UFC agrees to deal with FOX?

    Is this legit?

In what would represent a major push into the mainstream for the UFC, Fox has agreed to a deal that will see the broadcast channel air as many as four MMA events per year, according to several sources. The multiyear deal would mark the first time the UFC will have consistent airtime on a broadcast network. Fox execs refused to comment on the deal, but sources with knowledge of the negotiations said bidding had gone as high as $90M per year. The Fox deal is believed to be for seven or eight years. As part of the deal, most of the weekly programming that UFC has on Versus and Spike TV will move to FX starting in January. That includes several fight cards, plus shows like the reality series "The Ultimate Fighter." Fox-owned Fuel also will wind up with some UFC content. But rumors that Fox will rebrand Fuel as a UFC channel are not true, sources said. Fox was attracted to UFC programming, which has produced some of the highest viewership figures -- and most attractive demos -- on Versus and Spike TV. UFC also has become more mainstream, with almost all states now sanctioning the sport, although New York remains a notable holdout. Both the Versus and Spike TV deals with UFC expire at the end of the year. UFC has long looked to get a broadcast TV deal for its content. Sources said UFC had been negotiating with Comcast/NBC for several months in a deal that would have included NBC and Versus and would have seen G4 rebranded as a UFC channel, but those talks recently broke down. The UFC's talks with Viacom-owned Spike ended before that. Sources said Spike ultimately passed over concern that its UFC shoulder programming stopped growing. Shows like "Unleashed," "Knockouts" and "Countdown" averaged 1 million viewers in '05. This year, they are averaging 492,000. Spike holds the rights to UFC library programming through '12, including old fights and shoulder programming such as "UFC Unleashed." UFC's Sunday night event in Milwaukee on Versus also drew 766,000 viewers from 9:00-11:09pm ET, marking the net's most-viewed program for the week ending August 14. That figure is up 3% from 744,000 viewers for the last UFC event on Versus on June 26.

The other rumor I read was Fox will get 4 events and the Spike deal will remain the same. Spike would continue to air TUF.

Re: UFC agrees to deal with FOX?

I'm happy with the deal except for the Fuel piece. Fox equals more PPV quality events on free TV. Plus Fox is a better fit for the UFC than any other demo. Factor in UFC promotion on things like the NFL and MLB is huge. FX will promote the show just as much if not more than Spike.

Spike will probably pick up Bellator and Bellator will now be in HD so thats good.

          Interesting. Good stuff Aaron

So what's the forecast look like in terms of the next five years? In terms of getting MMA into the main mainstream.

MMA is aleady in the mainstream........everybody knows what MMA is. However, you still have a lot of people who refuse to watch it because they view it as nothing but over glorified cockfighting..

Plus I'm not surprised about the Fox deal since Versus is changing their name to somethng else in January and they are going to be part of the NBC family in January as well.

This is the true test on the UFC's ability to be a mainstream sport. Now looking back at the numbers that CBS did with Elite XC and Strikeforce, I would be SHOCKED if the UFC doesnt crush those. Fedor v. Rogers did 4 million. One of Kimbo's fights did 5 mil. Most casual fans had no idea who Fedor was at that time. Most people only knew Kimbo from his Youtube videos. Both of those fights did huge numbers. Think what the UFC will do with fighters that people actually know.

The big decision for the UFC going forward is what fights to put on Fox and what fights stay on PPV. Fox isnt paying 90 mil a yr (The total deal is for over half a billion dollars) just to have Chris Leben v. Mark Munoz fight in a main event. They want the top dogs. Lets say Jones beats Rampage. What does the UFC do? Jones v. Evans on Fox would do great numbers but it would also probably get anywhere from 700k to 1 million buys.

Back to your question, I think it helps with the mainstream but its not a slam dunk. The sport is what it is. Some people will always hate the ground game and be turned off by the sport. But getting more viewers on Fox and on FX (which has more subscribers than Spike) cant hurt. Also will force networks like ESPN to cover the sport (even though ESPN is doing much better these days)

Right, but what I'm really getting at is how plausible is it that UFC moves away from the PPV model? Or at least have less PPV's because most of the events will be on network television. Probably too difficult to tell at this point.

Imagine putting Brock on FOX? My god.

Would you guys prefer they move away from the PPV model? Or does it really matter to you guys.

They not going to ever move away from the PPV model, that brings in too much money for them to give that up. I mean from a business stand point, that would be totally stupid.

Will never be less PPV. Too much money on the table. Thats why the UFC is so focused on getting more fighters. They need more main eventers to put on PPV and now Fox.

Doesnt really matter to me. I buy the fights I want. Watch the PPV fights I dont want on Sopcast.

For guys like redrule who are teens that love the sport but cant put down 60 bucks a month to watch a ppv this is great. Plus there are a ton of potential fans who have never watched a PPV but would become fans of it was on Fox.

****, one of the main reasons I'm a fan is because I caught up with the UFC PPV by watching repeats of them for free on InHD back in 2007.

Re: UFC agrees to deal with FOX?

This is great news. I've never heard of the Fuel Channel and couldn't name a single show on FX but I'm assuming Sportsnet will still cover all of the events.

White has always said if they the UFC is on Network TV, they will have PPV quality cards.

I know the UFC is going to load up the first show. I would be shocked if Lesnar isn't on it. The bad news for the UFC is that every big fight that is on Fox takes away a big fight that could have been on PPV. The PPV business is where Zuffa makes their money.

PPV sales in 2011 are on pace to be down from 2010. Having big fights on Fox could hurt PPV sales in 2012 and beyond. If you're a casual fan and you get 4 big cards on Fox and let's say 8 Fight Night type cards a year, is there even an incentive to pay for PPV's?

Some of the cards today aren't that good because most fighters aren't active enough. Zuffa needs to address this problem. If you're healthy, you should be fighting 3 times a year.

Another issue I want to see the UFC address is some sort of season ticket for PPV's. Off the top of my head, I've paid for almost every PPV this year but I don't get any perks for doing it. For my loyalty (I spend a lot of money on UFC products where it's PPV's, Live Events, Fan Expo, etc..), I want to be rewarded with either a discount or free swag.

More free MMA is always great for everyone.
The increase of fans is something that might have helped drive this deal.

I don't have fuel either, so I will just stream the cards that appear on there.
