Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I understand what your saying but those fights tonight showed the true art skill science and heart of boxing. That Vidal vs Aileem fight was beautiful to watch from a boxer vs puncher contrast of styles and the mastery of infighting displayed by both was what boxing was all about. The charlo vs castano fight was also the same way two different styles and infighting and counterpunching at its finest, I thought the draw was fair but castano pressured the fight and to me win by a point would love to see that again. Great night of boxing for me .,
Great main event too with the momentum swings and what the announcers left out is that Charlo was stunned himself at least once, but I think twice as he was swarmed and clipped pretty badly. Round 3 and one of the later rounds I can't recall.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

I loved the Aileem fight too - I love being surprised when you see someone rise to the challenge and answer the call under the bright lights and perform at their best. After the fight hearing he is now 2-3-1 in his last stretch of fights is amazing because he's got a lot of heart an talent. He's the type of guy if a trainer is looking for a tune-up fight they just say "no thank you" lol, obviously after seeing this because you could get your up and coming fighter beat badly!

I started watching very late into the Vidal/Aileem fight.
I agree with you, I thought Castano won but I can't argue with a draw. I can argue with one judge giving it 117-111 for Charlo though.
That fight was more frustrating to me more than anything else. Charlo spent a lot of time patty cake jabbing into Castano's gloves and backing himself into the ropes. Think it was after the 4th round his trainer even told him to stop because he was giving rounds away. He didn't listen. He also never listened and went for the body. Castano spent the whole fight in a high guard but Charlo never made a full effort to attack the body.
Charlo beat himself
I also thought Charlo let Castano off the hook when he had him fazed. He let Castano get his legs back. He could have pressed for the stoppage and really hurt Castano.
117-111 was waaaaaayyyy off but it was a deserving draw and tbh a very disappointing showing for Charlo. Not much sense or urgency and allowed himself to get hit more than I've ever seen before. Credit for Castano though. He walked Charlo for nearly the entire fought and came out OK.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I thought it was an OK night of fights. I was fighting sleep for some of the bouts, so that's never a good sign (my unofficial "nap" scale of excitement). Agree with you guys that the Aleem fight was surprisingly the best of the night. The 117-111 in the Charlo fight I just chalk up to "it's Texas". The boxing commission there makes Las Vegas look almost on-the-level.
I don't know if anyone really knows the PPV buys for the Charlo brothers' PPV last year, but the fact that they are both back on regular Showtime pretty much tells you all you need to know. The bottom line is that they are not draws, and no one outside of real hardcore fight fans even knows who they are.
Side note: Showtime really needs to bring back Paulie Malignaggi for that 3rd color analyst seat. Nothing against Abner Mares - he seems like a nice guy and was a really good fighter, but he adds absolutely nothing to the broadcasts and most of the time you forget he's even there. Whatever the issue was with Paulie, it didn't sound like something that could/should keep him in exile forever, and the Renallo-Bernstein - Malignaggi trio was the best in boxing (even when HBO still had fights). Whatever you think of Paulie personally, he brought a lot of insight about technique and "inside baseball" knowledge, and was as close to a boxing Romo as there was. And he was also entertaining, which ultimately is the point of all of this. Bring him back immediately.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Yeah I'm a huge Paulie fan. I never cared too much for him as a fighter (always thought he slapped instead of punched) but his insight and knowledge of the fight game inside the ring was rock solid. A lot of people possess that knowledge but don't have the ability to translate it into commentary. Roy Jones was terrible. Andre Ward is just OK but Paulie IMO was really good and likeable.THANKS FOR THE TRADE SANDIEGO KEEP RIVERS WE'LL TAKE ELIComment

As a fan/consumer, though, I think he is sorely missed in that 3rd seat on the ShoBox crew.Comment

Best comment on Twitter;
Paint watches Rigo dry.
I hope he never gets another televised fight. He makes John Ruiz look like a prime Mike Tyson.

Did anyone catch Muhammad Ali’s grandson the other night? You want to talk about hype they made this kid to be the next coming of ali and to be honest he was terrible but fought a damn mma fighter who looked like he just got home from the bar I don’t know if Timothy Bradley had to praise this kid but it was not accurate.. they going to hype this kid up until he gets his head knocked off!!THANKS FOR THE TRADE SANDIEGO KEEP RIVERS WE'LL TAKE ELIComment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
There's a world of difference between "defense" and "running away", and I don't think there's any legitimate argument that what Rigondeaux does is anything other than running away. What he does borders on cowardice, and I don't use that word lightly given that I respect anyone that steps into the squared circle. But Rigo actively avoids fighting, which is kind of a problem given that the main objective of the sport is fighting.
Rigo can be given victories on the cards, heck he can even be champ for all I care, I just don't want to see him on TV ever again.

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I'll give him a chance. The trunks thing was cool - I love retro stuff though. But while I understand the opinions of hyping it etc, yes they were - I don't get the HATE. 1st pro fight, sure opponent was a bum and that's fine by me. Once he gets past a few more cans they'll step it up a bit. at the end of the day it was a fun quick knockout nothing more and nothing less.
It's the "American Idol" model of fabricating stars out of whole cloth, as opposed to setting up an ecosystem for fair competition that allows fighters to prove who is the best in the ring. I know that will never change and it's always been that way, but in some ways, it's never been more visible to the average fan than it is now. There are 3 big promotions who have aligned themselves with their own networks to output their own cards, and none of the fighters from the different promotions will ever meet in the ring (at least, not in a timeframe that coincides with their primes). Now that everyone knows that (even the most casual of fight fans), it's hard to really get excited about much of anything that happens in the sport. The difference between boxing and WWE is vanishingly small.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I think what people are criticizing (or flat-out hating on) is not so much the kid himself, but moreso the whole business of boxing. The Ali kid is just a highly visible example/metaphor for the way boxing runs its business.

I should point out that the "hate" I was referring to wasn't so much in here but over the web in news articles and youtube etc the comments saying his last name isn't Ali and it's a disgrace etc while I think that if MA was my grandfather I'd be proud too and since it's the same line of work I'd probably do the same thing. I don't see it as a cash grab I think he's genuinely proud (who wouldn't be) and that he'll do his best in the ring and def feels some weight of responsibility to try his best to become some form of 'great'.
People are too quick to form these un-thoughtful strong opinions these days and align themselves with a one side or the other mindset.
Regarding the state of boxing though, yeah it's too bad it's setup that way, but on the flip side pacman vs spence was a great bout before it went away same with Canelo v Bivol which is now back to plant. So although I whole-heartedly agree with you we still get a few treats every year.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment
