That's because there's only 5 divisions and one belt each.

Lightweights used to sell out MSG decades ago because there were only 8 classes and one defined champ.

And heavyweights have always been the golden division because it's the biggest, baddest men going at it.
It's like the Great White Shark. They're the biggest and deadliest, but most people don't realize the Tiger and Bull Shark, who are smaller, are far more ornery and kill more swimmers than Great White's.
Size sells. (please, no 'that's what she said' replies, lol)
True. But the belief that heavyweights always have dominated boxing is a myth.

Middleweights and welterweights ruled boxing in the early 80s, with the Four Kings -- Leonard, Duran, Hagler, Hearns -- fighting each other often. That also was a dark period for heavyweights, between Holmes and the rise of Tyson.

Same thing happened in the 50s after Marciano retired. Middleweights such as Basilio and Sugar Ray Robinson ruled boxing until the rise of Liston and Ali.

One of the reasons heavyweight became so popular in the 1970s and throughout the 80s was that every top heavyweight in the world was an American. And that's arguably more of a reason why heavyweights aren't as popular now, as Wilder is the only top U.S. heavy, and he is an absolute joke.

well, maybe i am a so-called 'casual fan' too

adonis was indeed light-heavyweight, i reckon a interview saying they tried to push his weight to hw-class but wasn't possible for some reason. though i believe Rocky simply should remain the Heavyweight Champ and Creed shouldn't be the guy taking the HW-crown back coz even Sly in his Rocky-Movies wasn't a true heavyweight, around 170-180 pounds in true life but all the movies where 'heavyweight fights'....it simply sells better and fits better fighting the 'big guys'. They could never release a Rocky IV with Ivan Drago as LHW hehe

So, Rocky is HW-Champ and Creed is the LHW Champ (though it's still the first Creed-Movie produced).

yeah, even the klitchkos had to fight in the US to gain attention earlier... now all travel to the UK to gain attention ... even Shannon Briggs travels to the UK for his promotions to arrange fights (which never happen lol).

Frank Warren is an outstanding promoter. He also does what so few promoters in the U.S. do these days -- he promotes. Warren works the media, does marketing, does social media, etc.

Most U.S. "promoters" are nothing more than TV packagers who do easy, lucrative deals with casinos and don't develop fighters in their home markets. They couldn't sell water in the Sahara.

Despite being in his 80s, Arum is the exception to this rule. He and Top Rank have done a nice job building Crawford into an attraction in Omaha. Lou DiBella also understands the importance of markets, as he has built a nice little franchise with Broadway Boxing in New York.

Haymon and PBC are the worst. He thought he could just buy TV time for crap PBC fights, and the viewers and advertisers would flock to his product. He thought wrong. Haymon has no clue about sports marketing, PR or promotions. He just knows money.

The PBC already is on life support. It will be gone by 2019, at the latest. Thank God.

Ill take the free fights for as long as they exist. Some less big names upcoming but they do have Brook-Spence (May 27) and Stevenson-Fonfara (June 3), both on ShowTime.

Showtime isn't free. Haymon is moving more and more PBC fighters to premium cable because his PBC concept is a financial flop.

I don't want boxing to fail. I would love to see it on free TV. But the last thing boxing needs is more Balkanization with promotional enterprises, such as PBC, that refuse to work with other promoters.

very true....i read stallone was around 165 or so when he fought lang in the rematch in rocky III. he did look pretty slimmed down from the first lang fight, going with the speed strategy in that rematch. on an interesting side note, conlan from creed (tony bellew) was the WBC cruiserweight champion and beat haye at heavyweight recently. just a thought, but maybe they can have adonis move up to heavyweight (against a larger opponent) in a sequel to reclaim the title his father held for so long. what the heck, bring in the rock as the opponent. he's been in everything lately. lol.

It's free enough. The point is even if PBC crashes and burns some free or semi-free entertainment will be provided. I could care less about Haymon one way or the other.

Pretty simple reason why American boxers have fallen off. You make infinitely more money playing Football, basketball or baseball. The best American fighters all play other sports.

                        Re: Boxing Off-Topic

I'm not sure why, but my interest in UFC has decreased recently and my interest in boxing has increased again.

I watched the Charlo bout as well as the Porter/Berto bout yesterday morning and was very impressed with Charlo.

I think Porter vs. Thurman will be good if it happens. That division seems to have some promise, especially the top 5 or 6. I'll be interested to see Brook vs. Spence next month.

As for Klitschko vs. Joshua, count me in as excited. It's not a game changer bout, but if it's highly entertaining by chance, it will go a long way in helping the overall boxing landscape.

No doubt. ShowTime has the live broadcast starting at 4:15 PM ET, then HBO replays it Saturday night.

                                This is freaking great
