care more about current fighters. Mora? Vivian Harris? Cintron? Cory Spinks? Look at the Ring Mag top ten P4P...the game only has 2 of those 10 fighters.
The gameplay clips i've have been dissapointing too. I'm waiting for the demo but I cant say I'm that excited about it.Last edited by aholbert32; 05-01-2009, 02:16 PM.Comment
