Floyd Mayweather - Jim Rome Interview

Homeboy states that he's the greatest boxer ever, even over the GOAT Ali. His argument is that man lies, woman lies, but stats don't lie and Ali has lost compared to his unblemished record.

Rome was trying to talk to him about quality of opponents and PBF kept cutting him off.

I think this is hilarious. Discuss.

What an a$$. So Rocky Marciano (49-0), Joe Calzage (46-0), Mihai Leu (28-0), Pichit Sitbangprachan (24-0), Harry Simon (25-0), and Sven Ottke (34-0) are all Floyd's equals I guess.

Floyd stays winning. The fact that you guys are even discussing that ridiculous statement is why Floyd is a master at promoting a fight. Do you think he really thinks he's accomplished more than Ali? HE DOES THIS **** BEFORE EVERY FIGHT!!! He plays the bad guy and people pay to see him get beat. He wins the fight and he's humble after the fight.

For the record I won't be contributing to his proceeds Saturday night. I just like to talk bad about him.

First off: Greatest respect, but Ali wasn't the GOAT. That crown would go to Sugar Ray Robinson.

Second, Floyd is just talking sh*t for attention. He's not even in the conversation as the GOAT of the sweet science.

If you're Floyd why shouldn't you think you're the greatest? He hasn't lost, one can argue that boxers today are more skilled, faster, stronger and better conditioned than the Ali days. Dont get me wrong i'm not saying Floyd is the greatest of All time but as an athlete you should always think you're the best. Plus its really just Floyd keeping his name out there and promoting a fight. But if he beats Mosely and then Pacquiao, why shouldnt he think he's the best?

Ali said he was the greatest and he didnt get ripped for it but when Floyd does it he's ripped because people don't like him. Athletes are more scrutinized (sp?) these days than they were back then because we have 24/7 media and the internet allows everyone to state their opinion so people have become more opinionated about everything than they used to be and a lot of people have a hard time admitting that some of the athletes these days are better than some of the greats in the past when athletes have evolved a lot since the older days.

Re: Floyd Mayweather - Jim Rome Interview

Ali said he was the greatest because he proved he was, in the ring against his top rivals at their prime.

Run down the list: Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Lyle -- he beat them all in their prime. Floyd hasn't done that.

Plus there's a growing belief today in boxing that your status as an all-time legend is secured by having a zero on the right-hand side of your record. Mayweather and Calzaghe are living proof. Mayweather has avoided some tough bouts in recent years because he's obsessed with keeping the zero. Calzaghe probably retired too soon because of that.

I admire Mayweather for taking on Mosley, as this bout probably poses the greatest risk to his unblemished record since he fought Castillo twice in 2002.

Still, there's a common denominator among the names tossed around when discussing the greatest fighters of all time: They all lost at least once. Louis, Armstrong, Ali, B. Leonard, R. Leonard, Robinson, Pep, Duran, Dempsey -- they all lost.

Funny, but you never see the names Marciano, Calzaghe, Simon, Ottke or Mayweather mentioned on those all-time greats lists, yet they all have zeros on the right side of their records.

The thing about Ali is he was undisputedly the best of the best around him. Patterson, Liston, Norton, Frazier, Spinks, Foreman. He left no question marks. As good as Mayweather is, and the dude is pretty damn good, he still has a couple question marks on his record...one being Mosley, the other being Pacquiao. Should he beat those two, then I'd put him up there. But when you look at how Ali beat the top guys in his time vs. how Mayweather is beating the top guys in his time, there's no question who is the greatest boxer.

And as for the comment made about media today compared to back then. Ali was an WORLDWIDE icon in a time where there was no internet and no 24/7 access to media like we have today. Mayweather still has yet to reach that status.

As for him running his mouth, Mayweather is a punk and always will be a punk. You may think its for show, but before he became big, he was bullying people around my store back in Vegas. Thinking he was better than everyone. Psshh. I hope Mosley knocks his ******* down.

Actually, Ali was vilified when he came out talking that "greatest" talk. Ali was claiming to be the greatest before he even beat Sonny Liston.

Now I don't believe Floyd is the greatest, but from a put SKILL standpoint, he has the entire package. Ali was similar to Roy Jones in the sense he would keep his hands low. He even got floored by Henry Cooper while he was still in his prime. I don't believe Floyd has ever hit the canvas. The only thing he lacks is one punch KO power, but he does have a plethora of KOs over his career. Ali is the greatest to me, not only because of what he did in the ring, but what he was outside of it.

And Mayweather isn't fighting Marquez or Hatton. He's fighting a guy who's fast and stronger then him.

Just saw the video. The reason why Ali is the GOAT is because he would fight anyone. Unlike floyd who picks his fights. Ali would fight anyone who would call him out no matter who you were.

Stronger? Maybe. Not by much. Mosley a bigger puncher. But did you see the punches he hit marg with?. Had to be the slowest punches i ever seen.

Going to be an easy fight for floyd. Too fast. Shane is easy to hit. Floyd is too hard to hit. Shanes last big paycheck.

Yeah, but Shane isn't as fast as Floyd. And that's all that matters, especially when you factor in Floyd's defense and counterpunching ability.
