    Re: UFC 151 - Jones vs. Hendo - Sept 1 - Vegas

I saw a commercial for this card last night, and they advertised it as being on Sept. 22nd but with Jones vs. Henderson as the main event. I was so confused because I knew it was on the 1st and was wondering why the PPV commercial listed as the 22nd. Maybe they already knew they were moving the card yesterday?

A part of me is disappointed that Jon turned down the fight with Chael Sonnen. A champion is supposed to defend their title against all challengers. However, I can also understand why he would turn down the fight with Chael. What would Jon Jones gain by beating a guy with 8 days notice? He stands to lose a lot if he gets beaten by Chael Sonnen (who definitely has a legitimate chance of defeating Jon Jones).

If I was in Jon's situation I would probably have done the same thing and turn down the fight with Chael. I would have told Sonnen that I would want to fight him at his best with him having a full training camp to prepare. If Jon was to turn down a potential fight in that situation then everyone should call him a ***** if he were to do that.

A lot of what I'm saying is wishful thinking but there are so many things that go on in this sport that cause for fights to suddenly change. With this situation of going from preparing to fight Dan Henderson to fighting Chael Sonnen there is definitly a ton of risk on the side of Jon Jones. Jones has a number of advantages on his side such as fighting a man who has been fighting at 185 move up to 205 and is only getting 8 days notice. The advantages are definitely in Jon's favor but that uncertainty of only having 8 days to prepare for Chael Sonnen is too much of a risk if I was Jon Jones.

In my opinion he lost a lot more by declining a fight than he would have taking it and say by some miracle, Sonnen pulled the upset, and Jones lost the fight. Jones' marketability just went in the tank. Plus, lets not forget, by him pulling out of the fight with the replacement opponent, he just took a paycheck away from 20 other fighters on that card. Plus I dont buy the risk BS. Chael is a wrestler without a lot of power in his standup. He would have to close the distance to get in takedown range, and vs John Jones, that is playing into Jones's game. Jones just ensured 20 men will never ever train with him or do anything for him ever in his career.

Nope they cancelled one in Montreal.

I'm not sure how the next is 152 if there's no 151. Shouldn't it still be 151?

I personally see nothing wrong with Jones not wanting to take the fight. Why is Chael all of a sudden next in line for a title shot anyway?

It's not his fault the entire card is scrapped. Blame the UFC for putting together crappy cards.

They are talking about completely cancelling an event, especially after all of the promotion.

It wasn't about being in-line for a title shot; Hendo went down 8 days before a fight. Everyone else had already just fought, or is already set with fights. Sonnen stepped up and was willing to fill Hendo's void and it doesn't hurt that he's a draw. Give him even a week and I'm willing to bet Sonnen could've talked a lot of people keeping their tickets to the show and going through with the PPV order.

Like others have said, by Jones doing this, he's taken money out of the pockets of all the undercard guys ... guys that really do need to fight to earn a living. Sure those fights will be re-scheduled, but that doesn't help some of those guys right now if they were counting on a check in a week.

What would you blame the UFC for in this case? Is it their fault that Hendo got hurt and can't fight? Is it their fault that Jones refused to fight Sonnen? They tried to keep the card together but once Jones said No, it was a done deal.

I seriously hope that the UFC possibly helps out those guys on the undercard that needs the paycheck. It wouldn't surprise me either, because from all I've heard they generally are good with helping their guys.

It really bothers me that Dana would throw one of the fighters under the bus like that. First of all, why is Chael Sonnen worthy of fighting Jon Jones? He just had his face stomped in by Silva. Nobody wants to watch that blowhard again.

Jones shouldn't be put down for not wanting to just fight anyone 8 days before he was scheduled to fight.

Dana should have had a better backup plan. Perhaps if the card was better the Co-Main Event would have been good enough to headline the card.

But shame on Dana for throwing Jon Jones under the bus like that.

Why shouldn't he throw him under the bus? He just cost that company an upwards of 25 million dollars. By all accords, Sonnen is an equal wrestler of Hendo with inferior striking and no training camp, 2 months out of getting finished by Anderson.
Chael had the balls to say he will fight one of the P4P best fighters on 8 days notice. Jones bitched out of it, which screwed the guys that needed the fight to pay bills.

It's funny how Jones will take a short notice fight for the belt, but once he has the belt he won't fight an inferior fighter on short notice.

Yup, shame on Dana for giving Jones opportunities. For not holding his loss against him. Giving him a title shot and Shogun fighting him on short notice and injury. For giving him multiple main event spots on cards. How dare Dana get pissed when he needs a favor in return. **** that man.

Under NAC 467.259, the UFC seems to be obligated to reimburse all of those fighters under their bout agreements...
If this is true, the fighters on this card have nothing to be mad at Jones about. Not that he was responsible for their livelihood anyway.

Not really. That means they get their show money but no win bonuses and no chance at the other bonuses.

True. I get why people are going in on Jones right now, but what happened to the show must go on? It's not like the UFC hasn't given us lackluster cards recently. They still could've let these guys fight. Yeah, it's not ideal, but still.
