I'm not sure Matthysse ever was considered a truly elite welterweight. I always thought the boxing world perceived him accurately -- a tough-as-hell gatekeeper for all of the true giants of the division and a guy who brought it in every bout. Matthysse rarely was in a dull fight and would take two to throw one.

    Same with Maidana.

All depends on how flexible you are with "elite". I think him and Garcia were considered the top 140 guys for about three years. For the most part, his losses to Judah and Alexander were considered as not happening. In any event, his upset loss to Postol exposed him and the fractured orbital bone he suffered in that fight took too much out of him.

Matthysse was elite at junior welter. I don't think he ever carried that to 147 because the field of top fighters is much deeper at welterweight, one of boxing's three marquee weight classes along with middleweight and heavyweight.

Sorry, PK-somehow totally screwed up your welterweight designation (even though I highlighted it, LOL). I read right over it.

He was done before he came to 147.

I think that bad cut that Matthysse got in the Garcia fight really altered the way that fight went. I'm a little surprised that we never a rematch of that bout, but it's way too late for that now.

Kovalez might be in for a rough time tonight. His legal problems, endurance issues, and the last fight still being in his head all weigh against him.

Very late start time (Midnight EST).

Yeah I agree. Weird how espn is basically showing boxing and mma back to back to back on the same night. Also advertising lakers vs warriors on abc. Very busy night of sports.

Making excuses, truth or a little bit of both? Very intriguing rematch. In addition to Buddy McGirt training him, he also has strength and conditioning coach Teddy Cruz assisting him.

Impressive victory for Kovalez. Buddy McGirt's "just touch him, keep it simple" strategy plus Sergey's obvious improvement stamina-wise carried the day. Those heavy-handed "touches" gave Alvarez a medium size beating throughout the fight. His attempts at windup right hands either missed or were absorbed without consequence by Kovalez.

I thought 120-108 was more accurate than 116-112.

Yeah alverez really didnt do anything in that fight. Do you think the Lopez vs lomo fight will happen?

I doubt they rush that one. Lopez does look sensational.

Straight dynamite power. Love the combos he was throwing.

Lomachenko is fighting next on April 12 on ESPN+ against Richard Commey, who won in an impressive knockout on the ESPN undercards last night to the ESPN+ card. The date and matchup were announced on the show.

Commey will be a live dog. He has pop and can box. Definite underdog, but he could last a while against Loma.

Lopez is a sensational prospect. He's also being matched to look good. He's nowhere near ready for Lomachenko, just like Munguia is nowhere near ready for the elite at 154 or 160.

the fight came on so late I had to go to bed and missed all but the 1st round. they said 12am est, but really it was more like 1am start time - brutal.

Boxing is getting a bit too hard to follow, from my perspective. I never thought I'd say this, but I wish we could go back to the days where pretty much every major fight was on HBO or Showtime. At least in that case, you need cable +2 premium channels and you're good to go.

At this point, you need DAZN, ESPN+, Showtime, and whatever else. I understand the argument that you can simply replace what you pay for HBO and Showtime with DAZN/ESPN+, but the issue is that there is other content that makes HBO/Showtime worthwhile aside from boxing. With DAZN and ESPN+ (assuming I only care about ESPN+ for boxing, which is the case), I'm paying premium cable fees for once-a-week events, many of which I don't even really care that much about.

I realize some of this is me being an old guy and not acknowledging the changing entertainment landscape, but I feel like I'm not alone in not wanting to have 5+ streaming service subscriptions to deal with.
