Dynamite's rating didn't really spike at all so I think it's pretty apparent that a lot of people that watch Dynamite don't read the dirtsheets.

I think even people who read those sites, and obsess over "insider" news, knew that we were going to get just another show. I don't think there's some untapped group of people who were going to show up and watch because of this drama. That is a niche within a niche group. They might show up if they thought it was going to be a great TV show, but not for other reasons.

WWE has grown their audience recently because word of mouth says the product has improved with Triple H in charge. Backstage drama isn't going to draw in a meaningful way. People just want a good show.

The opening segment apparently drew 1.221 million, so there was actually a lot of intrigue in how things would play out. I'm assuming because of the investigation and possible ramifications (litigation, releases or suspensions) they avoided mentioning the scrum + brawl altogether.
They closed with only 881,000 viewers and that points to Khan booking the show in reverse knowing the opening segments are the most watched. The purists & AEW diehard fans eat them up but there is no reason on Earth that Yuta vs. Garcia (two charisma vacuums) should be your closer.

He needs to do a better job of pacing, maintaining and engaging a "wider" audience for the duration of the show.

Of course, AEW hasn't tapped into anything outside of the pro wrestling bubble & casual fans probably care even less about backstage politics. The "incident" didn't make a bigger dent mostly because they don't have mainstream appeal, IMO.

I usually flip in and out of Dynamite over the course of the night. But I was damn sure there right at 8pm to see how they were gonna address it. Worth it for MJF and the first 75% of Mox. But then he reverted to his usual “Most uninteresting man in the world” and I fell asleep for the rest of the show.

I think it also indicates that - even with the heavy pushing of both - Daniel Garcia & Wheeler Yuta aren't resonating with a portion of the audience or aren't "interesting" enough to main event.

I'd say it's a little bit of both, but I'm really not high on either guy (kind of like Dominik Mysterio in WWE).

It seems like permanent 3 hour Raws started that mindset. They realized there was no way they could hold a big audience all the way til the end, so they started front loading matches, and focusing on top of the hour segments, to get the biggest numbers they could there. When Raw was two hours they were closing out the show with Cena every week.

I think people just have less and less patience to sit through commercial breaks for 2-3 hours these days.

That's an issue when your only gimmick is "I'm a great professional wrestler".

sounds like Dynamite ended up going back up to 1.01m during the main event.

maybe the kids are all right after all.

I would need to know the minute by minute breakdown. Was it 1.01 as the show went off the air, or did it hit that 5-10 minutes prior? Were people tuning in waiting to see what show was on next? Do number changes this small even mean anything?

The social media back-and-forths from anti and pro AEW people feels like so much trolling and fake opinions. You end up with people saying Garcia/Yuta are huge draws, suck it vs people saying they are ratings poison, AEW is trash. Neither are true.

I try to stay out of the cesspool that is wrestling Twitter…because it is insufferable on both sides.

Internet wrestling fans are also just generally negative. They'd almost always rather tear down the segments they dislike than talk about the ones they like, twitter is that, but amplified to 1000x, and you get throw in some weird roleplay accounts as well.

Anyway, I think it's even dumber that people would try and draw conclusions off of single segments or single ratings. There's so many factors that go into it, and establishing people in segments is still important. The weird 'dissect everything in a vacuum' and come out with takes in sports these days is just as pervasive and weird in wrestling. It's easier to find a conversation about a match rating or a program rating than it is to find a conversation about the match or the program.

I just realized this is a curmudgeonly old man rant, but I'm keeping it. Wrestling is great and fun right now at so many different levels and we should enjoy it more.
