    Re: Boxing Off-Topic

Yeah, I've given up on the idea that boxing will ever get together as a sport and provide a real unified vision of competition. That's the nature of a sport where every participant is essentially an independent contractor.

It's almost better to think of boxing as an exhibition activity rather than a true "sport". I suppose Olympic boxing is a sport, but at the professional level, it's a bunch of independent agents deciding on negotiated 1-off exhibitions, that may or may not be designated a "title" fight by some unaccountable organization or other. But nothing about boxing operates as a true sport in the way that any other modern professional sport operates.

Maybe things change over time, but I can see boxing fading into "Bolivian" (to quote my favorite fighter) even moreso now than ever before, with the entire sport being PPV at this point. It's like the very early years of MMA - ultra-niche and zero cultural cache. So be it. There are worse things in the world than boxing going the way of horse racing.

So how many people enjoyed the Shakur fight last night? lol
I ask because its amazing the difference between hardcore sweet science fans and boxing casuals!! I watched the fight with my sons and brothers they literally fell asleep and were frustrated at the lack of action I on the other hand enjoyed the tactical punches footwork set ups and thr defensive discipline exhibited by both. Now dont get me wrong that was the first opponent who
had Shakur not throwing combos or trying to stay in the pocket!!
he had his attention and had him shook at times. Santos is cat quick if he could put together some aggressive footwork he could best the majority of fighters in his class now!! again I enjoyed it when I
tried explaining what hst I was seeing thry said I was nuts!! lol

Idk Eddy. Even as a fellow boxing purist and someone who really rates Shakur I have to say that was an awful main event. The fact that we had to wait until rounds 8+ to see some exchanges just showed how dead it was which was a shame because the undercards had some nice knockouts from some really good promising up and comers.

Adam Azim was really impressive against Franck Petitjean to get a deserving win. Who do you guys see as his next opponent?

I would not consider myself a student of the sweet science by any means. I'm a guy that likes to watch 2 guys pound the stuffing out of each other. So for me, that was one of the more boring fights I've seen in a while.

I can appreciate good defense, but to me that requires one of the fighters to press the action in order to really see how good the defense is. Otherwise, it's simply lack of aggression. If I recall correctly, there were zero rounds (ZERO!) where there was a double-digit connect % by both fighters combined! The CompuBox stats guy must have been bored as hell. I think even Floyd would have been bored by that fight.

If that's the best boxing can offer on what is increasingly its last major media platform, the sport is much worse off than even I would have thought.

Guys, I'm pumped for Benavidez vs Andrade - it doesn't matter if Boo Boo is normally not exciting because David B doesn't know how to do anything other than move forward and constantly throw hard shots. What about clinches you ask? Well the trend this year especially has been fighters throwing rough shots within the clinch and the ref's allowing it (because they should and nobody said to stop fighting!) Worst case is a ref warns David, but that would be pretty rare unless he's hitting the back of the head - nothings says you can't push to give yourself some room and then violently throw shots. Look at the Plant fight - plant was doing well but just got broken down by the rough inside work.

So win or lose, there will be blood!

Also excited to see brother Benavidez against absentee Charlo - that won't be a boring fight either!

                  Same.
Sports are supposed to be entertaining and that fight wasn't in the least.
As you stated, I can appreciate a good defense if it's athletic and it's leading to offense.
Prime Tyson, Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard,... these guys were fun to watch defensively because they'd use it to set up combo's.

I will never pay money to see Shakur fight. I may pay to watch who he's fighting, but this fight hurt his PPV worth. The best thing he could do is fight Garcia next.
Because if he picks another contender and it's the same result, he'll never be able to get a decent fight again.
The reward won't come close to the risk.

On another note, I cannot wait for the Dec 23rd Wilder/Joshua PPV.
It's being advertised as $49.99 USD which is a steal when you look at this stacked card.

I didn't see much improvement honestly. The compubox numbers had both fighters pretty even, but Duerte just didn't seem to be aggressive enough. Garcia looked good early then timid in the middle rounds (5 and 6 specifically). A talented opponent would've have potentially floored Garcia during those rounds. Then, Garcia looked completely different in the last two rounds when he decided power punches were the strategy to employ.

If his next fight is against Rolando Romero, it'll be interesting to see how each operate against the other. Neither fighter has been overly impressive.

Yeah it was a strange fight in the sense that Garcia looked ok early, he was throwing his jab but then he abandoned it and started that Philly shell defense which tbh, he looked awkward as hell doing and got caught with several lead hooks. Then he started using his legs which again looked weird but actually worked since it caused Duarte to chase him and get tired and eventually get caught by the power of Garcia.

Duarte just looked off and like you said, vs a better fighter Garcia would have been in trouble. Garcia wants no parts of the better fighters in that 140 range but he’s a good draw so he’ll get his chances

I'm not sure Haney has much power. He's a much better technical fighter than Progaris, but Progaris has a much bigger power advantage. I think Haney wins if he gets ahead early and lands a lot of punches. The longer the match goes, the more it favors Progaris' power.

Yeah I am 100% tripping lol.

I just think Haney can stay away from that big left. He’s very patient for a semi-young fighter.
