He just needs to fight Ricky Burns & Brandon Rios at 135 and then move up.. Take both of their doughnuts

I have to say Broner VS either Khan or Garcia at 140 would be a great matchup.

Ugh, why? Malinagigi couldn't hurt him if Broner let him fight with bear knuckles. Oh well it will atleast be a step up in class compared to what was at 135. Broner with the TKO in 9.

Interesting. Broner is going up to 147 in a not so gradual fashion. He fought as a super featherweight exactly a year ago. The fight is contingent on Broner accepting. I'm not so sure he will unless the money is great.

          Quote from Malinagigi:

"I just don't see him as a welterweight, I think he's talented, but I also think his team is biting off more than he can chew, We've heard from that entire side wanting the fight, except Broner himself. I think that says something. Weight classes exist for a reason."

I would love to know what Broner and Paulie walk around at when they are not in training for a fight. Paulie looks really small to me in his everyday life.

If Broner is going up to 147 he should test the waters first with a big name who is past his prime. Money wise, this makes sense as 147 is WAY more interesting than 140. TBH, I was hoping he'd get past 140 really quick. I guess Broner thought the same.

Rios, Khan or Garcia not interesting at 140?

I mean do you really think he'd be matched with Pac, FLoyd, or Marquez?

How does Paulie Malignaggi keep getting relatively big-name fights???? He must have the best management in the history of boxing. He's got boxing skill, but he's a light-hitting contender with no particularly exciting aspects to him that would be a solid Olympic boxer, but who has no appeal (to me, anyway) in the professional ranks. I don't think I've ever heard anyone get excited to see Paulie Malignaggi fight. I have no idea why Broner would waste his time with this fight.

Well give him his just due. He is and has been a champion (as you know).

That being said, I've never been crazy about light hitting guys. Malignaggi makes Pernell Whitaker look like Mike Tyson. Does his slight appeal have anything to do with being a New Yawker?

Paullie keeps getting fight for one reason. He is a "boxer" who can't hurt your prospect. He is a slick guy and a good technician. If you want to get a young prospect a fight that will show you if he can hit a slick boxer without really getting hit you put him in a fight with a guy like Paulie and you can get a good look at him and know that unless he has a glass jaw he won't get KOed.

Add to that the he has been a "champion" which is also a notch on a young fighters belt down the road. Paulie knows that which is why he can still make a comfortable living in fights he knows he probably isn't going to win.

Rios, Khan and Garcia will make interesting fights but they're not gona get as mush attention as fights at 147. I think Broner might indeed push for a fight against the top guys at 147 within a year. I'd rather see that than watch him fight at 140.

It's because he's an established name who is past his prime. Someone like Broner should fight Malignaggi to test himself before he fights someone stronger at 147.

Acknowledged, JayBee....although as you picked up on, I intentionally didn't mention he had been a champion since I have no idea what that means in boxing anymore.

I think you're on to something with his appeal having something to do with his Brooklyn background, though.

That's as good an explanation as I've heard. Makes a lot of sense. Paulie Malignaggi is like the real life Steve Lombardi (also from Brooklyn! Allegedly, anyway...).

I love boxing, but I hate it so much at the same time...

Paulie also is a colorful personality. And he's also white, which is important since boxing still plays on race arguably more than any other sport.

Kelly Pavlik, Andy Lee, Mike Lee (what a joke) and a few others have been the latest and greatest "Great White Hopes." Nationality/race always is brought up when a Puerto Rican fights a Mexican.

And don't forget that Manny Pacquiao's nickname through the mid-2000s was "The Mexicutioner" because he beat top Mexican fighters Barrera, Morales and Marquez.

Yeah, but if he hit like a mule, his celebrity would go through the roof. I think there's a popularity ceiling on pop gun power.
