      Re: Boxing Off-Topic

So I've got a couple of questions. Went to my first Boxing event on Wednesday night in Leeds and I'm trying to get a bit more into it, more so because there's actually a decent fighter from Leeds. He (Josh Warrington) is only a Featherweight at the moment and he's not that well known outside of England I think.

The two questions I've got now are:

      - Why are there different sanctioning bodies, what's the difference?
      - I've noticed Manny Pacquiao went up and down the weight classes, why? I know of his reputation though, just curious.

There are a lot of sanctioning bodies for the same reason there are more weight classes....more championship fights and more money, although the most prestigious are the WBA, WBC, and IBF.

Pacquiao is going where the money is, but after Oscar (I think it was a catchweight fight) and Hatton he has fought mostly as a welterweight.

I thought WBC was, it seemed a big deal on Wednesday (Stephen Smith beat Mauricio Munoz to get close to a title shot for WBC Featherweight).

I don't think I've really been properly interested before, more so because there hasn't been a good boxer from Leeds. You've got Hatton from Manchester, who wasn't particularly liked round here (Leeds and Manchester don't particularly like each other), Amir Kahn who is pretty well known and a Carl Froch - George Groves rivalry which is hyped up a lot right now (fighting at Wembley in front of at least 70,000).

Warrington's unbeaten so far (18-0 as Featherweight), so I'm just wanting to see how big he can get. I'm not sure if it's the most prestigious of weight classes but if he carries on like this he'll become well known..

I'm really pumped for that fight, especially after that ridiculous stoppage.

What about the Stevenson-Fonfara fight? I believe that Adonis hurt his left hand early in the fight.

It's looking to be a record crowd for Boxing over here. Needs to beat 70,000 which I imagine it should.

I don't think I've ever seen a match as hyped up as this in the UK anyway. It'll go mental as it's the only thing left until the World Cup so everyone will probably be talking about it.

I had totally missed the fight (I'm an American), saw it on YouTube and posted this in March:

The Carl Froch-George Groves fight kind of slipped under my radar. Then I'm hearing about the controversial ending, how Groves petitioned the IBF for a rematch, and how that rematch will most likely be the most lucrative fight to "ever take place" in Britain. The 60,000 tickets at Wembley sold out in 90 minutes, with hopes that another 20,000 will be available through what I'm assuming is added/temporary seating. The Sky PPV could exceed $30 million.

So I watched the fight on YouTube yesterday, and although Froch was given a gift early stoppage and inexplicably close scores on two of the judges' cards (down only 65-67, despite losing 6 of the first 8 rounds, and being knocked down in the first round), he took all those big right hands by Groves and hurt him in the 9th. Check out the video. Keep in mind both fighters were getting hit. The stoppage comes at about the 49 second mark.

                The rematch is May 31st.

I like this Fonfara kid though. He'll move up in the Ring rankings from 10th no doubt.

I liked David Lemieux too. He's got a great left hook and is a vicious body puncher. I'm surprised Marco Antonio Rubio was able to KO him. I'd like to see Quillin-Lemieux real soon.

Well Mayweather's next fight came and went and we didnt have to shell out 75 bucks for it.

^Lmao, of all the people to pick a fight with, why would you try to fight mayweather?

Also, i'm gonna have to check out that stevenson fight, apparently it was a really good fight. Honestly i wasn't expecting much from it because i didn't think fonfara would be very good.

Amazing that he lasted after that vicious body punch by Stevenson that knocked him down. The pained look on his face said it all. After that he was hurt to the body all night. Not only did he survive but he had Adonis in a little danger of losing the fight.

The 2nd and 3rd fights on the Showtime card from this weekend were good. Skip the Charlo fight...I fell asleep during that fight (literally). I woke up and proceeded to fast-forward through the remainder. It was a literal snoozer.

Serious chinks in the armor for Stevenson...although the kid he was fighting was tough as nails. Hard to know for certain what to make of it, but Kovalev must be feeling more confident than ever that he can beat Stevenson. If only he could ever get him into a ring...

Didn't stevenson hurt his hand in the fight though? And yeah i've heard about the charolo brothers, don't understand the big deal behind them.

Yeah, his left (power) hand. I haven't heard to what extent.

I heard that as well. I don't doubt that it's true, but still...he looked awful one-dimensional after that.

On the plus side, he found a way to win the fight. Can't minimize that at all.
