The problem was that in a submission, the first gate was no easier or harder than the last gate. In a 5 gate sub, you basically get 5 consecutive opportunities to escape the exact same gate.
As a result, if you had good sub defense, you escaped on the first gate almost every time. So lots of subs were just ending real quick.
UFC3's idea of keeping your progress as you move to the next gate is cool. I like that they found a way to make submission a bit more of a struggle by making the first gate real hard to escape and the later ones easier. It can be used strategically to get better positions, etc.
The problem is the one gaters. They're way too OP under the current sub system.
