Re: OWC is perfect example how Micro-transactions is ruining gaming!

I'm 39 years old, a wife and 4 boys. Because I'm a stay at home dad, I actually get to put some gaming in around when they take a nap. Not always, but sometimes. I don't game as much as I would if I were single with no kids (wouldn't want that), but I made a decision a couple years ago to make sure I was having fun. If I'm not, I need to take a step back and do something else.

This is why OWC is so crazy to me this year. I'm actually enjoying the heck out of it. What I do is fight 3-4 fights, evaluate how much XP I earned and then apply it where I see fit. I'm having so much fun doing that. Now I'm sure a lot of the fun is because I can beat these one punch boosters. I'm currently 82 in my rating and have a record of 38-7.

But what are to expect from companies that are for profit? If they see an avenue to make a buck, they will do it. The XP purchase thing doesn't bother me. I have 25,000 in XP that I got for preordering from Gamestop. I decided to create a middleweight and use it on him.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

The guy was tossing straights constantly and on top of that using a lag switch. Four KD's and 6 rounds later he was down for good. No wonder he was backing out. I am very wary of someone who won't show me their punch screens for this reason.
You know, I never thought about the "showing of the punch screen" thing till you mentioned it. So I went back online (this time choosing my middleweight guy), and get my 79 guy matched up with another 79 guy. I showed him mine, he showed me his (jeez, that sounds so wrong), everything looked legit, and off we went.

We went the full 10 rounds with me finally KO'ing him with seconds to spare. I won the first few rounds, but he was coming back on me strong in the latter half of the fight. Afterwords I thought "THIS is what it's supposed to be like". Heck, even if he had flash KO'd me in the 10th, I would have been happy.

It's not the micro-transactions per se, but the whole premise of this iteration of OWC that is ****ed.. FNR4 leveled everyone's stats off.. It was about who was the better boxer.. FNC-C makes it so the players who spend the most time in the game or the most money will win everytime.. You don't have hours upon hours to dedicate to the game? Oh, you'll get your *** handed to you everytime you play by someone who does.. Tired of getting whooped? Spend some money and we'll boost your stats.. The whole premise is ridiculous. Imagine if 2K, Madden, COD or any other game allowed the same rubbish..

I decided to go ahead and buy this game soon, so I slapped 20 on a CAB to compete with the morons online. With 214/220 I maxed out blocking, heart, chin and head movement and levelled my head str8s/hooks to 15 (don't throw many UC's). I also made the body straights and the right hook 15 andd the combo the one that allows 8 punches (11 i think). My 1st fight was vs a top 20 OWC HW. Behind on all cards he 1-hit KO'd me in the last minute. The next 2 were 88 and 91 who ended up looking like Paul Williams.

All in all it's been worth it to me, mainly because beyond gifts FNC is my video game swan song. I can get into this a lot quicker with the xp.

So the 20's in the defense stats work out well for you? Thinking about doing something similar.

I finally maxed out my chin to 20 last night. That helps out a lot. The other thing is to not sit and trade punches. I was up all rounds last night and lost my discipline in the ninth and the guy caught me with a one punch KO. But if your blocking and chin are high, you should be able to compete. I'm going to have to do something about heart too.

The one thing is I'm not building a guy to compete with the one punchers. I want to make sure he can box too.

Yeah, chin (head) and heart (body) are huge. Many of these one armed fighters and even some two armed ones don't fill up one or the other, or both. I am going to max out one punch (not sure which, prolly lead body hook), but I did the defensive areas before I even looked at my punches. I did get 1 hit KO'd after doing it, but I rarely get stunned anymore and when I do it isn't for very long. Of course these guys usually don't have to box, so when you have a guy in their grill moving in and out and sideways like Sweet Pea Whitaker and Pac Man and their usual stuff doesn't work they have to switch gears. For some reason the other guy isn't falling down. It's round four by the time they pick up what I am doing to them but by that time my level 15 jab, straight and lead hook has busted up a few ribs and my level 15 head shots have raised more than a couple knots on either side of their face. Of course level 15 is flash knockdown. It doesn't matter if their chin is a 20, the potential is there.

Saying all that I am a natural counter puncher and have been in every boxing game I have ever played, all the way back to Legends of the Ring on SNES. While FNC allows me to utilize what I do, the one downside is a graze in the game engine is the same as a straight on shot, as if the sonic boom of the punch was just as powerful, therefore registering it as a hit. Were it not for that my opponents connect rate would in the 30's. I am playing to my style and more so than ever I can do that. If you are an outside guy I'd build the 1-2 up. Inside guy, hooks and uppercuts. Me, I don't like UC's because they take to long to load up, but I use everything else so they can't focus on one particular punch. By doing this I average about 10 landed counters per round.

Sorry about the diatribe. I just wanted to clarify in case someone had questions.

EDIT: just found out the last guy I beat was the #68 HW with a record of 170ish and 17 or something like that. Building defense works for sure if that's your style.

My idea worked. Here's a couple of fight reports I wanted to share. If you can take a punch they see their spam doesn't work and they almost get lost, and as many of you know easy to counter. I noticed max chin and heart with maxed toughness will all but nullify the 1 punch KO, at least until you have low health. The one time I was one-hit KO'd after doing the above I was at 50% on health and stamina and it was in round ten. Please notice the skill level of my opponents and their punch usage. Bully credit card CAB spammers who built their level up by KOing the 78's that just started playing.

Nice post, Shaun. I think that shows how you can beat them but at the same time you have to be very careful, especially in the later rounds. I fought a guy this morning to where I know his health was low but I did not want to get caught slugging it out in the 10th. I ended up knocking him out at the sound of the bell in the 10th round.

