    The career of a man named Lynn - RTTS

    My name is Lynn Nolan Ryan and I come from Refugio, Texas, just like the hall of fame pitcher, Nolan Ryan, the man that I was named after. I am a 6'2", 195 pound pitcher and have just graduated high school.

    A scout from the New York Mets organization contacted my parents and wanted to see if I would be interested in going to spring training with the club to see what I can do. Boy, do I!!

    My Debut

    WELCOME TO THE BIG LEAGUES, MR. RYAN!


    We are in Vero Beach, Florida facing the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is my first start and I am certainly nervous. I couldn't even get out of the second inning as the Dodgers pounded away. I didn't even get an out in the inning as I had given up seven runs on eight hits. Man, was I awful. I gave up a long blast by Andruw Jones and another one to Jeff Kent. The only good thing today was that I got my first strikeout of the spring by getting James Loney to go fishing after a low fastball in the first inning. I even got to get a chance to bat and somehow I made contact and grounded a single up the middle, my first hit.

    I hope that every game is not like this or else I might end up flipping burgers somewhere.

      The manager must think that I have a rubber arm or something. I'm supposed to be making my second start in a couple more days and he has asked me to come into this game, which is in extra innings and we are playing the Dodgers again, this time at home. I told him that I will do whatever it takes and will go as long as I can.

      I got into trouble in the 12th inning and had to intentionally walk a hitter to load the bases with one out. Thank god I got Andruw Jones to ground into a double play. Thank you, Carlos Beltran for making my time short as he crushed a pitch for a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning.

        The manager wanted me to make my scheduled start even though I only had a day of rest after relieving two days ago.

        Today we are facing the Cleveland Indians and the DH is in effect since we are playing at their place. Thanks to a 3-run homer by Raul Casanova we jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first two innings. Travis Hafner was hitting .417 before the game and crushed one of my hanging sliders the opposite way for a home run but it was my only run allowed for my three innings of work. Although I didn't strike out anyone, I ended up picking up my second win of the spring, first as a starter. I'm beginning to settle down a bit since my debut and did pretty well today.

          I'm now on a regular schedule and today I am making my third start of the spring. We are home to take on the Baltimore Orioles and I seemed to be dialed in for this game. I struck out three hitters and only allowed a single by Markakis in my now four innings of work as we start a new week. I caught Mora looking on a curveball and he got ticked off and started arguing with the umpire. Carlos Beltran was the star of our game as he went 1 for 2 with a 2-run home run to put us in front in the second. I got to bat again and I ended up hitting a grounder to short.

              Thanks for stopping by.

              Hopefully having a historic name might give me a boost but I expect to see many pot holes on my road to the show.

                We travelled to take on the Washington Nationals and it's my turn once again to start. I was hoping to continue my good outtings as I took my spot on the mound. The game was tight as I was able to spread out 7 hits in my 4 innings of work and I left the game with the scored tied, 1-1. Billy Wagner couldn't do much in the 9th as he allowed 2 runs by Washington as they took the game, 4-2.

                  We are home today as we take on the St.Louis Cardinals. My performance on the mound continues to improve as I went 5 innings as the pitching coach has stretched our outtings another inning as we get ready for the regular season. I was able to shut down another pretty good offense by striking out 3 hitters and allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, one was a double by Albert Pujhols. Carlos Delgado drove in the first run of the game for us as we jumped out in front 4-0 in the second.

                  I went to the plate twice, striking out and dropping a sacrifice bunt down. I am now batting .200 (1-5).

                    This is it. My last start before the Mets close up and head north for the season opener.

                    I really needed a good game today if I want to get a spot in the organization.

                    We are facing the Baltimore Orioles today, this time at their place.

                    It just wasn't my day today. I didn't really bring my "A" game with me as Markakis belted a homer off of me to drive in three runs during the second inning. I ended up allowing five runs on 8 hits and struck out 3.

                    I certainly need to continue to increase the velocity of my fastball and other pitchers and also get more movement on them.

                      The Call

                      While we were all packing up, one of the clubhouse guys told me that Mr. Randolph, our manager, wanted to see me in his office.

                      In the office was Willie Randolph, our manager, Rick Peterson, the pitching coach, and Omar Minaya, the general manager. Mr. Peterson was impressed enough by my performance that Mr. Minaya offered me a 1-year, $102,500 contract to pitch in the Mets minors. I thanked them all very much and quickly signed the contract.

                      I am to report to Mr. Mako Oliveras, the manager of the Binghamton Mets. I'm off to double-A.

                      Before I left the office, I had another meeting with pitching coach Rick Peterson. Mr. Peterson has set a couple of goals for me during the first few months of the season.

                      Code:

                      3.  Increase my bunting ability in the first 7 series

                        I stayed in Florida as the major league team left and went to the minor league camp to meet with Mako Oliveras, Binghamton's manager. After talking to him, Mr. Oliveras wanted me to have a talk with Ricky Bones, the team's pitching coach, and then with Luis Natera, the team's batting coach.

                        Mako Oliveras and Ricky Bones decided that they were going to start me off working out of the bullpen. The wanted me to get my "feet wet" and get me used to life as a minor league ballplayer before possibly increasing my role on the team.

                              I was given a chance today to show my stuff as I make my AA debut with the Binghamton Mets. We played against the Trenton Thunder and I was called upon in the top of the 6th inning with a man on first, two out and the score tied 2-2. I struck out the first hitter I saw, ending the 6th inning. That was followed by an awful 7th inning in which I allowed back-to-back big flies that put the Thunder in front 4-2. That was it for me as I went on to shut Trenton down the next two innings and we tied the score in the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately, we ended up losing in 11 inning, 5-4.
