Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
Well I got my answer finally, it definitely matters.
I have an old console and 2008 samsung TV, jigsaw has xbox x and gaming monitor.
I haven’t actually gotten a chance to play a “top-top” player who I know for a fact has the new equipment. Finally did, and man, you can just FEEL the difference in responsiveness, in striking AND grappling. Certain problems in responsiveness I’ve just come to accept as part of the game don’t even exist for new gen users.
You know how sometimes blocking feels unresponsive while striking? Like you try to switch to a low block but still eat the body kick? Or you flick to deny a transition but it gets through anyways? We compensate for these issues with anticipation and skills. We try to block on reaction when we can, despite how tedious it is. And we can get by usually, if we’re on our A game. These are just things us old gen console users accept as part of the game. We don’t even think about it anymore because there’s nothing we can do about it.
But man, when I played jigsaw today it was like an eye opener to how significant these disadvantages are. I didn’t even realize these things mattered until I played jigsaw and their presence led directly to my destruction. It’s like new gen console/monitor users don’t even have to think about that stuff. They can just see the animation on their screen, and react accordingly.
It’s just so weird because I’ve totally become naive to my disadvantages on the older equipment. I’ve just basically accepted that no matter what, 20-30% of my defensive moves will fail. I’ve just accepted that I have to pre-deny certain kicks and transitions, because if I wait until the animation, I’ll miss the window.
I’ve just assumed that being good at this game requires a certain level of guesswork and anticipation. I never realized that it’s actually possible to play this game and have reliable, consistent responses to your controller inputs. Crazy.
Tl;dr jigsaw ****ed me up. Realized how important consoles and monitors are in high level play. I need to update my equipment.Xbox GT: the relaxed guyComment

Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
I'm not sure how these things work exactly but if I'm not mistaken there are ways to make the game run at 60fps on the regular consoles as well. If that's true they should absolutely look to do that.Comment

Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
We can render at 60 hz on the pro/S because of the extra horsepower, but we need to be able to have those games play online against the lower end versions of the consoles, so we're stuck with 30Hz as long as that requirement stands.Comment

And the dev this earlier this month:

Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
Xbox x does not play at a real 60 FPS. How could I be play ranked at 60 fps and my opponent is at 30. Wouldn’t even make sense.
The only advantage comes from the monitor. If there is any. But again, that has nothing to do with EA.Comment

So with the moniter, its just reduced input delay then?Comment

Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
Why is everyone so keen on upgrading their monitor and their console then? MartialMind said he's playing on a regular TV but since he upgraded to PS4 Pro there's been a significant improvement in quality. I think I can even see it in his videos. It's just smoother. I've talked to people I've faced asking if they're on Pro, they've replied that they are and that it makes a huge difference. I can feel it too. The Pro definitely gives an advantage but if it's not FPS, what is it then?Comment

Re: Top players: do you use a new gen console and/or monitor?
If the game auto downgrades back to 30fps for online play, then its just the reduced input delay with the moniter helping i'm thinking. But its facts that the game looks smoother and feels better running on the Pro or 1X at 60fps. You can even see it in youtube vids.Last edited by WarMMA; 03-31-2019, 02:52 PM.Comment