I think if they can adjust the stamina for power punches things would be a bit better off. Where it needs to be adjusted is in recovery of stamina. After a guy throws three of those and misses, he's spent. The problem is that he can go right back to it within seconds.

My chin is now full and my blocking is right behind it. I'm notches away from having my own KO punch. Patience will pay off. What's funny is I'm only an 82.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

BTW, I beat that DiBaggio guy. Something got switched around. He was my 1st victim after the XP and boosts.

A 1 to 2 point overall difference in fighters is HUGE. I fought several 80, 81, 83, rated opponents ALL with one single punch maxed out to 20. Then they throw that one single punch over and over.

You might say, well you can just run and out point them.......sure to a degree......but he will catch you a couple times and that is all it takes. I held one guy to a 20% connect rate through 6 rounds and he only landed 30 something punches, then boom he connects and of course 1 Punch flash KO. My third of the night, all by the same routine. Hell I held one guy to FIVE, let me restate that FIVE punches landed and he 1 Punch KOed me.

This is a HUGE issue, because it took me around 10 mins to find a match even with a guy with a rating that low. I came across several upper 80s guys. If your lowly 78 or 79 rated guy can't compete against this cheese from a 81 overall fighter, how in world would you make it out of 1st rd versus 88 overall guy?!?!?!

I am completely baffled by this design! I want to be clear that at community day we were NEVER told of these XP packs aka Micro-transactions. This has ruined online play for me, I am not going to spend more money on a damn XP pack just so I don't get KOed in first round. This is going to limit me to only to offline, I am completely disgusted by this. I don't even feel like going home and attempt to play this.

You got two options, 1) Either you spend days/weeks offline or sparring leveling up your fighter to finally be able to compete in OWC. 2) You spend even more money on XP pack to be able to compete.

What more needs to be said , perfect example of how these Micro-transactions are hurting the gaming industry and consumers such as myself. Because now it affects my hobby!

i don't want to spend money on xp packs just to keep up with the rest of the people online, but you are wrong in what your saying. you just need to give yourself guidelines to succeed. I started out & quickly realized you'll get dominated by anybody whos more than 1ovr more than you, if your 78 or 79ovr i wouldnt even fight anybody 1ovr more then you because you don't have 1 good punch, unless you think your amazing at this game. heres some guidelines to fix all your problems

                          A) never face anybody higher overall then you until your like 85+ ovr (at which point, you can beat anybody whos like 3ovr more then you or less). As you grow up into the 80's if your confident you can fight somebody who is 1-2 higher ovr then you, but no more then that unless your a beast or don't care

                          B) first thing you should work on in your skills is maxing out a single punch, anything but the jab. If you don't do this, even if you've grown in ovr you'll still get destroyed by guys who are equal ovr, you need to have an equalizer, so have 1 punch maxed out 1st. After you've maxed out a punch don't wait to long on building your chin, if you do wait it won't be long before your facing guys with multiple great punches that you won't stand a chance against, a great chin can save you.

                          C) even if you've unlocked the athletic boosters DO NOT USE THEM until your like 83+ ovr. The reason is, if your facing somebody at equal ovr (with your athletic boosters on) they could be 83 ovr with maxed out punching skills that will dominate you, and your boosters wont mean ****.

                          D) play legacy mode on easy & destroy it, never lose, and do everything that you need to to unlock all the boosters. Might take 15-20hr's total, but its worth it, you get your free boosters unlocked for good for any boxer you want to use online.

                          E) DON'T BY THE STUPID XP PACK. They are a 1 & out, so once you use it you never get it again, then say you decide you want to re-start your boxer because of your **** record or you don't like your style anymore... well you just wasted your money. ALSO, theres more reason then that. It takes about 150 wins to max out your boxers levels (220/220 levels) if you stick the the system above where you fight people at equal ovr or less then you, then having only 150 wins to complete an entire boxers attributes is really not that much time, if you pay for boosters your going to ruin your fun of building your boxer, you'll have him maxed out really quickly & once you max him out then what do you have to play for? nothing really, just rank/record/respect at that point, which will only give you enjoyment for so long til you want to start over anyways.

                          F) as i said, play same ovr or less then you. Obviously when your lower ovr thats going to take some time to find those matchups, read the PSN ID's of the guys that pop up on your screen that are higher overall then you, that way you don't gotta wait for the screen to load everytime, once you see the psn name that you know is higher ovr you can hit cancel & back out/try again. If you do this you can get in/out of the match finder in seconds, and you can find fights that much faster. I just started out with a lightweight from scratch, It was like 4am & it didn't take me more than like 5 minutes max finding fights at the same ovr as me, and lightweight is likely the most inactive division & i was searching at the most inactive hour.

so, just follow this format, you'll find fights, you won't get destroyed, you'll enjoy the process of actually building up your fighter, and you'll be able to do it all for free. I'm currently 157-31, and i'm bored because I can't build up my boxers skills anymore, I am going to start from scratch soon even though I have a boxer 88ovr & can fight anybody online right now. That shows you that online can be enjoyable if you do it right.

I agree, TheMainEvent. I just finished a fight against a guy that was pretty good. he had a goo mix of moving around and blocking my punches, but what really helped him was that he had upper and body punches balanced so that he could work me either way. He knocked me down early in the fight and I got him down twice and then once more in the tenth round. Had I not gotten those knockdowns, I would have lost the fight.

My guy is currently 85 but not quite where I want him yet. I'm 60-18.

That's the main reason that I don't care for playing online. It's sad that everyone feels they need to max out a punch just to compete. I'm not knocking the people who do it cause I can surely understand it, but I feel it's sad that it's gotten to that point.
